News of Fullerton EDISON EXPERTS TO MEET CITY BOARD Experts of the Southern California Edison Co. will appear before trustees in Fullerton tonight to submit final figures for the cost of installation of the proposed white way lighting system in the business district. It is expected that the figures will show a cost of approximately $2.57 per running foot and a recent estimate made rather hurriedly, indicated that the total cost would probably reach the sum of $23,000. A week ago the city trustees decided to reduce the number of lighting standards of the ornamental system from 85 to 65 in the general estimate so that the total cost will not amount to as much as originally estimated. Until this change was made a week ago the street frontage embraced by the proposed ornamental lighting system was about 900 feet, but this has been reduced 75 feet or more. WOULD TAX P. E. $1.060,000 E. M. Wade, secretary of the P. E. railway, was in Fullefton today conferring with officials of the First National bank relative to trying to bring about more economy in taxation. The people of Cal., it is said, are taxed $25 per capita compared with a per capita tax in Illinois of a little more than $4 per capita. Mr. Wade also represented the tax investigation and economy league. He stated that the tax of the P. E. in 1915 was $360,000 compared with $789,000 in 1921. The proposed increase in taxation, he stated, would bring it up to $1,060,000. SHOWER FOR MISS BECK A shower was given Miss Margaret Beck, secretary in the office of L. E. Plummer, last night by a party of the high school faculty, following the announcement of Miss Beck's engagement to John Ustick, an employee of the First National Bank of Fullerton. The shower was under the direction of the Misses Marion and Henrietta Helm and François Campbell, other members of the high school faculty participating. Festivities were opened by the passing around of valentine hearts with verses on them which the recipients had to fill in. This contest was won by Miss Mary Braly. Miss Beck was required to read a poem which had been composed by the members of the faculty and do as she was instructed in the poem, the composition telling her where each of her presents were hidden. She received a large number of very beautiful gifts. Refreshments were served. — Dance at Olinda Thursday. LAUNDRY FIELD COVERED Fullerton has just been visited by two enterprising laundry men from the east, George W. Farrington and Ernest E. Somerton, who were looking over this field with a view of establishing a new steam laundry here. They found, they said, the field so well covered by the local Sanitary laundry and one or two others that they decided it would be unwise to put in a plant here. IRWIN IN AUTO ACCIDENT Secretary W. M. Irwin of the Board of Trade had an exciting experience Saturday, while driving his automobile on the outskirts of the city. An unknown woman at the wheel in another car drove up and in the effort to turn in to park her car stepped upon the accelerator and smashed into Mr. Irwin's auto with great force. It was damaged so that it had to be hauled to a repair shop. THREE SIGN BLUE SUNDAY PETITION Fullerton doesn't want a blue Sunday. FULLERTON RAISES $700 FOR DISABLED The city of Fullerton takes no back seat when it comes to a question of extending the helping hand. Fullerton has responded generously to the appeals for aid in connection with raising funds for the establishment of a home in Los Angeles for disabled ex-service men. The Fullerton club raised about $165 and the men's Bible class, meeting in the Rialto, recently gave $40. It is interesting to note that more than $700 was realized from the recent benefit entertainment at the high school auditorium under the auspices of the American Legion. UNUSUAL SURPRISE PARTY An unusual surprise party occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Douglas on Union Avenue Friday night. The guests arrived in response to invitations to a birthday party and thought that they had thoroughly surprised Miss Mildred Butterfield who makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Douglas, while in fullerton. While all were engaged in playing games a messenger entered with a telegram announcing the engagement of Miss Mildred Butterfield and Arthur David Belt of Los Angeles. Miss Butterfield's mother was then presented. After the excitement had subsided, the messenger appeared with the following telegram from Redlands: "This is to announce the engagement of Miss Ruby Alma Roth to Orla Hirecel Jencks." Mrs. Roth and Mrs. Jencks then entered and were introduced. Then each guest in turn opened a heart giving advice and suggestions. When one revealed the secret of her heart with a shower of little red hearts bearing the following names: Luella Charlotta Maybes and Rolla Colfax Mouck the guests were completely overcome with surprise. In her most charming manner Miss Dorothy Brown sang two beautiful songs. Refreshments were served, consisting of pineapple ice, heart shaped cakes and candy in pretty red favor baskets. Miss Frances Swap, of Bren, was taken to the Fullerton general hospital in a Scale ambulance Saturday night. Her condition is reported to be serious. FIREMEN HANDICAPPED BY THE THOUGHTLESS Thoughtless spectators, rushing in machines and afoot to fires, oftentimes handicap seriously the work of firemen. In Los Angeles, a few nights ago, there was a spectacular fire in a studio. Streets for three or four blocks in the neighborhood were jammed by the curious, in autos and afoot. Heavy loss is attributed directly, by the assistant fire chief, to "the criminal negligence and selfishness of hundreds of motorists who blocked the streets near the fire and kept the fire companies from reaching the scene." This is indeed, potentially criminal. Human lives might have been stake in the burning buildings. And yet these thoughtless persons, indifferent to the loss that might result from their obstructing of the streets, held their place while fire companies had to go several blocks out of their way to reach the fire. Practices like this should be penalized heavily by ordinance. The person or persons who would have buildings burn and maphap human beings perish while they stand by, curiously to look on, and thereby prevent rescue by firemen, should be punished severely for this heartlessness.
