HUMILITY IS HAULEMARK OF GREATNESS.
The higher man of innate greatness is elevated, in public position or honors of any kind, the humber in spirit he becomes. In verity, the sign manual of true greatness is simplicity and humility. Men who have been elected to the Presidency of the U.S. have been signally notable for this artless spirit of humility, particularly in the home locality, among the people with whom they have spent the greater part of life and with whom they are most intimately acquainted.
Abraham Lincoln's farewell speech to his neighbors, before leaving for Washington to assume the tasks and responsibilities of the Presidency, will rank among the classic utterances for humility, for reliance upon God and upon the moral support of the people. President-elect Harding, speaking farewell words in the high school of his home town, expressed his craving for the moral backing of his home friends and neighbors during the next four years. In his talk Mr. Harding put into words his conception of the Presidency, "In a short time," he said, "I am going to assume great responsibility. It is not to be mine alone, however, because the President is only the instrument thru which the popular will is evoked." Continuing, Mr. Harding said:
"For 30 years I have been listening to public sentiment and every public servant who listens to the call of the soul of America is sure to get along. I firmly believe the soul of America is right. I firmly believe in the destiny of America, and I am going to my tasks with full confidence."
This betokens confidence in the

people and a conception of the Presidency as a co-partnership with the people in crystallizing sentiment, in evolving policies and in devising ways and means of carrying forward the operations of government.
THE WORLD is not oversupplied with moral courage.
AMERICANIZING is a process of the heart, as well as the mind.
THE HUMAN soul should have a clean, pure body for its habitation.
THE LEGISLATIVE body incapable of factional wrangling seemingly has not been developed yet.
HELP EVERY good cause, in some way. If unable to contribute money, give good thoughts and good words.
EACH OF us feels that everybody else should live strictly by the Golden Rule. But what about ourselves?
THEY WHO seek trouble usually find it. They earnestly and sensibly seek to avoid trouble, usually succeed in doing so.
SOIL PRODUCTS worth more than $450,000,000 yearly, produced in California, constitute another reason why this very fittingly is called the Golden state.
WHAT MARVELS of good character and exemplary conduct each of us would be if we, at all times, measured up to all that we expect of our neighbors and fellow-citizens.
"The POWERS that be," at Sacramento, are concerned about California blives. What they need, up there, is a bunch of olive branches to pass around among the warring elements and factions.
THERE NEVER comes a time when a business or a community can get along "Just as well" without advertising. Publicity is necessarily a continuing process, to build up a business and to promote a city.
THOMAS JEFFERSON, as president-elect, rode into Washington on horseback, hitched his animal to a paling to retrench, he or she proceed to cut off all unnecessary expenses and to manage well, with the money that is expended. The same process must be used by the government of California, if real economy is to be effected.
THE HOME, in civilized countries, is the center and circumference of human happiness. There is more genuine happiness bound up in the home of the world than anywhere else. It is vital to mankind's happiness that homes should be kept pure and that marriage relation should be kept sacred.
NO MAN or woman should become so stiffened and so formalized in dignity as to be incapable of relaxing, unbending in manner and indulging in rampful play, at times. There is nothing like this for keeping one young in mind, body and spirit. Play as children do, with complete abandon and with entire absorption in the play.
BOOKS, AND institutions of learning, and scholarly instructors, do not educate. They are the means to an end the process which embodies educating lies with the student, and with the student alone. The brain of the student is not opened, as if it were a cask, and a funnel inserted and education thus poured into the learner. To the extent that this cramming made-to-order, predigested process is attempted, educational work is farel. The student educates himself or herself, or else is not really educated.
"Two Kinds of Love," a photoplay laid in the golden foothills of California among simple, understandable people hungry for happiness, a four-act vaudeville from the best circuits will be shown at the New Fairyland theatre tonight. Tomorrow afternoon and night "Lahoma," a story of the early days in Oklahoma will be shown. It is a powerful romance set in the land of rugged canyons, sun-

THOMAS JEFFERSON, as president-elect, rode into Washington on horseback, hitched his animal to a paling outside the capitol, went inside and delivered his inaugural address. This is a fair sample of "Jeffersonian simplicity."
THERE ARE great numbers who, theoretically, admire country life, but who, when it comes to a showdown, persist in living in the city. The country needs more people so deeply in love with it that they would not leave it.

SOME PRINTER
"May I print a kiss on your lips?"
I said.
And she nodded her sweet permission. So we went to press, and I rather guess.
We printed a full edition.
"One edition is hardly enough."
She said with a charming pout. So again on the press the form was placed.
And we got some "extras" out.

By actual tests a saving of 50 per cent may be easily made, and with a little care, a saving of as high as 70 per cent of gas consumption may be made. The thick scientifically constructed walls retain all the heat units applied directly to the cooking of food. You conserve cold from ice. Why not conserve heat from the gas you use? Housewives await the arrival of the dinner hour in quiet confidence and cool composure.

The Chamber's Fireless Gas Range is a combination of the best features of the modern gas range and the fireless cooker, both built into one scientific and thoroughly tested product. It is a modern kitchen appliance in which there is loss of energy in operating. You can cook fish, onions, rice pudding and sauerkraut at same time without mixing the flavors. The Chamber bakes, broils, roasts, stews, steams fries anything.
