PROCLAMATION FOR SALVATION ARMY'S DRIVE FOR FUNDS Governor Stephens has issued a proclamation urging the people of California to help the Salvation Army in its campaign for funds during the week of March 24 to 31. Governor Stephens alludes to the splendid work the Salvation Army has done for the soldiers in France and its un-tiring efforts to relieve suffering and distress in this state. He gives the campaign his official sanction and urges the liberality on the part of the people in giving toward his worthy organization. One of the first gifts received at Salvation Army headquarters in San Francisco in the drive for funds for home service work came through the mails from a working girl. She sent a tiny gold watch, a wedding ring, two other gold rings, a bracelet and a souvenir coin. She said that it was all she could give but it came from her heart. There was no name signed. In the next mail came checks amounting to $14,000. The Salvation Army is making a drive this week for home service funds. The state's quota is $822,000; San Francisco will raise $275,000 and Los Angeles $265,000. The Elks lodges in twenty-eight counties have taken charge of the drive. The money raised will be used to maintain and extend the home work of the Salvation Army. It will be used off men by the score daily, who was imprisoned for months as an alien enemy, arrived at Salvation army headquarters in San Francisco last Saturday, his feet bound in rags. He was discouraged, hungry and heart-sick. He was sent to the men's industrial home, given new shoes, a small sum of money and what he needed most—a bath. He came out of the home refreshed in spirit, anxious to get work and confident that the world held something for him after all. Every day such cases are turning up and the Salvation Army is meeting them. That is why it needs to make a drive for funds this week to maintain and expand its home service work to meet the ever increasing demands made upon the organization. "The Salvation Army can have the clothes off my back," said Governor James K. Lynch of the federal reserve bank in San Francisco. "It is doing a work that is practical Christianity," said John L. McNab, former United States attorney. "I count it an honor to be allowed to serve as a worker in this campaign for the Salvation Army," said Harry M. Ticknor, president of the California Elks Association. "There isn't anything too good for the Salvation Army," said Capt. Robert Dollar, president of the Dollar Steamship Co., as he signed a check for $3000 making his total subscription to the campaign $8000. That is what big men say of the Salvation Army which is making a drive for home service funds this week. Social and Personal Mrs. W. J. Lake left yesterday for The Salvation Army is making a drive this week for home service funds. The state's quota is $822,000. San Francisco will raise $275,000 and Los Angeles $265,000. The Elks lodges in twenty-eight counties have taken charge of the drive. The money raised will be used to maintain and extend the home work of the Salvation Army. It will be used to support the 33 centers where Salvation Army corps are located, where relief squadrons are ready day and night to answer calls of the poor and needy, erect needed buildings in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Riverside and Long Beach, support the Lytton home for boys and girls, maintain two rescue and maternity homes in Oakland and Los Angeles where young mothers can go in their extremity, support five men's industrial homes, woodyards, relief stations, prison work and care for all the varied activities of the Salvationists. Seventeen converts within the walls of San Quentin penitentiary were made by Salvation Army workers in that prison last month. A little group of prisoners numbering between 20 and 30 constitute the corps within the prison walls. Last month these men dealt with 30 others personally, held 65 meetings and prayed earnestly with five others. Scores of men have been redeemed through this work annually. It is one of the activities which the drive for funds this week by the Salvationists will help. A man who walked 3000 miles to get a bath, who fled from a mining camp in Northwestern Canada to escape influenza which was carrying thing too good for the Salvation Army," said Capt. Robert Dollar, president of the Dollar Steamship Co., he signed a check for $3000 making his total subscription to the campaign $8000. That is what big men say of the Salvation Army which is making a drive for home service funds this week. Social and Personal Mrs. W. J. Lake left yesterday for Fort Madison, Iowa, where she will visit with relatives and friends for three months. Mrs. Lincoln Martin, of Delta, Col., is a guest for several days with Mrs. W. S. Sheffield. Mrs. Martin's husband is in France, being a major in the army. Mrs. Will Cosgrove and little daughter of Los Angeles are visiting for a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Hollingworth. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Borth have moved from 123 South Olive street, to the house on West Broadway which they recently purchased. Alfred Bittner, son of Mrs. C. Martin, is expected to arrive in New York April 3, coming as a member of one of the parts of the 91st division. Mrs. Merton Taubman is enjoying a visit from her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry McDonough of Oakland. There are many bargains offered in the classified columns of The Plain Dealer. McKEEN & FABER 119 North Los Angeles St. Demand Increases for Savage Tires McKeen & Faber, northern Orange county agents for Savage tires, report that this famous So. Calif. product is meeting with great favor and that the demand for the "Indians" is growing daily. They report sales of this make today to Frank Goodrich who took four 35x4s, Al Launders who took two 32x4s, and Fred Heying who took one and Bert Kuebler who took two 35x4s. The importance of being close to the factory, not only in saving the expensive freights from the eastern factories, but in rapid service, was demonstrated again today. Kuebler needed the tires in a hurry. You know, Bert is quite some size, not quite big enough to hire out with Al G. Barnes as the fat man, but still too heavy to ride a car around town on the rims, so it was up to McKeen & Faber to get those tires in a hurry. They wired the San Diego factory and the tires were here, via Packard stage, and on Kuebler's car within five hours. That's the kind of service McKeen & Faber like to tell about.
