MARGARINE MAKING IS GREAT INDUSTRY Margarine is fast becoming one of the staple food products of the world, and So. Cal. now boasts of having one of the most up-to-date and sanitary plants in the U.S. manufacturing this article of food. This plant is operated by Morris & Co., 734 Terminal-st, Los Angeles, manufacturers of the famous Milcoa and Supreme brands margarine. Being impressed by the seemingly great demand for this product in So. Cal., I decided to gather some data in reference to same. Like many people, I have been prejudiced against the use of margarine, but my investigation into the composition of the product and how it is made has swept aside all my former antipathy toward the article. My investigation shows: That margarine is a cooked product, making it practically sterile and free from everything that would be injurious to health; That our highest authorities on food products claim margarine is about as nutritious as butter and can be used wherever butter is used with equal satisfaction, as a spread for bread or for cooking and baking purposes; That margarine costs from one-third to one-half less than butter; That margarine is manufactured under government supervision, insuring hygeneic methods in the manufacture and handling of the product; That there were 375,000,000 pounds of margarine consumed in the U.S. last year, equalling 3% pounds per capita per year; That people in some other countries consume more margarine than the people in the U.S., as will be seen from the following comparison; U.S. 3% pounds per capita per year; England 12; Holland 20; France 20; Germany 25; Belgium 25; Norway 35. It is amazing to know the vast amount of margarine that is consumed throughout the world and how much more the people of the U.S. will consume when they thorohly recognize the full merit of the product. BOLSA CHICA CORP. PAYS $20,000 BONUS The second and final payment of the bonus of $20,000 for a lease of 20 acres in the Huntington Beach field has been made by the Bolsa Chica Petroleum Corp. to J. J. Graham, the lessor. The first $10,000 was paid about three weeks ago. The acreage, which lies in section 21, 5-11, is a mile and three-quarters west of north of the Standard's Bolsa Chica No. 1, whose initial production of 20,000 barrels in one day has been the talk of the state. With the leasing of several smaller tracts on the north slope of the reservoir, and right in the nest of present active development, the Bolsa Chica Corp. will in a short time have perfected its pre-organization plans and start drilling. The Bolsa Chica Petroleum Corp. has closed negotiations for three more tracts in this field. There are lot 23, block C; lot 17, block B, and lot 23, block B, all in Garfield addition, the center of activity. One of the lots adjoins the lease of the State Consolidated on the east, another is next to that of the Texas Holding Co. and the third is surrounded on two sides by the Petroleum Midway. The State Consolidated is drilling at 2000 feet and looks very encouraging. The opening of the plant will probably be delayed for a week, according to General Manager M. Lebo, who has been working hard to get the cannery in operation. Lebo has been busy installing machinery and with the connecting up of the current, all will be in readiness for the first boatload of fish. There will probably be about 200 people employed at the cannery when it is in full operation. SAVAGE CORD TIRE UPON MARKET SOON W. S.
