SERVICE IS SECRET OF SUCCESS TODAY "The secret of success in present day tire merchandising is in service," declares A. S. Hogan, service manager, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of California. "Only those organizations that make a fine art of service—of making their customers satisfied customers, so that they will come back regularly for their requirements—may hope to gain more than a drift-tide share of business." "Time was when merchants who displayed more than a passing interest in customers, after making a sale, were termed commercial idealists. Today every great business enterprise worthy of the name flourishes on a foundation of service born of expert knowledge and skilled workmanship. "The idea has come to stay, that tire users may come to their dealers for advice, help and service—that a Miller's obligation to his customer only begins with the sale of a tire, and ends only when that tire has rolled its last mile. "The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of California has capitalized this idea in the establishment of service stations throughout the west, for the benefit of tire users, so little by little the motoring public has come to associate Goodyear with service." "In adopting such policy this company has steeped itself in the spirit of Charles Goodyear, a dreamer with his feet on a rock, who lived his whole life in quest of the vulcanizing secret." OLDSMOBILE CLIMBS ROUGH BANK STRAIGHT UP The cost of distribution of tires has always been a substantial part of the cost to consumers. In the early days the channels for distribution were limited. Cars were used in a great many places where tires and accessories could not be secured. The costs were necessarily high. But the new service idea has simplified all this, for as the industry developed more and more car dealers became interested in selling tires and accessories and rendering adequate service. "We have always served to ourselves the privilege of selecting our own representative service, and have been able to deal upon that we do every encouragement to the local service stations so that car owners will be within one of these tire depots." NASH BUSINESS IS GOOD SINCE SHOW Business has been good with the May Motor Co., following the automobile show. Six Nash deliveries were made during the week following the show, most of the sales being a direct result of the display of the company at the Orange-o auto show. The car which had a special Dale top and which was displayed by the May Motor Co. at the show is being driven by M. Johnson of Fullerton. The car was delivered immediately after the closing of the automotive exhibition. All the company's sales were of the Nash six. Others to whom cars were delivered were J. K. Livesey, Sr., Santa Ana, Coupe; Joe Miller, Placentia, sport model; Harrison Seaman, Fullerton, five passenger; Henry Mang, Anaheim, five passenger and Martin Landers, Montebello, five passenger. Mr. May announces that the company has just received another car load of Nash fours. CASE WAS PLEADED 2000 YEARS AGO PORTLAND, Ore., April 30. "Discharged," said Judge Rossman in the police court. "Your case was pleaded for you 2000 years ago." So Thomas Friedes, farmer, took his seven overalled youngsters in hand, left the court room and piled them into his battered and dented little milk wagon truck down in the street below. Freides was arrested at the municipal auditorium when he attempted to gain admittance for himself and children to see a motion picture depicting the life of Christ. "You can come in here," said the doorkeeper, "but them kids can't." "They'd be disappointed, mister," said Freides. "I brought them all the way to the city from our little farm near Beaverton to see this here picture." "Can't help it. We can't have any kids squallin' or annoying the audience. This is a high class production." "The Bible says," said Freides, "forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven—" "Tell it to the judge. If you won't stand aside, you're pinched," said the doorkeeper. Friedes told it to the judge. "Your case was pleaded for you 2000 years ago," said the court. "Go." 17 CARS OF FRUIT OVER P. E. Four Important Questions You Should Ask Before Selecting Your Auto Painter. 1. Whether the painter's experience is such that he can produce good prevailing color schemes, so essential in automobile painting. 2. Whether he is sincere and able through years of experience in automobile painting to give full value for money received. 3. Whether he recognizes the importance of time, and is able to fit himself to "rush" conditions and still give the proper results. 4. Whether he possesses an inborn artistic instinct which can only be developed by broad, practical experience.
