And feel for what their duty bids them do. Byron. RESEARCH IN FOOD HERE BIG BOQUISITION There has come to Stanford University and to the state of California a big and important honor and a valuable acquisition in the establishment of a food research institute at the Palo Alto institution by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, in conjunction with the university, with a $700,000 fund to be spent in ten years—this fund to be provided by the corporation. The institute is to be devoted to intensive study of the problems of production, distribution and consumption of food. This really important movement comes to California and to Stanford chiefly because of the great work and remarkable talents of Herbert C. Hoover and because of the "unique collection of documentary material relative to the economic side of the war" gathered by Mr. Hoover during the great struggle. Mr. Hoover was the first to suggest such an institute and doubtless will cooperate actively in promoting its work. The World War demonstrated the need of effort of this kind. The importance of scientific knowledge applied to production and distribution of food and the manner of its consumption cannot be gainsaid. The greatest crisis the world ever experienced showed that science is of measurable benefit to the human race in conservations and diverse services along these lines. That these highly important researches, which will be followed with interest all over the civilized world, should be made here in California, in connection with one of the great educational institutions of the West, is extremely gratifying to all loyal Californians. Two women in elegant attire stand near a window, one holding a large hat and the other carrying a bag. They appear to be engaged in conversation or observation of something outside the window. The background features trees and a garden-like setting. This Week is National Silk Week from Coast to Coast THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA NATURE IS kind and healing to those who obey her laws. NO PRESIDENTIAL cabinet would be complete without a California man in it. THERE WILL be airplane routes clear around the world within a few years. UNCLE SAM insists upon having standing room of his own on the island of Yap. PRESIDENT OBREGON, of Mexico, uses a species of pacification that really pacificates. UNCLE SAM insists that Europe and Asia shall not monopolize the mandate business. BASEBALL MUST be clean or the public will penalize the game by holding patronage from it. NOW LET the California legislature apply the Golden Rule, and do unto the people as it would wish to be done by. THE HARDING cabinet has its weaknesses. But it also has its strong men. It will compare very favorably with the cabinets of recent years. THE TRUTH about California is promotionally effective. There is no need to exaggerate, nor is there any excuse for exaggeration. AS THE season of spring fever comes on, it is to be hoped that more and more persons will become infected with the building fever. THERE SHOULD be a greater measure of co-operation among all elements of the American people in social, political and industrial activities. EUROPE reasonably may look to America for a certain amount of economic help. But they must learn over there, the lessons of self-help. THE DRY SEASON In California soon will begin. This is an oppor-tune time for all to resolve to be extremely careful with fire in forest reserves and elsewhere. FROM OX team and "prairie schooner" to the latest model airship is a far cry in swift transportation. But there are those yet living who have witnessed this evolution. EVERY MAN owes it to himself and to society to take a few minutes daily for silent, intense self-communion. In this way only can one make steady advancement in character development. These silent self-communings can be made stimulating to the moral nature and inspiring. THE UNITED States gave of blood and treasure to bring victory in the World War. It has a right to a voice in establishing mandatories over former possessions of Germany. FLYING ACROSS the continent at the average speed of 98 miles an hour is phenomenal now. But the time is not far distant when the continent will be negotiated at almost twice that speed. Possibilities of speed in the air are practically limitless. THIS CONTINENT is crossed, by airplane, in less than 24 hours. There are pioneers yet living who can remember when it required weeks, by the fastest conveyance then available, to cross from the eastern states to California. The swift evolution of swift transportation is one of the marvels of this wonderful age. L. N.
