COUNTY GETS ORDER FOR PAVING JOBS County roads leading to the Santa Ana and Fairhaven cemeteries are to be paved. Supervisors have let a contract for paving East Seventeenth-st from Prospect-ave, to Maybury-st, which is at the Santa Ana city limits, and the first step was taken for the formation of a road improvement district which in co-operation with the county will pave Glassell street from the Orange city limits to Fairhaven-ave, pave Fairhaven-ave from Glassell to the Fairhaven cemetery, and pave Grand avenue from Fairhaven-ave to the Santa Ana City limits. The Seventeenth-st paving is to be paid for out of the auto license money. Half of the cost of the Glassell, Fairhaven and Grand paving will be paid by the county and half by the district. The Redondo Construction Company was awarded a contract for pacing Magnolia avenue at the west city limits of Fullerton. The old paving there, being over wet land, has broken. Four inches of concrete is to be put over it. WHAT BEET SUGAR INDUSTRY MEANS As an illustration of what the beet sugar industry means to the west and how deeply the farmer is interested in its successful development, the following figures from one company will illustrate. In addition to the figures shown by the Great Western, there is the Anaheim Beet Sugar, the Utah-Idaho, the Amalgamated, the Holly and several other companies, all with probably the same proportionate increase. The total which will be paid farmers for sugar beets in the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, California, Washington and Nebraska will undoubtedly run well over $100,-000,000. The total average of beets contracted for by the Great Western Sugar Company in Colorado alone now amounts to about 170,000 acres, compared with 96,000 acres last year. Just how much additional acreage will be offered cannot be stated at this time. The two conspicuous thoughts brought out by these figures is the large cash revenue to the agricultural territory of Northeastern Colorado, general industry impetus inspired thereby in contrast to the apathy in country at the present time. The revenue from 170,000 acres of beets averaging twelve tons per acre at at $10 per ton to the farmers of Northeastern Colorado will amount to $20,400-000. This is quite a contrast to the harvested acreage of 96,000 acres in this same territory last year. This additional acreage will require thousands of extra laborers. This in turn means increased business for many other lines of industry. The beet sugar industry is helping solve employment problems for returning soldiers as out of the 370 men enlisted from the Great Western Company, 130 have been honorably discharged and all are back on the job and the proportion holds with other companies.
