OLD CEMETERY NOW
CENTER OF OILFIELD
Where half a century ago sorrow,
squatters gathered around upon a high
piece of ground to bury their dead,
today centers an interest that is as
wide as the oil industry of California.
Where half a century ago wild hogs rooted in the tules, today monwith giant drills and heavy casings
are boring straight down for the riches
that lie half a mile below the surface.
To those who visit the new oil field for the first time, the scene is
entrancing. The romance of the oil industry fairly grips the visitor.
Here where the poor squatters lived in shacks until they were dispossessed by order of court, where stock wandered for years, where in later years there has been drainage
and farming advancement, there is an activity that borders upon frenzy.
At least it seems like frenzy when the pounding of pipe, the whistling
of steam, the rushing of automobiles and the excitement that investors
and property owners feel is compared to the sleepy landscape—the low rolling foothills, better named, perhaps as mounds instead of foothills—and
the nearby swampy areas.
In one year the dynamite that comes with the discovery of gold or oil has touched Huntington Beach, the dynamite that gets into the blood of human beings and lifts them skyward out of the hum-drum ways of making money. Dynamite—

Standing on Reservoir hill, which
is the hill that the squattors used
as their burying ground, one looks
out upon a growing forest of derricks. At the edge of the reservoir
is the great hole blown by the terrine gasser brought in a few weeks
ago by the Amalgamated. Twisted
iron, broken timbers, a hole that
looks as though it might have been
made by a giant blast of T. N. T.
In No Man's Land is gazed into wowderingly every day by scores of people.
Close to this wonder-hole the
Amalgamated has erected a new derrick and is forcing a hole downward
into the very sands that produced
its disaster. This time, however, procautions are being taken to anchor
the outfit on top of the earth so that
the unchained devils of the earth
below cannot destroy with impunity
as they did when they wrecked vengeance upon the Amalgamated for disturbing a slumber of uncounted centuries.
A few hundred feet to the northwest are the two producers of the field. One of them is Old Faithful of the Standard company that proved to the world that there is a wonderful field at Huntington Beach. Farther to the northwest among numerous new derriicks is the blackened derrick of Bolsa No. 1, which was declared when it came in with a roar to be the greatest well the country has ever had. It was a wonderful well, but the great power beneath the earth threw sand and rocks in vast quantities and smashed up things down below, with the result that the pips was entirely put out of commission, and the well is now being re-drilled, with the expectation that it will live up to its promise of tremendous production.
On the north slope of Reservoir hill is a race that ought to give material for some magazine writer's romance of the oil fields. Here is a contest royal in which skill and luck and money are matched against each other for the mastery of oil sands far below the surface. The Texcal got hold of a city lot in between the big accrease leased by the Amalgamated on the south and the West Whittier Oil company on the north. Directly across the road on the west is Standard Oil company property leased from the Huntington Beach company.
the road just as close as it could get, came a derrick of the Standard brand.
Derrick to the right of it, derrick to the left of it, derrick to the front of it, Texcal certainly started a merry little war.
The reason for this close-up drilling can be quickly explained. Suppose Texcal got down into oil sands and brought in a big well. It would pull oil from a direction. It would pull oil from underneath the Amalgamated to the south, the West Whittier to the north, and the Standard across the road. So what was there left to do? Each of the three surrounding companies decided to get down into that oil sand at the very edge of its property and pull that oil itself. When a well is drilled close to a property line, and close to a well on the other side of that line, the oil men designate that procedure as "offsetting."
There has been a race among the drillers, for each of the four outfits was anxious to get into the oil sands first.
There are many interesting things going on in the beach field. The outlook around the high school is making a lot of people sit up and take notice. Derricks there are creeping cityward, getting into territory where the number of property owners per acres is larger.
Huntington Beach city has established some limits inside of which the city authorities say there shall be no drilling for oil.
But suppose a great gusher should be brought in right at the edge of the restricted territory?
What a temptation it would be to start a well in restricted territory to see if the city ordinance will hold water—or oil?
And off to the other side of Huntington Beach, where the Surf well is down in the real stuff, what does that mean to the future of the field.
And here and there far afield, derricks and drilling. The Vent to the north, for instance, is well away from Sunset Beach are other derricks. But who can tell what bays there are half a mile or three thirds of a mile beneath the surf Beaten track, indeed!
A year ago there was no best track in the Huntington Beach field. It was a wildest outlook pure simple. Some geologist scooted They could find no indications blowouts on the surface.
Where does the field end?
That's just it. Nobody knows that is why there is a rustling around Huntington Beach for less Farm lands and city lots far away are being tied up in leases the hope that the field will be pro-
to reach miles upon miles.

On the north slope of Reservoir hill is a race that ought to give material for some magazine writer's romance of the oil fields. Here is a contest royal in which skill and luck and money are matched against each other for the mastery of oils far below the surface. The Texcal got hold of a city lot in between the big acreage leased by the Amalgamated on the south and the West Whittier Oil company on the north. Directly across the road on the west is Standard Oil company property leased from the Huntington Beach company.
There was just room enough for one well on that lot, and the Texcal's hammers were quickly busy building a derrick for the boring of that one well.
Thereupon there was gnashing of teeth among the directors of the Amalgamated, the Standard and the West Whittier. That is, those directing the operations of those three companies in the Huntington Beach field saw that something must be done to prevent this Texcal outfit from walking away with what might be the cream of the pool though it is hardly apt, is it to use the word cream in connection with the black stuff that oil wells toss up from the region of Beclzebub?
So the Amalgamated and the West Whittler rushed up shoulder to shoulder with the Texcal. If it were possible these two sturdy giants on each side would like to crowd Texcal till it disappeared in the sky-blue above or the earth-black below. So close up against the county road these three derricks found their way, and drilling was begun. Across
