ELECTRIC COMPANY
NOT ENTITLED TO
INCREASED RATES
According to the statement below from the Riverside Press the Edison Electric company was not entitled to once cent increase in rates.
The railway commission was sure asleep at the switch when it allowed this great, rich money-making organization to make exorbitant charges for a long-suffering people to pay.
If the Edison company was making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, why was it given permission to overcharge its patrons?
The big, greedy corporations of California sure have easy pickings—and the people pay the freight.
Fullerton, Riverside and every city where the great money-making corporation is raking in unearned coin should fight to the last ditch the in-

The Riverside Press says editorially:
Recently Increased
The Edison Electric company recently granted an increase in lighting and power rates by the state road commission. There comes hand an interesting sidelight on the situation. The brokerage firm Blyth, Witter & Co. is agent for the sale of $8,000,000 general and funding 6 per cent mortgage bond and $8,000,000 7 per cent gold lenture bonds of this company. Its circulars about both series they say:
"The following information is taken from official sources:
"During the past 12 years both gross and net earnings of the properties now comprising the Edison stem have more than tripled, and the year ended November 30, 1994 were as follows:
Gross earnings ..... $8,608,979
Operating expenses, including taxes, insurance and current ..... 3,300,419
Net earnings ..... $5,308,559
Annual interest charge on outstanding mortgage bonds, including this issue ..... 2,240,840
Balance ..... $3,067,719
The railroad commission of California has recently granted the company rate increases which it expected will yield approximately 100,000 in 1919."

The railroad commission of California has recently granted the company rate increases which it is expected will yield approximately 800,000 in 1919.
Largest in State
The Southern California Edison company is the largest exclusive electric company in the state. The earning record throughout its history of 20 years is such as to warrant confidence in all of its securities. In the past year, despite normal operating conditions the company earned two and one-third times interest charges on its mortgage debt and nearly twice its entire interest including this issue of debentu. The future of the company seems assured. At small expense it can increase its hydro-electric development 150,000 additional horse-power which together with the increased rates recently granted by the road commission, will insure company an even wider margin earnings."
At least this makes interesting reading to the municipalities and individuals that are paying the rates.
The only suggestion the Press to offer is that City Attorney Edilio clip this alluring statement and make us of it when the question of rehearing on surcharges for city of Riverside comes up—Riverside Press.
The board of city trustees of lerton two weeks ago decided to Riverside in asking for a rehear.

NEW WALNUT WILL GIVE BIGGER CRISP!
Good news for growers and consumers of California food products is contained in the announcement by the citrus experiment station at Riverside that a new English walnut, which promises heavier crisps and less susceptibility to blight, has been developed. The new variety known as the Ehrhardt walnut is larger than the average Santa Barbara soft-shell walnut, running 340 to the pound. It runs medium smooth and is light brown in color when properly handled at half time the nuts are well sealed at ends and the meat is easily cracked whole. Plump and well developed kernels mark the new type. The averages practically 50 per cent of the total weight of the nuts, a proof. It has not shown more than 5 per cent blight, while other varieties in the same plot have canned from 35 to 50 per cent blight.

HOW'D YOU LIKE TO HAVE SCRAP OF HUN CANNON SOUVENIR
(R. L. Bisby, Chr. Orange County Liberty Loan Comm.)
The Treasury Department has made arrangements to award a medal made from a captured German cannon to all volunteer workers during the Victory Loan. This medal will be the size of a half dollar and contains a reproduction of the Treasury on one side and certificate of loan participation on the other. Space left for engraving of name of recipient.
Orders 1000 Medals
The County Chairman has ordered 1000 of these medals for Orange-co. During the Fourth loan there were about nine hundred people who took part in the drive as volunteer workers. It is believed that one hundred more people will be used in the next drive so one hundred additional medals have been ordered.
All of you good people who have sat around and wished you could be on the battlefields of France so that you could capture a German cannon, and bring home something as a souvenir of a battle, here is your opportunity on the battlefields of Orange-co, for the Fifth or Liberty Loan. You will have an opportunity to get your souvenir and it will be a souvenir that should be prized as highly as any decoration that any soldier may receive.
