UNION TO DEVELOP BREA CANYON FIELD The Union Oil Co. has plans under way for extensive development work in the Brea Canyon field. Starting on some of this new work locations have been made for Stearna No. 66 and 67. No. 75 is grading for a rig, also No. 81. A new rig marks the location for Nos. 82, 56 and 57. At No. 58 close to 3,000 feet of hole has been made and a very good showing of oil is reported. No. 64 is in the brown shale at 2200 feet and is showing considerable oil. The Brea Canyon Oil Co.'s deep test well No. 32, down to 2835 feet has shown enough oil to warrant the prediction of a 100 barrel well being brought in. Drilling is now going ahead inside of 3-inch casing for the purpose of doing a little more deep exploring before bringing the well in. No. 2-A redrilling at 1300 is in sandy shale. No. 33 shows 1,400 feet of hole in the shale, and preparations are about completed for the spudding in on No. 34, a new well. Development work by the Columbia Oil Producing Co. is being pushed steadily forward. The company's report for the week has six wells drilling. Orange No. 7 is now drilling in new hole at 3200 feet. Pico No. 2 at 3050 feet is in shale, and Pico No. 3 is close to 2000 feet in the same formation. Pico 4 stands cemented at 600. Drilling at Menchego No. 1 still continues in a fine white sand at 3175. The sand is showing some oil. Menchego No. 2 is down to 3125 in sandy shale. The Fullerton Oil Co. will maintain three strings of drilling tools in the Brea field. No. 16 the deepest well of the trio is making hole in black shale at 3050. No. 14 is going nicely in the sandy shale at 875. No. 6 is getting down, the log shows 3000 feet in hard sandy shale. The first conglomerate formation struck in the Tonner field since drilling started a year ago has been unearthed at Tonner No. 13 at 1150. The drill is still in the hard formation and has slowed up the speed of be considered a pure wild cat proposition. Should the National find oil in paying quantity in Chino Canyon it will have the honor of adding a new field to California. By many the Chino well is considered a very good chance. Drilling at Olinda No. 1 is now at 1400 and going nicely. If the amount of oil sand drilled thru means anything to a producing well the West Coast Oil Co. will certainly bring in a nice well at No. 77. The oil sand struck at 2700 feet still continues to the present depth of 3075. No. 49 at 2680 seems to have passed thru the oil sand struck at 2500 and will be brought in soon unless a deeper sand is encountered. No. 83 is rigging up and will start drilling in a few days. The Union Oil Co., drilling two new wells on the old Graham-Lotus property is meeting with success. No. 51, now drilling at 3100 feet in the oil sand and looking good. At No. 53 a successful shut off on water was secured at 2765 and things are in readiness to resume drilling. On the Naranjal property the Union has one well drilling No. 10. At 2750 the Naranjal well is in the oil sand and looking promising. It seems that the Leheigh well on the old New England property is not producing according to expectations nor according to its original production and is being bailed and cleaned out. It will probably do 60. PLEASANT SURPRISE UPON ANNIVERSARY DUENA PARK, Mar. 2—Special—Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Thurman were very pleasantly surprised on Saturday evening, when a number of their neighbors and friends came in, it was their 37th wedding anniversary. The evening was spent in merry-making, every one joining in the fun. At a late hour delicious refreshments: sandwiches, home-made cakes and coffee were served by the ladies. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Horn, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hartman, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bastandy, Mr. and Mrs. Enanuel Bastady, Mrs. George Cole and children, Mrs Pauline Cole, Mrs Johnson, Mr. and Mrs Ben Calloway, Mr. and Mrs Wm Calloway, Mr. and Mrs Wm. The General Petit well at Thompson no. 3114 feet this week initial flow of 400-4-2 the luck was no drilled to the pump and the to do is not over 7-4-3 stands cemented No. 1 is drilling in 955, Marshburn No. shale and boulders 2150 is in the same No. 4 at 2150 showers Stern No. 5 complete with calf feet. Hugo No. 1 is being deepened for Hugo No. 2. Drilling on Heff McKeen Drilling Co.'s work is Close to 2000 feet drilled. 13 at 1150. The drill is still in the hard formation and has slowed up the speed of hole making considerably. Tonner No. 12 is rigging up and will start drilling before the end of the week. No. 11 is also to start in a few days. Drilling at No. 6 is at 2945 and No. 12 at 2955 respectively. At 340 the soft clay formation struck soon after starting to drill gave the La Habra Midway so much trouble that a string of 15-1-2 inch pipe was set. Drilling is now going ahead at 400 feet. Development work continues to go steadily ahead in the old Olinda field by all the companies operating. The Olinda Land Co., one of the oldest concerns in the field started a new well a few days ago at No. 23. No. 22 has been held up temporarily fishing for a baller at 2435. The National Exploration Co. in starting to drill Chino No. 1 in Chi-no Canyon is going away out from the proven field and the venture can WE SELL Orange Groves that carry the packing house returns to back them up. AMAL. BREEN NO. 1 MAKES 250 BARRELS (Richfield-Placentia) The Amalgamated Oil Co.'s Breen No. 1 brought in last week with an initial production of 250 barrels is holding up splendidly and it appears that it will make one of the good wells of the field. Mann No. 1 stands cemented at 3000. Page No. 1 at 500 is drilling in conglomerate and Potter No. 1 is drilling in hard shale at 2100 feet. Drilling at 3325 in a white water sand the Bixby Syndicate has remained unchanged during the past week and is giving no encouragement. The United Oil Co. will make an oil well out of the Clark Oil Company's Wetzel well at Richfield yet. The redrilling work has steadily advanced until now it is at 3200 and going nicely. The Clark well is near the Standard's big Kraemer gushers and has every chance to make a well. The Fullerton Oil Co.'s Anaheim Union is nearing the deep oil sand that has made the Richfield district famous. At 3825 the Fullerton's Anaheim Union is drilling in hard sand and going down fast. The General Petroleum has a nice well at Thompson No. 4. Drilled to 3114 feet this well came in with an initial flow of 400 barrels. At Group 4-2 the luck was not so good. This one drilled to 3225 being put on the pump and the best it is expected to do is not over 75 barrels. Group 4-3 stands cemented at 3130. Brown No. 1 is drilling in conglomerate at 955. Marshburn No. 1 at 2875 is in shale and boulders. Osman No. 1 at 2150 shows shale and boulders. Stern No. 5 is rigging up to complete with cable tools at 3000 feet. Hugo No. 1, a small producer brought in a few weeks ago at 3200 is being deepened. A rig is going up for Hugo No. 2. Drilling on Heffern No. 2 by the McKeon Drilling Co. is going nicely and the work is showing up good. Close to 2000 feet of hole has been drilled. Osman No. 1 at 2150 is in the same formation. Stern No. 4 at 2150 shows shale and boulders. Stern No. 5 is rigging up to complete with cable tools at 3000 feet. Hugo No. 1, a small producer brought in a few weeks ago at 3200 is being deepened. A rig is going up for Hugo No. 2. Drilling on Heffernon No. 2 by the McKeon Drilling Co. is going nicely and the work is showing up good. Close to 2000 feet of hole has been drilled. Drilling on the Long Beach Consolidated's No. 1 is now at 2535. At this depth the formation is hard shale, and to date little if any showings have been noted. The oil showings that caused some excitement at the Placentia-Pacific Oil Co.'s well a few weeks ago have entirely disappeared and now at 2,850 the formation is brown shale showing a little gas. It is the prediction now that the big sand will be picked up at 3200 feet. The Placentia Oil Co.'s long fishing job is proving very discouraging as well as very expensive. At 2705 a twist-off occurred leaving a lot of drill pipe in the hole. Some of this has been washed over and cut off. A large part of the pipe, however, is still in the hole. The fishing job has delayed the drilling on the well for almost three months. The mishap may break the small concern. Just as the deep oil sands were being pierced and indications strong for a nice well the Petroleum Development Co. well met with mechanical trouble at Bradford No. 1 drilling at 4110 feet and lost about 100 feet of hole. This is now being successfully redrilled. Bradford No. 3 is drilling out the cement and testing for water at 3800. Bradford No. 5 is redrilling at 3400. Bradford Bros. No. 3 at 2560 is in shale and boulders. The Community No. 1 a deep well of the field is at 4095 in sandy shale. Richfield No. 2 shows 1200 feet of hole in hard sand. The Petroleum Midway still holds its place among the big ones developing the Richfield district. This week the Petroleum-Midway started drilling on Krug No. 1 and made some 450 feet of hole. A location for Krug No. 2 has been made. Yarnell 4-A at 2250 is in the oil sand and will make a nice well. Yarnell No. 11 at 3450 is in shale. No. 12 close to 2200 in the oil sand. No. 14 is making good progress with 1800 feet of drilled hole The Isaacs well at 2900 is showing a good looking sand and should make a nice well. Richfield No. 1 is making splendid time, 2560 feet of hole has been made in a few weeks. The Richfield Consolidated's No. 2 is presenting probably one of the most difficult problems a well in the Richfield has ever presented. The well seems capable of making lots of oil. It flows every once in a while at 700 and 800 barrels. The sand bothers considerably and at times the gas pressure rises so high that there is danger of the well blowing out and getting away. The six-inch string is monthly payments $25.00; rented for $28.00; Trade equity for auto. H. R. SCOTT, Real Estate, LIFE & FIRE INSURANCE 112 N. Los Angeles St. Phone 505 FOR SALE BY C. C. Cuff No. 1 now shows 4445 feet of hole in the brown shale. Vejar No. 1 at 4465 is not showing anything in the hard sand and looks rather doubtful of getting anything. Fifty-one days was all the time that elapsed between the time the Keck Drilling Co., spudded in one No.1 for the Wonder Oil Co., at Richfield, drilled 3300 feet of hole and set a string of pipe. In consideration of the long stretch of hard conglomerate and being a new comer in the field the achievement is worthy of mention. Drilling now at 3300 the formation is a sandy shale showing some gas. The Union Oil Co.is not satisfied with the performance of some of the Chapman producers recently brought in and will deepen them in the hope of materially increasing the production.Rigging up for deepening No.3 under way, and work will start in a few days on No.2 for the same purpose Chapman No.5 stopped drilling at 4056 feet and is being tubed for production.No.6 is drilling at 3325 in hard sand Chapman No.7 drilled to 4260 is held up with some pipe trouble at 3200.No.9 was put on production a few days ago at a depth of 3160.At the present time this well is making 190 barrels.No.10 is held up with a fishing job at 2875.Drilling on No.12 is going nicely at 1450. The Isaacs well at 2900 is showing a good looking sand and should make a nice well. Richfield No. 1 is making splendid time, 2560 feet of hole has been made in a few weeks. The Richfield Consolidated's No. 2 is presenting probably one of the most difficult problems a well in the Richfield has ever presented. The well seems capable of making lots of oil. It flows every once in a while at 700 and 500 barrels. The sand bothers considerably and at times the gas pressure rises so high that there is danger of the well blowing out and getting away. The six-inch string is now being put down deeper to protect the well. It is only a matter of getting the well under perfect production condition when the Richfield-Consolidated will have one of the big wells of the Richfield district. The Richfield Yorba Oil Co. is still continuing its experiments with an air compressor for pumping oil. As yet the compressor has not produced any oil, the sand in the well clogs up the pipe and blocks the compressor's work. Whether it will be successful or not remains to be seen. Drilling at 2800 feet the Ridge Oil Co.'s No. 1 is believed to be getting close to the oil sands. The formation at 2800 feet was clay and boulders. It is the opinion of some that this well will prove another Chapman No. 1. The location is considered extremely good. The Selby-Root-Hogue Oil Company is drilling a deep well at Dominguez No. 1 that will prove something one way or another. This test well is now making hole at close to 3300 feet. The formation now is a fine white sand that is neither showing oil or any indications of oil. At the Wardman No. 1 drilling is now at 2800 feet in brown shale that is showing streaks of sand. The big well of the week at Richfield was brought in by the Standard Oil Co. on the Kraemer No. 2 property. No. 11 drilled to 4283 came in doing 1450 barrels of 27 gravity oil. Close to 4300 feet this well along with Kraemer 2-land 2-8 shows what can be expected from the deep wells in this field. The next big well looks like Kraemer 2-10, now drilling in the oil sand at 4000 feet, 2-12 at 2600 is in hard shale, and 2-13 spudding in the first of the week shows 450 feet of hole. K.2-14 is building rig. Not satisfied with fast time with a Reed Roller bit at 1300 feet. At 3745 some water showed up in Dickson No. 1 and this is now being shut off. C. & D. No. 1 at 4025 feet is in oil sand and is looking very good. The deep Shop-ard well is in grey sand and standing idle at 4670 feet. Stern No. 1 just as it was about to be made ready for production at 3410 met with a fishing job and is being temporarily held up.
