After lagging 20 years behind the other grain producing regions of the world, California farmers have at last become convinced that the annual expenditure for sacks and for the extra labor in harvesting that they entail is totally unnecessary and that they are entitled to a larger share of the actual returns from their crops. This reform may be credited very largely to the new impulse toward cooperative marketing. Grain growers have known for years that the cost of sacks was a burden, that handling the grain in the bulk was easier, quicker and cheaper, that the losses from rats and mice and from gnawed and torn sacks could be reduced to practically nothing by storing in metal grain bins and vermin-infested elevators and number of... Weigh Master Anaheim Feed & Fuel Co. 160 ACRES In Wasco. Shafter District Kern County 80 acres under cultivation. 20 acres ready for vines. Pumping plant, reservoir, tractor, mules, farming implements. The best farm buy in Kern County. Will sacrifice and make terms to sell quickly. A. W. THRESHER 012 Wall St., Los Angeles, Cal. This reform may be credited very largely to the new impulse toward cooperative marketing. Grain growers have known for years that the cost of sacks was a burden, that handling the grain in the bulk was easier, quicker and cheaper, that the losses from rats and mice and from gnawed and torn sacks could be reduced to practically nothing by storing in metal grain bins and vermin-proof elevators, and a number of other things of the same sort which, taken together, would seem to make the change inevitable; but it has required the cooperative marketing movement to turn the trick at last. The minute the representatives of the farmers got together to discuss ways and means for placing their produce on the market without paying tribute to the middlemen it became apparent that they couldn't afford to fool around any longer with jute bags. Center St. Anaheim, Calif. — Phone 1 — THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA UNUSUAL INFLUX OF CHINESE EGGS NOW Importations of Chinese eggs to this coast have assumed succ importance the last month, according to figures at the various ports, that soon they will very likely be a factor to be reckoned with not only in the coast markets but all over the country. The situation is such that egg handlers are expressing fear of the result and steps have been taken to fix an emergency tariff. Over 6000 cases were unloaded last week at northern ports and are being shipped east for the most part. The week previous 25 cars of these imported eggs were taken east to New York and Montreal with some destined for London. This indicates the extent of the movement of these low priced eggs into the United States and gives an idea of what effect they will have on our markets if the movement continues. J. H. Barber, general manager of the Poultry Producers of Central California, says: "Chinese eggs can be put on board ship at Shanghai at a total cost of about 5 cents a dozen. Adding freight and insurance they can be delivered at San Francisco at a profit for less than 10 cents a dozen. They offer, therefore, a tempting field for the speculator. As the cost of producing eggs in California even at present feed prices, averages at least 40 cents a dozen, it is easy to see what a large margin of profit there is in Chinese eggs. The only thing that will stop them is a substantial imputation duty, and surely we are entitled to a tariff that will, to some extent at least, offset the difference in living conditions between the United States and China." Advices from Washington indicate there is no possibility to have enacted the desired emergency tariff on imported eggs at the present session of congress. L. Wakeham of Greenville. His figures show that she produced 2439 pounds of milk, testing four and seven tenths per cent which makes 114.6 pounds of butterfat for 30 days. This same cow produced 93.4 pounds of butterfat last month. It is very interesting to note the variety of feed she has had in her ration and the scientific manner she has been handled. The concentrates were: Ground barley 8 parts, coconut meal 4 parts, beet pulp 6 parts, wheat bran 2 parts, cotton seed meal 3 parts. This grain is fed at approximately one pound grain to six pounds of milk. The roughage was made up of alfalfa hay and bean straw, half and half. The succulent part of the ration is a good quality of corn silage. This record shows there is a great improvement being made among the dairymen in weeding out boarders and following more practical systems of feeding. Wakeham's cow is five pounds of butterfat and one pound of milk higher than any cow that has ever been tested by the dairy department of the Orange-co Farm Bureau.
