Electric Truck Revolutionizes Far East Unloading
EAST is East, and West is West,
but even the Far East is learning the economic superiority of the Yankee "modern improvement" in freight-moving as a substitute for the straining and sweating of its coolie labor.
The familiar electric truck, driven by a man standing at a controller bar in front, and its long train of trailers "snaking" behind, which we nowadays see in nearly every big railroad or steamship freight houses in the United States, is revolutionizing unloading operations in every port in the world, almost.
Probably nowhere have the trucks worked a greater revolution than along the docks of the Chinese ports where for years past the Chinese coolie with his homemade wheelbarrow has been the one dependable freight handler. These devil wagons, as the Chinese have dubbed them, do the work of a score of coolies with a tremendous saving of time, which even in slow-going China is a growing consideration.
This is the only one Yankee foreign trade victory of recent years that will be related to the 3500 American business men expected to attend the eighth annual convention of the National Foreign Trade Council in Cleveland May 4, 5, 6 and 7.

SUPERVISORS HOME FROM CONVENTION
Orange-co supervisors today expressed themselves as being more familiar with state problems and proposed improvements as a result of having attended the state convention of supervisors held at Visalia the latter part of last week.
The Orange-co board, accompanied by Purchasing Agent F. W. Slabaugh and County Engineer J. L. McBride returned late Saturday evening making the trip by automobile. They say they could not get hotel accommodations at Visalia and were compelled to stay overnight at Hanford, 22 miles distant. McBride stayed at Tulare.
One of the principal topics of discussion at the convention was the Marshall plan for irrigating 12,000,000 acres of arid lands, most of which is in the San Joaquin valley. Two million acres have already been put to irrigation under this plan.
The plan as proposed by Colonel R. B. Marshall, a government engineer, also provides for diverting the waters of the Kern River over the mountains into Southern California.
According to Supervisor S. H. Finley, this would have to be accomplished by means of an aqueduct over the mountains such that built by the city of Los Angeles for water supply purposes. The plan, while considered feasible, will not be worked out for several years, in the opinion of the supervisors!
The convention went on record as being in favor of the King tax bill and opposed to an ad valorem tax. Another resolution memorized the U.S. senate not to enter into a treaty that would override the California anti-alien land law with any foreign country.
Chris Jorgensen, Fresno, was elected president of the supervisors' association; Joseph Mulvihill, San Francisco, vice-president, and Joe Foster, San Diego, treasurer.
The next convention will be held in Eureka.
A disturbance followed the adjournment of the convention at Visalia, when objection was made by the San Francisco delegation to an attempt by Captain Richmond Pearson Hobson to plead for the adoption of a resolution favoring the Harris prohibition enforcement act.
not exceed three cents on the $100 valuation"; indorsed the bill to assist tuberculosis hospitals, and urged that no legislation be enacted placing "too great a burden" on automobile stage lines.
ONCE DODGED ARREST BUT NOW IN TOILS
John Lofgren, alias Melvin C. Holden, sought by Deputy Sheriff Charles Holbrook for several months on charges of passing worthless checks, was enroute today to the military prison at Alcatraz, where he will serve a sentence of ten months.
Military authorities at San Diego state that Lofgren was court-married, found guilty of desertion and disregard of military orders and given a dishonorable discharge from the army. He will have to serve his sentence, however.
According to Deputy Sheriff Holbrook, Lofgren is partner of E. O. Bunkelman, recently sentenced to 14 years at San Quentin on a charge of passing bad checks. Holbrook says that Lofgren passed most of the alleged worthless paper at various points in this county during September, October and November, last. From 15 to 20 checks were passed, aggregating something over $300, it was asserted.
PUBLISHER KELLOGG FACES
TRIAL UNDER AUTO LAW
PASADENA, March 1—F. W. Kellogg, business manager of the Los Angeles Express, Pasadena Post and Anaheim Herald, objects to the Pasadena city law which requires citizens not to take left hand turns with their auto at Raymond avenue and Colorado street.
Kellogg was arrested on a charge of violating this ordinance by Crossing Officer Cliff Farmer. This morning when his case was called in police court, the publisher was represented by a reporter of his paper, who entered for him a plea of not guilty and demanded a trial by the court, which was set for Wednesday. That Kellogg had previously been warned that he could not turn the corner is stated by the officer.

A disturbance followed the adjournment of the convention at Vissalia, when objection was made by the San Francisco delegation to an attempt by Captain Richmond Pearson Hobson to plead for the adoption of a resolution favoring the Harris prohibition enforcement act. The meeting had held together after the adjournment to hear Captain Hobson, but the San Francisco delegates attempted to rule him out of order. A. G. Johnson of Laton Fresno-co, charged the delegation with being controlled by the "whisky ring." Strenuous exception was taken to his language and he apologized.
Other resolutions adopted by the convention approved the bill regulating motor truck loads; asked more protection for county supervisors from damage suits growing out of accidents on county roads and bridges; approved the flood control bill if the tax levy provided does
