ANNUAL BUREAU PICNIC MAY 3RD TIME: Saturday May 3, 1919. PLACE: County Park. The big meeting of the year for Farm Bureau members and their friends has been set for Saturday May 3, at the Orange County Park. A day of instruction and recreation combined is planned for the gathering of farmers from the fourteen farm centers in the county. It will be a real get together and get acquainted meeting. A short business meeting will be called at 11 o'clock a.m. for the election of directors at large. A brief program of short talks will occupy the hour before lunch time. This program will include an address of welcome by the retiring president of the Farm Bureau, Mr. H. B. Woodrough; a musical number; a report by the farm advisor; an experience talk by a soldier from "over there." All members of the farm bureau and others are invited to make this their May day celebration. Bring your picnic lunches and spend the day in the cool shade of the giant live oaks. Further information and announcements of other events of the day will be reported next week. Watch the papers. CHEVROLET WINS MT. Hood trophy. For a number of years, automobile enthusiasts of the northwest have annually battled for the honors of putting the first motor car into Government Camp on Mt. Hood. The cup for 1919 goes to the Chevrolet, having been won during the past week by a one-on-one Chevrolet truck, driven by C. H. Cabe of Portland. This is the first time that a commercial car has ever entered for the competition and the victory of the Chevrolet truck is more than remarkable when it is considered that it broke all previous records for the first car to cover the mountain trail. REVENUE DEPUTY AT TAXPAYERS SERVICE Deputy Collector Elmer B. Burns will have an office in Santa Ana for two weeks. Collector Carter has sent deputies to the various county seats to assist taxpayers in any matters relating to internal revenue laws about which they are in doubt. Special attention is directed to that part of the law that requires each individual or corporation to file reports giving the name and address of every employee to whom a total of $1000 or more of salary or wages was paid during the taxable year. No fee is required. CARD OF THANKS We take this way to thank our many friends for their sympathy, kind acts and words of comfort to us in this hour of deepest sorrow, in the death of one we so dearly loved, and for the many beautiful flowers she loved so well. Some of the national debts of other great powers as compared to national wealth are: Great Britain.....44.3 per cent France.....41.25 per cent Austria.....84.65 per cent Germany.....38.7 per cent Germany's debt is really greater as the above figure is exclusive of the ninth German war loan and any indemnities she may have to pay. Catte have starved in large numbers while the rest have been driven off the range and sold for what the lan-guishing rancher could get for them because there was no feed. Then, the other day, a representative of the Treasury Department arrived in El Paso and called a meeting of Liberty Loan county chairmen from these afflicted districts to discuss the coming Victory Liberty Loan. They left their ranches and went to the meeting in El Paso. The Treasury Department man knew what they were up against but told them the government was going to float its last Liberty Loan to pay for finishing the war. He didn't go "very strong" because he knew that the constituents of these men, in fact these men themselves, had had no income for two years. He told them he knew it. Then came a reply that brought tears to his eyes. A tall, skinny, weather-beaten Texan unkinked himself from his seat and said: "All we want to know, suh, is how much the government wants from us on the Fifth Liberty Loan, and we will give it—within reason." He sat down! Money in that country brings 8, 10 and 12 per cent interest. The Victory Loan Bonds will probably bring between 4 and 5. These people of the wide lands in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico have no income. They are going to use some of their capital to see their government through the Victory Liberty Loan. USE YOUR HEAD Sometimes when a man wants to buy our possessions it is well to inquire into his reasons for making the purchase. Perhaps that which he wishes to obtain is of greater value than we realize, especially when the purchaser seems to make his livelihood by acquiring the commodities or articles he seeks. Advertisement to buy Liberty Bonds never explain why the advertiser wants the bonds. It might be astute to reason that he wants the bonds because they are going to bring him a profit over and above the price. Mr. C. H. Advertisements to buy Liberty Bonds never explain why the advertiser wants the bonds. It might be astute to reason that he wants the bonds because they are going to bring him a profit over and above the price he is willing to pay for them. Likewise when a man asks you to "get in on the ground floor" of a new enterprise and offers to trade you securities in the venture for Liberty Bonds, common sense should indicate that the Liberty Bonds are worth more than the securities he seeks to trade, else he would not be willing to make the transaction. Liberty Bonds are the best investment in the world today particularly for the small investor. Men experienced in finance know this. Four and one-quarter per cent guaranteed by the government of the United States is much more than 6 per cent offered as interest on the securities of some private corporation apt to be wrecked overnight by crooked management. Don't sacrifice your Liberty Bonds. Sacrifice something else. Wear old clothes, if necessary. But hold your Bonds not only as a measure of patriotism but for your own financial good. More than that, buy more than you think you can handle of the next and last Liberty Loan. When capital catches up with the flood of government securities, Liberty Bonds will go above par. Your boy will be a better man than you are if you give him a weekly allowance for Thrift Stamps. Let him buy them himself. Start figuring now on your personal quota of Victory Liberty Bonds. If you don't, start figuring on increased taxes. Guaranteed Puncture Proof ANNOUNCE To the People of N.Y. WE HAVE PURCHASED the O. A.
