Somewhere in a Barn Mrs. David Holder of Buena Park has received the following epic on soldier life from Douglas Naylor who served with the Grizzlies: Somewhere in a Barn Here is a message from our grizzly 'cross the sea To tell you that we've cleaned up the Empire of Germany Now that the war is over we'll soon be on our way Bound for God's country, the Grand old U. S. A. Happy the days that cometh when in civies once more I'll stand Then will my memories harken to when I worked for Uncle Sam. There'll be many tales I'll tell you of experiences over here Some will sound real funny and others very queer Oh! won't I remember how we toured quaint old France In cattle cars; their appearance would send you in a trance. Forty men, forty rifles, forty to the pack In the cars they would jam us as each stood upon the track Then our rations, Oh! those rations, how they made us cry with grief There was beans and canned tomatoes and heaps of bully beef. True we had some bread with a can of jam or two 'Twas from this strange mixture we fashioned out our stew. Mess time! What a picnic when we consumed our dainty spread, of tin Then when the car would rattle, her wheels in shrillness grind We thot of our dear folks at home and the girl we left behind. Our rides were hard and rocky, the cars we thought would bust And many a time we murmured, "Oh God! In Thee we trust" Nearly all possessed a flat wheel which banged along the way Oh, how we wished their builders were ten feet under clay! The evening was a nightmare, what a party we all had Sleeping on each other 'twas this Mars famous fad, There were men of every age and boys still in their teens And the way they were packed in, was worse than sardines. Being closely gathered, very strange things occurred within Sometimes a foot would greet you with a poke square on the chin. My, how he cussed the culprit and felt real peeved and sore But how could the dear boys help it when jammed by three or four? Then after days of travelling we'd pile our luggage on our backs And tramp out to a village miles from the railroad tracks. The towns appeared quite pretty when we viewed it from afar But oh, how very different these villages really are! 'Tis a fact they are historic and everything is built of rock Then our rations, Oh! those rations, how they made us cry with grief There was beans and canned tomatoe and beaps of bully beef. True we had some bread with a can of jam or two Twas from this strange mixture we fashioned out our stew. Mess time! What a picnic when we consumed our dainty spread. The manner some boys ate it, one would think they'd ne'er been fed. Then after we had dined, nay could we wash our kit So we chucked same in our knapsack and never worried over it. The coming meal 'twould be slimy, simply frightful at the next But such little things as that would not make us very vexed As long as it would hold the shine we'd not swear and cuss For the mere sight of a greasy kit long had ceased to bother us. The trip we all enjoyed though we were piled within They brought back thoughts of Henry Ford and his famous bunch When jammed by three or four? Then after days of traveling we'd pile our luggage on our backs And tramp out to a village miles from the railroad tracks. The towns appeared quite pretty when we viewed it from afar But oh, how very different these villages really are! Tis a fact they are historic and everything is built of rock Their streets are winding alley and are hever built in block. Each structure is erected in crude form and ancient style And placed in any juncture where its builder that worth while. Memories I shall treasure of the billets we lived in Where fifty million insects feasted on our skin Our home a barn at one place, or a cow shed somewhere else, 'Twas there these hungry bugs in our hides made fearful welts. Yea, of our long night hiking, taking these pests along Never allowed talking, nor could we hum a song. Oh! many a weary struggle as we waded in slimy mud Often the time a chuckhole, then falling with a thud. In the dark we'd try maneuvering with barely a minute's delay, But often our combinations would utterly go astray. Other problems we'd indulge in 'till Major thought it time To pull down our tents and pack up, then fall into a line; Back to the village we'd hoof it in the same old mucky path Later repair to our billets and voice out volumes of wrath My how some men enjoyed it and after a killjoy would tell That Sherman surely spoke the truth when he said war was hell. long and at night sleep on the hard ground. Memories of numerous inspections help on many a morn They'd look over all our equipments and try to find something gone; Then of the junk they'd hand us and after we'k kept it a day They'd find out we didn't need it and hurriedly take it away I know when life is ended and I mount the Golden Stair Dear St. Peter might wonder what I am doing there, But I will assure St. Peter in words as clear as a bell I've served in the active army air I've had enough of hell. The good man will look me over from my head down to the ground And say, "My boy, you look it, so in Heaven stick around. The officers and shavetails, they always had it swell So I'll ship them P. D. Q. for a long siege in hell." Now before closing, another truth I'll tell— It's about the French girlies the papers say are so swell, They state they are neat and claim they are chic, but that is only news, We Yanks are never falling for this stuff that wears wooden shoes I've seen England, France and Our Country, now I know where lies the best, I salute you California of the famous Golden West, Surely on earth if there is a Heaven it's in that state so fine Where one breathes happiness always in her balm and fragrant air, So it's good-bye quaint old France. Faithful my visions of cherries, in the army known as beans, Recollection I've many of cleaning up old latriens; Lingering thought of swimming in water almost froze Next our breaking records of putting on our clothes, Oh, how that water chilled us, yes unto the bone 'Twas then we more than wished we'd soon bathe in our home. I can still picture rest camps where we that things would be fine, Nothing to do but lay around and bathe in cognac and wine But this proved only a dream and a sad rehearsal we found 'Twas plenty of work the whole day We Yanks are never falling for this stuff that wears wooden shoes I've seen England, France and Our Country, now I know where lies the best, I salute you California of the famous Golden West, Surely on earth if there is a Heaven it's in that state so fine Where one breathes happiness always in her balm and fragrant air, So it's good-bye quaint old France, farewell to your wine I've got a date in Los Angeles and I must be there on time To celebrate the New Year with all my friends at home, I've had my taste of traveling, so no more I care to roam.
