NO PROBABILITY OF NOTICEABLE DROP IN LUMBER PRICES That there is no probability that the price of lumber will be reduced is shown in a dispatch from Washington, where representatives of the lumber industry and the industrial board of the Department of Commerce held a conference last week relative to a reduction in the price of lumber. That there is nothing to be gained by waiting for a reduction in lumber has been asserted by local building materials men for weeks. Should there be a reduction in price it would be of no great consequence and would make little difference in the total cost of a house, and anyone contemplating building should build at once. The Washington dispatch says of the conference there: "At the close of more than six hours discussion it was announced that in the absence of any organization competent to speak for a majority of the lumber producers in this country no agreement had been reached. 'Hope of an agreement was held out, however, in the decision to have a committee of the lumbermen remain in Washington for a consultation with the board. 'It is evident from comments after the meeting that the lumbermen did not hold out any proposal of material reductions in the prices of their products. John H. Kirby president of the National Lumber Manufacturers' LEAGUE OF NATION The three principal objections to the participation of the United States in the proposed League of Nations apparently are these: The Paris constitution concludes with and supersedes the constitution of the United States. The Executive Council of nine real business end of the League which the United States has but voted, will be able to order Uncle Sam about at will. The United States will be for entangled in European, African Asiatic feuds and yet will be led with its own hands to strange Monroe Doctrine. Are these really valid objects? Take a look at the good old suffering constitution of these U.S. States and observe what happen it in the last two years—without League of Nations. The Espland and Sedition Acts—war measure as distinctly violate the spirit of the letter of the constitution as an act to impose a tax of ten dollars on every red head. Yet they passed and enforced because a majority of us wanted them passed enforced. If a majority of us due deliberation, wants to end League of Nations to save us the necessity of more espionage sedition legislation, the constitution surely can stand the addition strain. It is true that the United States only one vote on the Executive Council of nine, but it is not true that representatives of any eight, six or twenty-four nations can o uncle Sam about or will try so to The gent in the striped pants is modern combination of Harvard "Hope of an agreement was held out, however, in the decision to have a committee of the lumbermen remain in Washington for a consultation with the board. "It is evident from comments after the meeting that the lumbermen did not hold out any proposal of material reductions in the prices of their products. John H. Kirby president of the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association declared production costs had gone up out of proportion to the rise in price and that the increase had continued even since the armistice was signed." The old wells are not keeping up very strong. The field is now making about the same amount as it was producing last September, or a little better than 7'-000 barrels a day. As soon as the big Chapman well gets cleaned out and down to its regular 4000 a day output, the production will rise to highest point and away over any previous figure. The field shows a total of 13 new rigs up, 107 wells drilling and completions are being made at the rate of two per week. Irvine Well is 3630 The Standard Oil Company's wildcat well at Newport is now drilling at 3630. The formation is a shale and is not showing any oil as yet. The Standard will make this hole a deep test well. Liberty Petroleum Still Shut Down The Liberty Petroleum Well still stands shut down. It seems that this company is waiting on the outcome of the Standard's deep test wey before resuming further operations. On account of water developing badly in this well a cementing was done. The cement job shut off all the oil as well as the water and now the well is worthless. Brea Canyon Will Redrill duction, two drilling, and preparations for the drilling of a third under way. No. 28 is now drilling at close to 3900 feet and is showing up very nicely. No. 21 met with a fishing job at 2000 feet and has been deleted. No. 22, a new well, is being rapidly rigged up for the immediate starting of drilling. Olinda Wildcat Holds Interest As the Ilinda Land Co.'s wildcat well in the extreme eastern end of the field goes deeper, the interest increases. At 2865 feet the present depth, the well is drilling in brown shale, and the showing of oil colors, gives the well a very hopeful outlook. No. 20 shows close to a 1000 feet of hole. West Coast near Completion The West Coast Oil Co. has its No. 62 drilling at 2950. At this depth the oil sand carried for more than 100 feet continued, making the well look exremely good. This well will be completed now in a short time. No. 69 is drilling in brown sandy shale at 2500. No. 79 drilling in the same formation at 2800 is making rapid progress and will be the next UNION BAY 131 WEST CENTRAL Cars every 30 minutes for Fullerton and Hourly service to La Habra, Whittier, Monroe A. It seems that this company is waiting on the outcome of the Standard's deep test wevy before resuming further operations. On account of water developing badly in this well a cementing was done. The cement job shut off all the oil as well as the water and now the well is worthless. Brea Canyon Will Redrill Not satisfied with its No. 28, the Brea Canyon Oil Co. is making preparations to deepen the well. This well was put on the pump three weesk ago at 2730 feet, starting off with antitrial production of 300 barrels. This output, however, quickly dwindled to less than one-third. It is believed that a couple hundred feet more of hole will make the well a good producer. The redrilling will start at once. No. 31, drilling in the shale at 1900 feet, is showing up very strong, and judging from the amount of gas and oil present the well is to be a heavy producer. The redrilling of No. 9, an old well, is to start in a few days. No. 32, a new well, is marked with a grade. No. 7 a Sticker for Columbia After fishing for three months the Columbia Oil Co.'s No. 7 still looks like a hard problem. A double section failer lost at 2630 feet has defeated every method known to the science of fishing. Fullerton Oil Co. Cements No. 13 At 2319 feet, the Fullerton Oil Co. has set its water string in No. 13. Some fast time has been made on this well. The drilling was never halted since the well started. Deepest Well Not Showing Oil The deepest well now drilling in California is the Union Oil Co.'s No. 6 on the Bastanchury Ranch near Fullerton. The well, now 5190 feet, is drilling in blue shale and is not showing the faintest color of oil or an odor of gas. The blue shale formation has continued for over 800 feet and is regarded as the longest run of any one formation ever drilled thru this field. The drilling is being done inside 4 1-2 inch casing and consequently cannot continue much longer. 125 Barrell Well on Graham-Loftus. No. 49 on the Union Oil Co.'s Graham-Loftus is now a completed project an don the beam making 125 barrels of oil. The completion depth is 3504 feet. This well now leaves only two more drilling on this once famous big well property. No. 51 is drilling in the blue shale at 2600, and No. 51 is making a hole in the conglomerate at 2500. The completion of these two wells will probably see the development work on this property brought to a close. Naranjal Property Looking Up For the first time in months the wells drilling in the Naranjal lease are all in good shape. This property presents some of the most difficult propositions ever encountered in the oil game. Due to the fact that the formation seems to stand on end it is with great difficulty that a straight hole can be maintained and frequent fishing jobs and pipe trouble has been the history of the develoemnt work. Naranjal No. 7 completed last week, is making 220 barrels an dlooks like it will hold this figure. No. 8 is standing cemented. No. 9 is swedging out casing at 2200. No. 10 is drilling in blue shale at 2460, No. 11 at 2300, and No. 12 at 1900 feet. The propperty is free from fishing jobs and all wells are making hole fast. James Pickering, a veteran of the oil game, is in charge of this property. THE OLINDA FIELD Columbia Oil Company Leading The Columbia Oil Co. is leading the development work in the old Olinda field with a new well on pro- well completed. The production on the old West Coast property, one of the oldest properties in the state, is holding up to a remarkably good figure. Some of the wells have been on the beam 15 years, and show little decline. Today the West Coast property is making better than 2000 barrels. Most of this production is high gravity oil, free from water and clean. At Ibbitson No. 1 the Amalgamated Oil Co. has had good results in shutting off water. After standing cemented a couple of weeks at 2250 the well stood the exhaustive balling test and is ready to go ahead with the drilling. On the Yorba property a rig has been completed and drilling is to commence the middle of the week. The drilling of this property is being watched with a great deal of interest in that the land is held in great favor by local oil experts. THANK PLAIN DEALER San Francisco, Mar. 26, 1919.
