ARTIST AUTOS THRU PAINTED DESERT Looping the Painted Desert in answer to the "Call of the Open Road," is the annual pastime of C. M. Payne, artist-author of "Smatter Pop." According to Mr. Payne a trip thrue the great "Color Country of the Navahues" is one of the most fascinating motors tours in the southwest... This is the way "Smatter Pop" describes it. "Paintd desert? Yes, we have been there—not once, but three times. It's a wierd country. A region full of thrills. No place for a tenderfoot with an uncertain motor car, but a great place for the man who wants something different. If you have confidence in your car and its stability to go the pace and bring you out to civilization again its all right. We come thru all three trips without a scratch, and found them all so interesting we hope to go again this year. "The best time of year? Well, that is a question indeed. Probably May is as good as September, but during July and August that northern Arizona region is subject to torrential downpours which occasionally create serious trouble. We got caught once in a 'dry' wash. We heard a rush and roar behind us—the storm itself was 20 miles away—we could see it in the distance. Before we could get out of the wash the water was up to our floor boards and I thought it was the last of us. That was where our motor car played the part of the hero in real earnest. We had a four passenger speedster and the way that Super-Six wallowed to shore convinced us a dependable car was worth while on such a long distance trip. "To see the Painted Desert, follow the National Old Trail to Williams, there taking the road to Grand Canyon half a day's drive. After doing' the canyon go around on-the-flagstaff route to the Yuba City..." fore we could get out of the wash the water was up to our floor boards and I thought it was the last of us. After 'doing' the canyon go around on the Flagstaff route to the Yuba City road and cross the Little Colorado. Right there you enter the Painted Desert, the most wonderfully colored country of the southwest. At Yuba City the real trip commences. To the northwest the cliff dwellings of a prehistoric race, Monument valley of the San Juan, where the Mitteens of Mephistophelus tower a thousand feet sheer above the plateau. Thru Marsh pass and southward in a great loop we pass Chin Lee and enter Canyon Do Chelly pronounced De Shayah) whose blood red walls rise sheer to awesome heights which dwarfs mere men to insignificance. The De Chelly cliff dwellings in themselves are worth the entire trip. They are an education in prehistoric lore of America, and the canyon is one of the most tremendous in precipitous cliffs we have ever seen. "If one goes in August as we did three years ago with our Hudson Sedan, they can see the famous snake dance at Oraibi, that curious Indian Pueblo, where the wierd 'Pray-for-rain' ceremony is usually held between August 22nd and September 1. Our sedan was the first enclosed car in that region and the Indians called it the "Wheel House." The next year we went in our Hudson speedster, but the Indians remembered us as the-white-people-who-rode-in-a-house. "Take it all together there is no trip which has a wider range of educational value and healthfulness than the loop thru the Painted Desert. It has a fascination which once enjoyed, grips the memory with such vivid colorure that the pleasure remains for all times." THE NIGHT BEFORE PAY DAY "Twas the night before pay day, and all thru my jeans. I hunted in vain for the price of some beans; Not a quarter was stirring, not even a jit; The kale was off duty, drilled edges had quit. Forward, turn, forward, O Time, in thy flight— Make it tomorrow just for tonight. — Fidelity Spirit. Up-to-the-Minu Being a W. H. In this examination, the applicant is required to drive a machine up the mountain side, kill his engine and start again, besides some other little stunts which tend to prove that he is capable of handling a car under all conditions. Upon his return home, Mr. Hale declares that it is his intention to start a campaign in the newspapers and among his personal friends for the up-building of the Auto club in Des Moines, using the So. Calif. club as an example. Speedway on Sunday, April 19th, is the consensus of opinion among the racing fans who follow the game closely. DePalma's victory in February was so decisive that he gained many new followers in addition to the huge army of admirers which always cheer his colors. But many things have happened since February. Frederick Deusenberg has succeeded in getting many miles an hour more speed out of his four cars than he could coax out of the cylinders a month ago. Tommy Milton has injected new life into the car with which he took second to DePalma in the last races. And Ducsenberg has drafted two new drivers to handle his speed creations. One of the two is Eddie Pullen, considered the greatest short distance driver in the country. The other, Joe Thomas, is also a different type than was ever on the famous "Densle" team. Although much trouble developed in the selection of a referee for the events, Barney Oldfield withdrawing a few days ago, declaring that there was so much rough driving in the last race and that indications were favorable for a repetition of the same tactics in the coming race that he did not care to officiate. After a three day search for a man capable of ruling the drivers with an iron hand, Captain Eddie Ricker backer, American ace, was selected "Rick" knows all the tricks of the game and will handle, without gloves, any of the pilots who show disrespect for the track rules: — Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. — To Plain Dealer Want Ads. L. McCausland. Touring and roadster Briscoe models will be exhibited at the Auto Show. Both of these types are new. The touring car is a five passenger model, which follows closely the well-defined Briscoe ideas in body and enassig design. The roadster model incorporates some novel features. It has a two-passenger body with a rear luggage compartment of ample proportions, completely enclosed. Access to the luggage compartment is gained through a door on the right side of the car, which when open shows ample space for salesman's samples, or for a complete touring outfit. The luggage chamber is entirely weather-proof and is as easily reached as the passenger seats themselves. It is safe to say that the car will be very popular with salesmen and professional men. The touring car called the "Briscoe Model." is a handsomely appointed car, completely equipped with wire wheels, genuine Spanish leather upholstering, bumpers front and rear, pantasole top, and many other features. A Briscoe model not on display at the show is the Rapid Delivery, a specially designed wagon for all the various light delivery uses where speed and stamina are factors.
