GRAND JURY URGES
MARRIAGE LICENSE
LAWS BE CHANGED
Doesn't Want Santa Ana to Be Known As Gretna Green of So. Cal.
The Orange-co.grand jury in filing its annual report with Superior Judge Williams today recommended that steps be taken to correct the impression that Santa Ana is the Gretna Green of So. Cal.
After remarking that an examination showed the marriage license records were well kept, whereby when other contracting party was under age the required consent of the parent or guardian was secured, the grand jury deplores that Santa Ana is the starting point of so many unhappy matrimonial ventures. The grand jury then urgently recommends that Orange-co's representatives in the assembly do everything possible to have passed legislation requiring the residence of at least one of the contracting parties for at least 30 days in the county where and before application is made for a marriage license.
The report continues that the books and records of various county officials have been examined and found to be correctly and neatly kept.
It is recommended that the county's representatives in the state assembly urge legislation making possible the following salary changes for county officials.
Present Proposed Salary Salary
Clerk $2400 $3000
Sheriff 2500 3000
Recorder 2200 2600
Auditor 2200 2600
Treasurer 2000 2500
Tax Collector 2200 2600
SAYS BAD BUSINESS DUE TO CONSUMERS
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7—The "consumers strike" against high prices due to an "unwise campaign promulgated by the government to persuade the public not to buy" and "unwise prosecution by the department of justice of retailers charged with profiteering," is responsible for the industrial deflation confronting the country.
This is the claim of John P. Wood of Philadelphia, spokesman for the National Association of Wool Manufacturers, before the senate finance committee today.
ANDRADE LOCATES STOLEN AUTO HERE
Finds Car Unharmed on Street Corner.
M. F. Andrade, deputy marshal, lastnight in answer to a telephone call from the police department of Los Angeles, began search for a stolen car—and found it. It was standing at the corner of Sycamore and Palm-ats, and, strangely, for a stolen car, was unharmed and nothing taken from it, not even the laprobes. There was also plenty of gas left, so Mr. Andrade is trying to figure out why the thieves left it there, and where they went. The car is now at the Romaine garage awaiting the arrival of the owner from Los Angeles.

There are also suggested increases in the salaries of various deputies and clerks. For instance, in the office of county clerk, it is recommended the chief deputy be increased from $150 to $175; two other deputies remain at $125; stenographer remain at $125 and copilot at $90.
The grand jury found the county's school system in good shape and to be costing $1,850,000 per annum, of which $163,000 is contributed by the state. The remainder $1,687,000, is 65 pct. of the entire county's taxes.
Most of the school buildings were found in good shape altho new buildings are recommended for some of the western districts, notably, Laurel Centralia, Magnolia and Savannah.
The grand jury also recommenced the formation of the Orange-co cemetery district for the taking care of abandoned burying grounds.
At the suggestion of the Orange-co W.C.T.U., a recommendation was included that in view of the fact there is considerable essence containing a high pct. of alcohol being consumed in the county for intoxicating purposes, the legislature be urged to take steps to prevent its manufacture and sale.

BIG BARGAIN SALES PROVE ATTRACTIVE
Shoppers are finding some wonderful bargains at Anaheim stores these days. This is the one time of the year when the merchant is willing to take a loss, if necessary, in order to clear his shelves of the remainder of fall and winter stocks to get them out of the way before new spring and summer goods arrive.
Anaheim stores always are most attractive for consumers from all over No. Orange-co. They are more so than ever these bargain days. Of particular interest just now are the clearance sales being conducted by Sebastian Bros., Falkenstein's. The Prince Store and S.Q.R. store. All have made announcement which any housewife recognizes as real slashing of prices. Anaheim stores can compete with Los Angeles stores in January clearance sales as well as at other times of the year.

CAL. SENATE VOTES AGAINST JAPANESE BY 29 TO 0 TODAY
Bill Asking Protective Triff on Quicksilver Is Also Passed.
SACRAMENTO, Jan. 7.—The state senate today passed Senator Inman's anti-Japanese resolution by a vote of 29 to 0. The resolution is addressed to the U. S. senate and protests against any treaty being made with Japan which would extend the rights of American citizenship to the subjects of Japan.
It also declares that any use of the federal treaty-making power to nullify the alien land law of California would be regarded by the legislature as an invasion of the state's rights.
The senate also passed without dissenting vote, Senator Rigdon's resolution asking congress to adopt immediately a protective tariff on quicksilver. The resolution stated that the importation of large quantities of quicksilver from Spain, mined by convict labor, has forced all of the quicksilver mines in California to close down or go into the hands of receivers.

McCORD RECOVERS FROM HICCOUGHING
A. B. McCord was back at his post as cashier of the Anaheim National bank this morning after a four days’ attack of a very severe hiccoughing. He looks as fit as ever.
As a result of an item in The Plain Dealer, he states he received numerous suggestions as to how to stop the attack. There were more than two dozen long distance calls.
One of the most effective methods to obtain relief was to place his hands on his temples while someone held his nose and gave him a drink of water.
He found a hypodermic injection made him very sick at his stomach. He also tried a drink of vanilla extract and numerous other suggestions.
B. F. Moore, 1002 E. Chestnut-st., Santa Ana, was only one of the many to suggest remedies. He says his remedy is infallible. He has seen it work and says that the action is almost instantaneous, causing the hiccups to stop in a few minutes. A spoonful of diluted vinegar is the magical medicine that will do the work, he says. It is as simple as it is infallible, he declares. It works every time, according to Moore, who says he “regrets that anyone should be suffering from hiccoughs when this simple and neverfalling remedy, guaranteed to be absolutely harmless is always at hand.”

OFFERS TO START DRILL AT STANTON IN 90 DAYS
R. W. Edens, of Fullerton, Wants at Least 500 Acres for Seven Companies He Represents.
About 150 property owners were present last night at the meeting held at the Stanton city hall to discuss leasing property for oil drilling in that vicinity. R. W. Edens, of Fullerton, who has been active in the development of the Huntington Beach fields and who is connected with seven different companies, was present and read a lease under the terms of which he is willing to lease the property. He does not propose a community lease as was proposed at the recent meeting held by ranchers and farmers at Magnolia school.
The terms of his lease which would run for 20 years, however, are attractive, providing that the company when leaving the lease shall leave everything just as it was found unless the owner desires a well in which only water is found to be left which will be done on payment to the company of three fourths of the actual cost of the casing.
The company also agrees to take up as little space as possible, interfere in no way with irrigation ditches nor block the owner fromgress and pay full value for any damages that may be inflicted. A royalty of one-sixth is offered and if a well is brot in each lessor who may have leased his land at that time will receive $10 an acre per month until the termination of the lease. The company will hold the property on which the well is until it runs out, be that 20 on 100 years, but all the other property will revert back to the lessor at the end of 20 years. If the first well is drilled to a depth of

FOR H. S. STUDENTS
The Anaheim high school contemplates a very active evening tonight,
stated Principal J. A. Clayes this morning.
Juniors will have a party at the
high school auditorium and Sophomores will picnic at Seal Beach. The
basketball team will go to Hollywood
and try to avenge the defeat by Covina Monday night.
The new high school press has been set up and is ready for business, Mr. Clayes also stated.
1921 W. S. S. ISSUE
NOW ON SALE AT P. O.
The 1920 issue of W. S. S. has been withdrawn and the 1921 issue put on sale at the local postoffice, J. F. Ahlborn, postmaster, stated this morning. The 1921 issue is more attractive than the 1920 issue since stamps of $1 value are on sale whereas last year stamps of $5 value only were sold. Certificates can be purchased for $25, also, whereas last year the smallest certificate was $100. The larger numbers are also retained.
B. H. BELL VALENCIA
GROVE BRINGS $24,000

Mr. Stewart stated this is considered one of the very best small groves in the vicinity of Anaheim.
SAW MEXICAN RUN AMUCK
Mrs. Hugh Elkins, who recently returned from a trip to Texas, tells of seeing a Mexican kill two white men on the train, wound a third and then attack a woman. The Mexican escaped from the coach into the fields where he was shot at, but missed, by a farmer, and finally captured and landed in the jail at Georgetown. The Mexican became desperate when angered by someone on the coach saying Mexicans should not be permitted to ride in the same coach with Americans.
