PRESENTING THE TAX BILL
(Oakland Tribune.)
Following with a certainty of which the Tribune had forewarned, an increase in the rates for gas for household purposes in northern California cities has been the first result of the passage of the higher taxation measure by the state legislature. This increase is authorized in an order handed down yesterday by the California railway commission and in agreement with the petition of the Pacific Gas and Electric company.
It is expected that the gas rate raise will be immediately succeeded by authorization for a raise in charges for electric current furnished by this corporation, and by increased charges for the gas and electric service of other companies throughout California. If not increases there will be retention of all or a substantial part of the temporary increase allowed during the war to meet the extraordinary situation then existing.
The gas rate increases constitute the first raise in charges for public utility service granted by the state railroad commission since the enactment of the administration's higher taxation law. Not all the increase is claimed to be due to the increase in corporation taxes—there are alleged increases in the cost of operation—but a very large portion of the higher operation and maintenance cost claimed to be faced by the gas company is credited to the King bill; about $220,000, to be specific.
What is important to emphasize now is that the increase in taxation which the state politicians claimed to have levied on the corporations has been immediately, before collection, passed on to the people, with other increases, not so clearly explained, added.
For the residents of Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley, Albany, Piedmont, Emeryville, San Francisco and contiguous territory the increase in rates is 8 cents—from $1.05 to $1.15 per 1000 cubic feet. Rates for other communities vary but are higher. It will be a very simple matter for the common folk who use gas in their homes to calculate their share of the new tax burden. They have only to add up the increases in their monthly gas bills for a year to find out the annual contribution to state government extravagance. Before long they will also know what additional items in the cost of living are to be charged to increased rates for electric current, express companies, transportation lines, etc.
Ample warning was given of the results of the higher taxation project of the state administration. But the members of the legislature were more attentive to the pleadings and coercive tactics of the job dispensers at Sacramento than they were to the public interest. Hence they authorized the addition, an $18,000,000 item to the tax burden and on April 12 the gas users will begin to pay the bill.
This is perhaps for the best. It may lead the people to a determination to hold their legislative representatives to a strict accountability and to rebuke officials who break pledges of economy made when they seek votes.

NOVEL INVENTION
Charles W. Nash, head of the Nahh interests of Kenosha, Wis., and originator of the "straight line," production system for motor cars, has announced a new reduction method. Applied to a different class of cars this method duplicates by machinery and at a lower cost the fine handwork that has always distinguished European cars. It might be called the "multi-machine" method.
The new scheme is being utilized by the Lafayette Motors Co., of Indiana, of which Mr. Nash is president.
"After more than 20 years in the motor car business," says Mr. Nash, "I have realized an ambition to produce a car comparable to the finest hand-made cars of Europe, but designed for American road conditions.
While this multiplicity of operations adds to manufacturing cost it does not approach the cost of hand-work, because of the increased speed with which machine work is accomplished. Besides it reduces to the lowest possible degree the 'human element' which is the greatest factor of error in any fabricated product, and it retains that important asset of the American method, the perfect interchangability of parts."

shop in the rear of my home, 602 W. Center-st. I operated and advertised same until for violating the garage zone ordinance. WHY? Because the council had repealed the new one whereby the residence district was divided into three sections. Now, if itts, such a case occurring a short time ago, they need change only one section of the council? But why was I allowed to operate for almost three months before being dissided did the city issue a license to a man outside the zone and then close him up the filling station in my front yard. I could even have a blacksmith shop but still, for some back yard.

MR. TAXPAYER.
you paid $533.34 to have your grammar school bus repaired? In that bill, you paid $5 per hour. One man would have to work 174 hours. At nine hours per day, it would and do you know that you have paid considerably more for rgpairs on this same bus
