BEGIN WORK UPON WALNUT ASS'N. BLDG.
With California's production of walnuts doubling every four years and the percentage of the crop handled by the associated growers increasing steadily, the California Walnut Growers' Assn. is establishing a precedent as a cooperative marketing organization, by building and owning its own home.
Ground was broken a few days ago for a $300,000 office building and byproducts factory at Seventh and Mill Streets, Los Angeles, which will be occupied by the California Walnut Growers' association not later than Sept. 1. So far as is known no other cooperative marketing organization in California owns its own headquarters.
The new home of the California walnut, in which approximately 3500 growers will be stockholders, will occupy a space of 100 feet on East Seventh street and 150 feet on Mill Street. There will be a Santa Fe spur track at the rear for convenient handling of the product.
According to the architect's plans, the front of the building, on Seventh street, will be seven stories high, with a basement beneath. The back half of the building will be three stories high. It will be a Class-A, reinforced concrete structure, fireproof throughout.
At the present plant, in the Los Angeles Union Terminal, it is necessary to handle culls from 5 to 8 times before they are finally reduced to their ultimate byproducts. In the new plant the nuts will be elevated to the seventh floor when they arrive and from where they will travel by gravity down to the cracking room, and to the sorting room on the third floor. They will then gravitate down to the salvage machines and packers on the second floor and finally go to the basement for storage until shipped. Considerable new and improved machinery for swift handling of products and reduction of overhead costs will be installed as soon as the new structure is ready for occupancy.
In commenting upon the necessity for such a building, C. Thorpe,
