Saturday, April 9, 1921 RIDES MOTORCYCLE IN GRAND CANYON PEACH SPRINGS, Ariz.—The Grand Canyon of the Colorado, Titan of Chasms, has been conquered by a motorcycle. For the first time in history a motor-driven vehicle has gone down the almost perpendicular mile-high palisades and climbed out again under its own power. This feat was accomplished recently by John Edwin Hogg, of Los Angeles, Calif., on a Goodyear-equipped Harley Davidson Sport model after four days of hair-raising riding during which not a moment's trouble was experienced with either motor or tires. The gas bike made the 100 mile trip from Los Angeles here return, including the trip down anyon, on the original air. No tire chains were used on the sensational ride into the chasm. Hogg was out and bruised from the innumerable spills caused by riding over nine miles of boulders and thru streams where the path was hidden. His body was filled with cactus thorns from being hurled from his machine into the clumps of cactus bushes. He was forced to rest for several days at the completion of the sensational feat. Portified with but two new Good-year All-weather tread tires, Hogg left Los Angeles with a companion for the 790 mile trip over half a dozen mountain ranges and the Molave desert to Peach Springs, which has an elevation of 4900 feet. On his arrival he engaged a Hualapai Indian guide with two pack horses and started down the 18 precipitous, trackless miles from which Peach Springs canyon tunnels to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, where the turbulent Colorado rivers roars between mile-high walls. All day long Hogg bounced over boulders, torre thru cactus and ploughed thru deep sand in low gear, both man and machine taking terrific punishment. He then camped to await the arrival of his two companions with the pack horses. By noon Hogg had somersaulted over a 15 foot ledge of boulders and was two miles from the bottom of the canyon, with the worst to come. The horses could be taken no farther. PAIGE AUTO RUNS TO BALDY IN HIGH Camp Baldy on high gear! If you have ever visited that famous resort under the shadow of its snow-over-ed peak you will be most willing to swear that it can't be done. A 3500-foot climb in a distance of 18½ miles is quite a feat in itself over any road in high gear, but it happened last week when a Paige 6-86 touring car was driven from Pomona to the camp, all the way in "high" with the road in the poorest shape it has been in for months. Wallace Chorn of the A.-E. Evans Co., So. Calif. distributors for the Paige, held a conference with his Pomona dealer, Elmer Booth, who, by the way, is a brother of George Booth, of Booth & Henzie, distributors here for the Paige. The Camp Baldy trip was decided upon as the ideal place for a real workout of the car. The only question was "would it be able to climb that terrific grade in high gear?" With Booth at the wheel and Smith Russell, A Pomona newspaper man as observer, in the car, the trip was made. From Pomona to Churemont the grade is not so noticeable, although it averages about 100 feet to the mile. Turning into Mountain ave. from Churemont, however, the grade mounts rapidly upward. There, with a paved boulevard to roll over, The only place to ride in Diamond canyon was the bed of a creek running between walls from 400 to 6,000 feet high and so narrow that Hogg could almost touch them with outstretched arms. Here it was dark as night, so the intrepid rider had to use lights to see his path in the three-foot deep stream. The final test came when with a perpendicular wall on one side and sand dunes 200 feet high on the other, the way looked impassable. Hogg first prospected on foot, then shot the motorcycle up the dunes on one side, plunged over the top and somersaulted over the handlebars, with the machine following. Dizzy and bewildered, he arose from the ground and shook the sand from his cars—he was at the bottom of Grand Canyon. The ride up the perpendicular mile high walls was as difficult as the ride All day long Hogg bounced over boulders, torc thru cactus and ploughed thru deep sand in low gear, both man and machine taking terrific punishment. He then camped to await the arrival of his two companions with the pack horses. By noon Hogg had somersaulted over a 15 foot ledge of boulders and was two miles from the bottom of the canyon, with the worst to come. The horses could be taken no farther because of a 49 foot perpendicular drop—but the daring rider drove off the ledge and tumbled to the bottom, without serious injury. Next day the dry washes gave way to precipitous walls of rock that dropped in grade several hundred feet to the mile. The way was obstructed by boulders from the size of a man's head to that of a load of hay. Hogg slammed the machine over the boulders, trusting to luck to land on two wheels, sending out streaks of fire as footboards and motor cascraped over the rocks. The rider lost all track of how many times he was thrown to the ground. His knees and elbows were bruised and blackened—his legs and arms full of cactus thorns. The final test came when with a perpendicular wall on one side and sand dune 200 feet high, on the other, the way looked impossible. Hogg first prospected on foot, then shot the motorcycle up the dunes on one side, plunged over the top and somersaulted over the handlebars, with the machine following. Dizzy and bewildered, he arrose from the ground and shook the sand from his cars—he was at the bottom of Grand Canyon. The ride up the perpendicular mile high walls was as difficult as the ride down. The machine had power to go up every incline and the tires gave the necessary traction—the difficulty was for the rider to stay on the machine. In two days Hogg worked his way back to the rim of the canyon and went to bed to recuperate. His companions trailed in later—tired and footsore—just from walkings. Summing up his trip, Hogg said, "I believe the trip in and out of the canyon is the severest to which a motorcycle has ever been subjected. The trip was made on two and a half gallons of gasoline and two quarts of oil. The times were but little worse for wear after the terrife punishment of 10,000 feet ascent and descent in 46 miles of travel." 1916 51,647 1917 103,269 1918 120,322 1919 111,339 1920 18 Chevrolet Sales Record THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA. There is a good, stiff climb from the park to the Toll Gate, near the entrance to Stoddard Canyon, but it is beyond the Toll Gate where the real test for a car begins. Winding in and out thru the canyons, almost always upward, the road runs along San Antonio Creek. Every hundred yards or so there is a terrific bump, causing the wheels to spin in the air, and the motor slows down slightly like a lion crouching for a spring. One more on solid ground the car again picks up speed, only to be slowed down again when the drainage ridge, piled up to keep the road clear of melting snow water, makes the traction poor. You pass the power house and then comes the hard climb to the "Hog Back," a grade of about 14 pct. The road is not quite so steep for a short distance and then comes the hardest pull of all—the Kerckhoff Grade, where the slope is said to be almost. If not quite 20 pct. From then on the way is comparatively easy into Camp Baldy, past the entrance to Cow Canyon, and then the short and fairly sharp grade up into the camp. It was a terrific test, but the Paige never faltered. The big motor kept plugging along, even tho slightly slowed down by the long hard pull on the Hogback, or the Kerckhoff, but it topped each rise without missing a single stroke. The Paige which made the trip up the Camp Baldy road was a strictly stock touring car and no special preparation was made for the difficult test climb. Sanitary supply with the state that of the state boardselves—no sales talk is needed. All that is necessary to make a sale is to show customers how the contents are used. This idea is the result of his recent experience that has amusing angles. Recently a motorist came in the store with a tube that needed repairing. Immediately Chrystal saw and seized the opportunity to make an additional sale of a kit, so keeping the customer interested with a running fire of conversation, he gave a demonstration of how repairs can be made by use of its contents. The salesman finally concluded his sales talk, confident that he had given a clear-cut explanation—that would bring a sale. Imagine his surprise when the customer brought paper and a penet from an inside pocket and wrote, "If am a deaf mute and couldn't hear what you've been saying, but I understood the demonstration and will buy a kit." As the deaf mute went out with the purchase in his pocket, he smiled in sympathy with Chrystal's astonishment.
