Saturday, April 23, 1921. NAME DELEGATES TO COUNTY CONVENTION GARDEN GROVE, April 22—Garden Grove W. C. T. U. met at the home of Mrs. Autchell Wednesday afternoon. The attendance was good and much interest manifested. Mrs. Amy Rolfe was the president in charge. Report of the secretary, Mrs. Amos, shamed an increase of membership since last meeting. Mrs. Estelle Harper, former president and county superintendent, was elected the local contest superintendent. Mrs. Harper has a large number of L. T. L. boys and girls organized, and a young people's branch will soon be in working order with Mrs. Dragg, a very capable leader, in charge. Mrs. Amos and Mrs. Steele were elected delegates, and Mrs. Flora Cox and Ms. Hendricas alternates to the county convention to be held in Anaheim Thursday and Friday of next week. Mrs. Nancy Watson the superintendent of Child Welfare work, also has charge of the infants' nothing box to which all contributions of clothes for babies may be sent. This is an important line of helpfulness, according to statements of local physicians, and it is hoped that the needful garments will soon be supplied for the little newcomers for whom no provision has been made. The meetings of this union are always held on the third Wednesday of each month and are always interesting and helpful. The next will be a Mothers' meeting conducted by Mrs. Nancy Watson. At the close of the session the hostess, Mrs. Mitchell, served refreshments of delicious cakes, tea and coffee. A community social was given at the school auditorium Wednesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. G. Garth of Long Beach were entertainers for the evening. Mr. Garth sang a number of darky and Scotch songs and acted out the different parts, which delighted the Lafayette Social circle held the meeting in the church parlor last Friday afternoon. Considerable work was accomplished. The next meeting will be held April 29 at the home of Mrs. Skiles. The hostesses, Mrs. Farar and Mrs. Grifford served homemade doughnuts and tea. Mr. and Mrs. Percy Bradford motorized to Long Beach Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Wm. Vagele entertained the missionary society Monday afternoon. The church of the Nazarene is holding special revival meetings this week and next. The Wilde-Knight string quartet are here giving freely of their wonderful talent. Prof. and Mrs. Riddlebarger are moved into the newly made modern home on the school grounds. Arnold Kraemer is rebuilding the house formerly occupied by the Riddlebargers and adding another story. When this is finished he and his bride will move into it. The Pleasantia club was en-tertained-last Thursday at the home of Mrs. Herbert Sullivan. The time was spent at "500," the first prize going to Mrs. Frank Miller and consolation to Mrs. Harry Scars of Anaheim Dalaty refreshments were served by the hostess to Mrs. J. E. Scott, Mrs. Percy Bradford, Mrs. James Tuffree, Mrs. Geo. Dunsmoor, Mrs. Frank Miller, Mrs. Jack Sollis, Mrs. Harry Scars, Mrs. Ray Hale, Mrs. L. S. Chapman, Mrs T. L. McFadden, Mrs. Geo. Meyers and Miss Nina McLeellan. Mr. Edward Hammill spent Thursday as guest of Mrs. Pelitz. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whitney and Mrs. Harry Hatch of Long Beach motored here Wednesday and were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Edwardson. Miss Barbara Greenwood, head of the kindergarten department of the So. Branch of the Univ., of Calif., was the speaker at 40 Better Mothers Club Tuesday afternoon. Her intensely instructive, and interlining talk was heard by nearly 40 mothers. The Misses Frances Schallies and Thelma Green delighted their audience with a beautiful piano duet. Delicious refreshments of home-made ice cream and cake were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Hill and Mrs.Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. G. Garth of Long Beach were entertainers for the evening. Mr. Garth sang a number of darky and booth songs and acted out the different parts which delighted the audience. He also played a number of selections on the piano. Mrs. Garth entertained with several readings which were very amusing and appreciated by those present. The audience led by Mr. Garth, sang a few songs. The girls' Sunday school classes of the Methodist church taught by Mrs. Schnitger and Mrs. Andreas entertained the boys' classes and their teachers, Wayne Holt and Mr. Davidson, by giving them a supper last Friday evening. The boys and girls had a contest for the best membership and the boys won the feed, which was very much enjoyed. The rest of the evening was enjoyed by music and out-door games. An Alaskan movie lecture was given at the Garden Grove theatre Wednesday evening by W. B. Van Valin, leader of the Wanamaker expedition, which was intensely interesting and also educational. Mr. and Mrs. Rert Desck and family who recently moved from here, are now located in their new home on the Farnaworth ranch above El Modena. Mr. and Mrs. Barnett and daughter have returned to Garden Grove and are living on a ranch near town. The Barnett family have been living in Santa Ana for he past year. Frank Hiselt made a business trip to Los Angeles Thursday. Robert Valley has been out of school this week and is suffering with a severe cold. Placentia News PLACENTIA, April 23.—(Special)—At the H. C. L. meeting Tuesday evening Mrs. Farley of Fullerton, accompanied by Miss Shepardson, sang a wonderful opera in Italian, with a beautiful encore in English. Miss Shepardson, at the request of Mrs. Farley, gave a witty synopsis of the Italian opera as there were probably one or two in the audience who might not understand Italian. The speaker of the day, Charles Ballington Booth, was introduced. His topic was Prison Reform, and Mr. Booth was master of his topic. None who heard his stirring address can ever forget the great truths uttered. To those who missed this opportunity, I can only say that they have lost a golden opportunity and that mere words fall in description even repeating what he so earnestly told him enthusiastic audience. The Misses Frances Schallies and Thelma Green delighted their audience with a beautiful piano duet. Mr. and Mrs. Peey Bradfeod motor, e do Palm Springs Sunday. Mrs. J. E. Scott and Mrs. Sophie Scott spent Friday in Los Angeles. Miss Annie Johnson has bought a new Nash car. OPPOSE STAGE LINE PERMIT Opposed by the Crown Stage line, by the Southern Pacific and the San-To Fe, a hearing on an application to the state railroad commission by J. D. Godfrey of Huntington Beach to establish a freight, baggage and express service between Santa Ana, Tuatin, Irvine, Laguna Beach and Arch Beach, was held yesterday in Santa Ana before Examiner Myron Westover, of San Francisco, representing the commission. Several business men from Laguna Beach spoke in favor of the establishment of the service Godfrey proposes. A hearing on another application, filed by S. B. Cowan, of Los Angeles, who seeks a permit to operate an auto-flight and truck service between Los Angeles, Huntington Park, Northam, Olinda, Olive, Cypress, El Modeng Harper, Balboa and Newport Beach, was held in the afternoon. BEBE PREPARES TO LEAVE Nothing particularly new on Bebe Daniels today. The motion picture star is prepared to leave her cell at the county jail sometime during the forenoon of Sunday. A Los Angeles man has written to the board of supervisors to the effect that "Justice Cox and Miss Daniels have put Santa Ana on the map." He falls to see why Orange county officials should be criticised in any way in connection with the treatment of the star during her incarceration in the county jail. Arry a Plain Dealer Want Ad. None who heard his stirring address can ever forget the great truths uttered. To those who missed this opportunity, I can only say that they have lost a golden opportunity and that mere words fall in description even repeating what he so earnestly told him enthusiastic audience. The main idea he tried to impart was that under the present system of things as they are we sentence prisoners to our jails and state penitentiaries for "getting something for nothing" and then teach him to do that very thing as long as he is a prisoner. Make your prisoners pay the price, not the visitation of their actions. At the close of his inspiring words a collection was taken to further a little the work of the Volunteers of America of which association Mr. Booth is a worker. The program of the day closed with a violin and piano duet by Miss Evans and Miss Badgley of Fullerton. These delightful musicians gracefully responded to an enthusiastic core. Tea and home-made cake were served by the hostesses, Mrs. Percy Bradford, Mrs. Arthur Mann and Mrs. S. L. Moore. A wonderful collection of tapestry paintings were on exhibition at the Round Table lub house Wednesday afternoon. The artist is Mrs. Sharon of Globe, Ariz. She was represented by Mrs. Casey.
