SOME REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BUILD AND BUILD IT NOW
Manufacturers Record, Baltimore
Build now and build rapidly is the advice given by United States Senator Underwood of Alabama to the real estate people of Birmingham, a recent address. Reviewing a whole situation, Senator Underwood said:
"We are not on a gold basis. Our body tried to get gold out of the treasury during the war, and if they had, they would not have gotten it. The Government had to have a deal of paper money; the Government needed it, you needed it. The beginning of the war you had few hundred million gold certificates and treasury notes, but I doubt if search of the pockets of all the present would reveal one gold certificate. Federal Reserve notes, based on somebody's credit, have taken their place. At one time there was $2,000,000,000 of Federal Reserve bank notes in circulation."

At age of the war you had a million gold certificates notes, but I doubt if a pockets of all the men did reveal one gold certif-ral Reserve notes, based y'rs credit, have taken At one time there were 100 of Federal Reserve in circulation."
Underwood mentioned these facts as showing that they all had a tendency to decrease the value of the dollar, and then he added:
"Building materials are not up in price—at least all of them are not—but the dollar has gone down and will stay down for a long time. There may be some falling off, but as long as you have the great amount of dollars to pay more for what you need you lose nothing by the higher values of materials. Persons who will not buy because they have to pay more dollars how are taking the wrong view. They are measuring by the wrong standard, by the wrong yard-stick."
In the course of his address Senator Underwood, based on his acquaintanceship with national affairs, urged that building operations should be vigorously pressed, and he claimed that it is not an unsafe business proposition to buy materials and build now.
The Manufacturers Record has taken the same views as those expressed by Senator Underwood. We are in a period of great world inflation and prices must of necessity remain high under this condition. Wages must be high, the cost of foodstuffs must continue high, and this means that building material and all other work must be high.
The effect of world inflation must not be overlooked. In the closing days of the Confederacy, when paper money had been issued to an enormous extent, a callco dress on a pair of common shoes sold at from $300 to $400 each, and other things in proportion. This was inflation carried to the extreme, but all inflation such as that we now have in this and all other countries has the same tendency to increase wages and the price of all things when measured by at prices higher than those that formerly prevailed, and higher than some people are hoping may prevail a year or two hence.
Patriotism and the salvation of the country from social stress and labor agitation demands that every man who needs to build and who can possibly build should do so now.
WILL PLANT MORE SWEET POTATOES
With the assurance that sweet potatoes can be kept in perfect condition for marketing the year around local ranchers and gardeners assert there will be materially increased average planted this year.
Orange-co is known to be specially well adapted to the raising of sweet potatoes, but only a comparatively small acreage has been devoted to this tuber; for the reason that the marketing season has been comparically short. This objectionable feature has been overcome through the use of a newly discovered method of preservation.
In the past great losses were suffered by all handlers in trying to keep any quantity of them over for the spring trade, the method followed being to store them in ordinary damp cellars under farm houses.
The new method consists in forcing warm, dry air through bins in which the sweet potatoes are placed for storage until a certain percentage of the moisture is withdrawn from the outer surface of the potato, which tends to harden the surface and puts the potato in a condition so that it will keep an reasonable length of time, either in house.

The Manufacturers Record, however, has gone further than the position taken by Senator Underwood. We have insisted that it is the duty of every man and every corporation contemplating building and able to finance the operation to build now without waiting for lower wages or lower materials. Broadly speaking much lower wages cannot come unless there come a period of depression which would create more social unrest and disturbances and be productive of so much harm that the cost to the individual and to the entire nation would infinitely exceed the cost of building operations today.

time, either in or out of the storage house.
By the use of this process it will be possible to place sweet potatoes in storage in the fall and pass them out to the consuming public throughout the year in perfect condition. Herefore the California growers have had a market for their otatoes only during the season of production, which has kept the industry from ing any noticeable headway in this state.
It is pointed out that the state of Georgia annually harvests a crop of sweet potatoes from 90,000 to 100,000 acres, and this with every other state within a radius of 1000 miles also producing heavily, while on the Pacific coast sweet potatoes are produced only in the San Joaquin valley and Southern California in marketable quantities.
