HOUSING SHORTAGE NOT RELIEVED YET
The shortage in housing, the country over, persists. There has been a measure of relief, here and there, but not even approximately as much as is required to meet the normal demand for housing. Families by the hundreds of thousands are inadequately housed. Many must live in unsanitary quarters, so overcrowded to be devoid of comfort. Many are victims of extortionate rents.
A great deal of social unrest prevailing is attributed, in large measure, to these distressful housing conditions and attendant high rents. Hence each and every new house erected not only helps to provide healthful, comfortable housing for families in need of shelter, but helps, as well, to solve the disquieting problem of social discontent.
In every locality there should be systematic, persistent effort to promote new building. Public spirit, as well as business-opportunity instincts, should be appealed to, in endeavors to induce persons of means to invest in building construction. Persons of this type should be impressed that, by putting their money into enterprises of this nature, they not only will stand to make a fair profit on their investment, in the long run, but will be doing a distinctly helpful public service, as well.
UNION MAKES GOOD RECORD ON STEARNS
At Brea, the Union has the largest well in So. Calif. Stearns 59, in Brea canyon has startled oldom. Drilled to 2676 feet, the well did not make much of a showing until the oil sands were reached and very little of the sand was drilled into before it was seen that a big well was in sight. The first day's production registered 1200 barrels, the second showed an increase of 600 barrels, and today the well climbed to 2000 barrels, making it the biggest producer in the southern field. At Stearns 59, the Union has a shale at 1575, and No. 33 is making done at 1700 feet.
The Columbia Oil Co.'s Menchego No. 1 still continues to make holes in a fine oil sand that shows some oil, but is not as rich as might be expected at this depth. Menchego No. 2 is drilling at 2150 in sandy shale and is showing oil and gas. On the Pico property No. 2 is 3100 in the shale and No. 3 in the same formation at 2500 feet.
Development work on the Fullerton Oil Co.'s Brea holdings is going steadily ahead with three wells drilling. No. 6 is drilling in the sand and shale at 3225. No. 14 is in the conglomerate at 1375, and No. 1 is set a string of 10-inch pipe at 3100 feet.
On the Tonner property in the Brea Canyon district the General Petroleum Co. spudded in and started drilling on Tonner No. 11 and 12 two new wells. No. 5 is redrilling at 3275, and No. 6 is making hole at 3300 in shale.
The Petroleum Development Co.'s deep test well No. 88 is now drilling at 4000 feet. At this depth the formation is a hard sand with little or no indications of oil. It is the intention to carry the hole on deeper and thoroughly test out the possible benefits of the existence of a deep oil sand in the old Olinda field.
The West Coast Oil Co.'s quit drilling on No. 77 at 3100 feet and put the new well on the beam. While the production has not settled yet the well looks good for 300 barrels. No. 49 in in the oil sand at 2800 and is looking good. No. 83 is rigging up. No. 89 is held up with a fishing job at 1900 feet.
Olive News
OLIVE, March 16—A broad smile adorns the faces of the farmers because of a fine rain lasting from Saturday morning till Monday morning. The roads ran rivers and the ground is well soaked.

At Brea, the Union has the largest well in So. Calif. Stearns 58. In Brea canyon has started oldom. At Stearns 59 the Union has a 1100-barrel well. No. 63 is making 250 barrels, and Nos. 61 and 64 are good for 100 each. In a few months the Union has developed 3600 barrels daily on the Stearns property, making a record for developing production on new property. A year ago this section of the Brea field was considered drilled up. Up along the hill sides are seen a number of the little old derricks that drilled the shallow producers of 20 years ago. Beside them now stand the big towering rigs marking the location of some of the biggest wells in California.
Brea Canyon Oil Co.'s No. 32, a deep test well now drilling at 3946, is in a sandy shale carrying considerable gas. While the well is not showing a great amount of oil, the increased quantity of gas may mean a deep sand is about to be tapped. The drilling is going along nicely and the hole is in excellent condition. No. 2-A is drilling in the sandy

News of Oil Fields
(Huntington Beach Field)
Western Union Oil Co.—Well No. 1, on the Ashton tract, No. 75, is drilling in shale at 2950. There have been various reports about the showings in this well, but so far they have not developed into anything worth setting casing for, but this will likely be done before next report.
Mid-Central Oil Co.—The drilling of the cement in the well on the McFarland lease, Bolas Chica mesa, closed Wednesday, and if the water has been shut off the well will be drilled in with cable tools, with which the cement was drilled. There was 441 feet of cement in the pipe, which made the drilling more than ordinary one. This well was cemented at 4143 feet.
Iowa California Oil Co. — Some progress has been made on the rig on Main street, at Edware-ave.
Eden's Syndicate — Considerable progress has been made on the rig on Main-st, near Thirteenth-st, during the past week. The work of setting boilers is almost completed.
Texas Holding Co. — The long silence around the derrick on the Houston-Abarr-Seely lease, northeast of Reservoir Hill, has been broken, and the familiar grind of the rotary drill will soon be heard, as Wigle & McBride, drilling contractors, moved their equipment from the Hurst well and as soon as it can be installed the hole will be spudded in.
Texcal Oil & Refining Co.—Well on No. 1 the Burks lease, north of Reservoir Hill, is drilling in shale at 2425 feet, with some very good showings of oil and gas. Casing will probably be set some time next week.
The work of rigging up well No. 2, on the Hugh Grant lease, a short distance southeast, will be completed in a few days and the well drilled with rotary tools. This hole was spudded in a few days ago with cable tools to comply with the terms of the lease.
Argonaut Oil Co.—The well on Stephen Turley lease, north of Reservoir Hill, is about 1400 feet deep.
There has been very rapid progress at this well since last report, about 800 feet of hole having been stands cemented, but this will no doubt be drilled out before next report.
Well No. 1, Huntington Beach Co. lease, north of Reservoir Hill, will be spudded in in a few days, the work of skidding the derrick having been completed. The rotary equipment was moved from this well to a well the company is drilling in the Salt Lake field, Tuesday and Wednesday, and the redrilling of this well will be by contract.
Well No. 2 on the southwest brow of the hill is cemented at 2323 feet. Both of these wells will probably be drilled in with cable tools.
Republic Petroleum Corp.—The work of drilling in the well on the Kirk lease, southwest of the Holly sugar factory, with cable tools, has been abandoned, and rotary tools are being installed. This change was decided upon on account of the great gas pressure encountered.
Milley-Keck Oil Co.—Well No. 2, a short distance south of No. 1, is being rigged, and its hole will be spudded in soon.
Coalinga-Mohawk Is Still In Sand at 3500
Newport Field
The oil sand struck by the Coalinga-Mohawk at 3500 feet still continues at 3700, the present depth. The sand is not showing any more signs of oil and is perfectly dry.
The water that has played so disasterously with the Syndicate has been ferreted out. With the knowledge of the ingress of the water it is that it can be readily shut off and the well given a chance at production.
The Interstate Oil Co.'s No. 1 Mesa is drilling at 3225. At this depth the formation is blue shale with an occasional showing. Newport Heights No. 1 and Irvine No. 1 are both standing cemented.
The Long Beach Con. Oil Co. is getting ready to start drilling on No. 2, the intention to carry the well into the tar sand at about 345 feet and produce that depth. A 12-inch hole will be sunk into the tar sand. It is the plan to heat the tar sands so as the product can be pumper. As there seems to be an unlimited amount of the asphaltum, present ide of producing it commercially this month.

Argonaut Oil Co.—The well on the Stephen Turley lease, north of Reservoir Hill, is about 1400 feet deep.
There has been very rapid progress at this well since last report, about 800 feet of hole having been made past week. If this relative progress continues this well will be cemented in about three weeks.
Sun Oil Co.—There is but little new to say about the rig on block 1101, west side of Alabama avenue, between Knoxville and Lincoln-sta. This company has nine leases in various parts of the field, which insures production.
Bolsa Chica Oil Co.—The derrick for the rig which is being built on two lots at Wesley and Ninetennth, has been completed. This is the second well in the field to be drilled on but two city lots. If such misfortune should happen to this company as has already fallen to the lot of three other companies—lose the hole—the site will be lost, as there is no room to shift the derricks, as was done at the other locations.
Peerless Petroleum Co.—There has been but little new transpired at the rig on the Griffith-Thompson lease, at Ufla, near Bampshire, since last report.
The Petroleum Co. — Little hole has been made since last report at the well on the C. J. Porter community lease, at Main and Clay streets, as they have been hung up with a fishing job for several days.
Pantages Huntington Oil Co.—The well on the west side of Main street, north of Twelfth, will very likely be spudded in before next report, as the work of rigging up is well along.
Motor Oil & Refining Co.—There is nothing new to report about the rig at Geneva and Alabama, although it is said that other parties will soon tak over the holdings and go forward with the work, and also tear down the high board fence which surround most of the lease.
National Exploration Co.—The work of rigging up at the well on the Newland-Borchard lease, east of the city limits on the Sam Glaser road, is rapidly being completed, and the drill will likely be going soon.
Petroleum Midway Co., Ltd.—The well on the Ray Walker community, at Park and Springfield streets, stands cemented.
Well No. 1, Vollmer-Myers lease, Traget No. $1 and $2, northwest of Reservoir Hill, is drilling in shade at about 2400 feet.
Well No. 1, Hottel tract, Columbia lease No. 3, east of Reservoir Hill, is being prepared for a pumping test at 2845 feet. Only 10 feet had been drilled into the oil sands, but it was deemed advisable to put in the pump for a water test.
