The patronage of the local library is steadily increasing as is shown by the report for February which shows that 570 people used the reading room during the month. One hundred and twenty-five new books were prepared for circulation, 29 new card holders were registered, and 693 books were borrowed. Another consignment of books will be received shortly and among these are several books on electricity and wireless telegraphy and telephony.
The adult Bible class of the Presbyterian church gave Mr. O. W. Lillie a surprise party on his birthday on Wednesday of last week. Members of the class gather dat the church and went in a body to the Lillie home on Placentia-ave, where a most delightful evening was enjoyed. Much meriment was caused by the editing by those present of a newspaper with all departments from society events to the lots and found column. Mr. Lillie was for years the teacher of this class and he is now the assistant teacher and much beloved by all. As a token of their regard for him, Mr. Lillie was presented with a pair of gold cuff links. A most delightful evening of good fun and good fellowship was closed by the serving of refreshments, the piece de resistance being a brightly lighted birthday cake.

CYPRESS, March 12—Twenty-one years ago at Centralla school I met for the first time a little girl whose industry and application to her studies, her charm of manner and disposition won for her admiration and esteem of all those that knew her. Leaulia did not belong to any of our school clicks. She did not get involved in our petty quarrels. Some how she never became identified with any movement that might cause her to lose the goodwill of any one. We all looked up to Leau as a sort of ideal.
