Jaffa of the Univ. of Calif., Div. of Nutrition. He said: "The avocado combines a natural combination of fruit and oil. The fact that the Cubans prefer this fruit to any other of their abundant supply may be due to its flavor alone, but it is more than likely that the preference is more deep seated, and that it is the result of generations of experience or of a knowledge of its beneficial effects." The avocado was introduced into California, at Santa Barbara in 1870. The shipment will go forward Saturday. The carload will be from the Central Lemon association at Villa Park, and the association's choicest pack will be offered. Development of shipping facilities by water promises to result in great advantage to lemon growers. The freight rate by water is 70 cents a hundred pounds. Altho the boat route is through the tropics it is not necessary to provide refrigeration for lemons, ventilation being sufficient to keep them in good condition. It is announced that preparations are being made for shipping a large consignment of oranges direct to Liverpool and London. Orange county oranges will not figure in this shipment, as the consignment will be entirely of navels, which are not producing very large quantities in Orange county. The county is essentially a valencia district, and to a more or less degree an exclusive one. All citrus growers are interested in the rapid development of water transportation methods for handling citrus fruits and are anticipating the time when a very large proportion of the crops of Southern California will be shipped by water, according to the statement of men prominent in the industry. A shipment of 10,000 boxes of lemons from Fullerton and other points in Orange county will leave San Pedro Wednesday for Liverpool. NEW SANTA ANA C. OF C.
