NEW LEGISLATION THREATENS SPORT OF ROAD HUNTERS A road hunter's sport is threatened. A bill prohibiting the shooting of firearms on public highways has passed thru the Senate and Assembly, and unless a reconsideration is secured it will be passed up to the governor for his signature. The gun clubs have evidently sought a way to win a point they have tried to get into law for years. Ten years ago the gunclubs tried to get the board of supervisors to pass an ordinance prohibiting the use of firearms on public roads. The gun clubs masked the proposal as a safety measure. The real purpose was to prevent hunters from shooting along the highways next to gun clubs. The ordinance was turned down. Attempts have been made to get the measure thru the legislature, and so far the plan has never worked out. This time an effort was made to shove thru a rider along with some other provisions. The bill was originally introduced in the senate by Senator Sample of San Diego. That bill, as it was read, was for the prevention of shooting from motorboats, airplanes and automobiles at wild game birds and to prevent the use of shotguns of a bore greater than a ten gauge. Somewhere along the line someone slipped in a provision to add the prevention of shooting firearms on a public highway. In that shape the bill easily got through the senate but Assemblyman Eden knocked out the objectionable part in committee, and it appears that Eden won the in harbor matters has been to give aid where something has already been done, and the best way for the harbor to secure recognition from the government, in a financial way, is to go ahead with the work. Supervisor S. H. Finley made a motion for delay until an assurance was given of governmental support. There was no second to the motion. The plans call for a jetty improvement, for dredging and for opening a new channel for the Santa Ana river into the Pacific ocean. The new channel will prevent the filling of the bay by silt. FILIPINOS NOT YET READY TO GOVERN Americans in Manila do not believe that the Filipinos are yet competent to govern themselves. This is the word that comes to Postmaster C. D. Overshiner of Santa Ana, in a letter from his son, Wm. Overshiner, who is with the U. S. Goedetic Survey. Mr. Overshiner was at home on a visit a few months ago and upon his departure left for Manila. Extracts from the letter, written on March 3, are as follows: "There are very few white people left in Manila now and about the only ones we see are just amongst ourselves. The Filipinos are trying for their independence and just the other day a large mission of them left for Washington. In the last few months the governmental affairs have been taken more and more out of American hands and put into the Filipinos', and the white people here say COUNTY GIVES $7600 In the drive for funds for the Salvation Army Home Service fund, the Elks have raised $7300 with probability that all reports are in the vention of shooting from motorboats, airplanes and automobiles at wild game birds and to prevent the use of shotguns of a bore greater than a ten gauge. The plans and specifications for the harbor as submitted by the County Harbor Commission were accepted, and the resolution calling the election was passed. With the calling of the election the active campaign upon the harbor bonds will be started. After several years investigation and delays that were unavoidable, the principal delay being because war conditions prevented construction, the question is to reach a vote. The harbor commission, composed of L. L. Shaw of Santa Ana, L. H. Wallace of Newport Beach, J. A. Armitage of Sunset Beach, K. E. Watson of Orange and J. W. Duckworth of Anaheim, with Captain Leeds and A. K. Barnard as engineers finished their report long ago, but it was not finally passed upon by the board of supervisors until this week. At that hearing the fact that the government could not give an assurance of assistance to the harbor was brought out. The general policy of the government a wire to Eden, "and will stop the poor man from duck hunting." A letter was sent to Senator Sample giving him the true inwardness of the bill. It was pointed out in this letter that the gun club member is trying to acquire the luxury of being freed from hunting from non-members of clubs. PERSHING DECORATES SANTA ANA VETERAN On March 14, Captain Nelson H. Holderman of Santa Ana was decorated by General "Black Jack" Pershing. The Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Captain Holderman for the part he played in the wonderful stand of the Los Battalion in the Argone Forest was pinned upon his breast by the commander of the American army in France. "Black Jack" squeezed Captain Holderman's right hand, and told him he was proud of him. A letter describing the ceremony of decoration was received yesterday by Mrs. Holderman from her husband who is in the 23rd Infantry in Germany, and every resident of Orange county will take pride with Captain Holderman in the honor that was bestowed upon him.
