Miss Mildred Finch, director of the dance department at the high school, as chaperon, left Thursday afternoon with Miss Dorothy Swope and Mr. Kenneth Wallace for Berkeley where Miss Swope and Mr. Wallace represent Anaheim in the state renaissance contest Saturday. Anaheim is one of five schools in California represented in the con- test, the other four being Los Angeles, Long Beach, Santa Ana and Corona. Each of the 50 schools contesting are represented by one boy and one girl. There is a $25 prize offered to the winning boy and like amount to the winning girl. The contestants had choice of six selections from Shakespeare, the idea being to arouse interest in Shakespeare and make the contest an annual event. The preliminaries begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Greek Theater at the University of California. There will be one set of judges for the girls and one set for the boys. Heads of the sets of judges will be Samuel Hume, director of the Greek theater, and Prof. Van Neumeyer, director of dramatics at the university. The finals will be held in the afternoon between 10 girls and 10 boys. Also in the afternoon several bay city high schools will put on scenes from Shakespeare. Local high school students have resorted to a number of schemes to obtain the necessary funds for transportation and entertainment of the contestants. One of the most successful was the sale of tags at ten cents each. K. Music will be furnished by Faber's FAMOUS HAWAIAN DOLLS PRODUCED BY ANAHEIM WOMAN It will be interesting to Anaheim people to know that the "mother" of the famous Hawaiian doll is Mrs. Elizabeth Merrill, of Anaheim, daughter of Rev. C. B. Hatch. Mrs. Merrill originated the Hawaiian doll after a visit east had called to her attention the interest taken in things Hawaiian. Todate she has manufactured and sold between 12,000 and 15,000 of these dolls, marketing them principally thru jobbers for notions. One Order for 28 Gross At one time she had 25 ladies at work on the dolls, that occasion being the filling of an order from an eastern notions jobber for 23 gross of the dolls. She ships many of the dolls to Hawaii. Mrs. Merrill found her business growing most satisfactorily until the United States entered the war, lessening the demand for her dolls somewhat, but more important, making it very difficult to get materials, in fact, some were finally unobtainable. For instance, fuzzy brown Teddy Bear material with which she covered the bodies of the dolls could not be had. Also, the raffia with which she dressed the Hawaiian girl dolls, and which comes from Madagascar, was off the market. She will resume manufacture as soon as an order placed with New York buyers for raffia can be filled. Product Well Made Mrs. Merrill has made it a policy It is the Knight of Pythias this time who will put on a dance to assist in raising funds for the installation of the new fire alarm system at St. Catherine's Orphanage.
