HOW TO KEEP YOUR BOYS ON THE FARM
BY M. ELTISTE of Orange
The agricultural college has helped to serve the farm in solving its boy problem. It has taught the country that agriculture is a science and its practice a profession of equal dignity with law and medicine. It has shown us that agriculture is not an occupation to be followed by the ignorant, but by men trained scientifically if the best results are to accrue.
The farmer himself deserves more credit than the agricultural school for teaching his boy to stay at home and not run away to the city. The farmer in the last ten years has made so much improvement in the farm that the whole world has talked about it, and will still talk about it.
Although the situation has not yet been thoroughly mended, the crisis has passed and an increasing number of farmers' sons are taking an active interest in the business of farming and refusing to exchange the certainty of independence in the city. Various important changes in farm training and practice have served to turn the tide. The boy could see only the hardships and privations in farm life and hoped to find better surroundings and conditions in the city. In either case, he was following natural instincts to better himself.
The farmer has learned to take farming up out of the realm of hand and foot work and put it on a brain and machine basis. The farmer now uses his brains to lay out his work, and highly efficient machines do the work. Farming is much more of a manufacturing business than it used to be.
The modern kerosene tractor adds to the satisfaction of farming by ing its owner master of the various operations rather than worried by them. The tractor is a power plant that can be used for practically all stationary or field work. It puts under the control of one individual as much power as is managed by several men when horses were used as the power source. The farm tractor and the various machines, which it operates, makes the life of the farmer and his boys full of interest, because it not only multiplies the results they may see from their work, but also represents the greatest modern im-

BIG TIME PLANNED BY AUTOMOBILE MEN
The entertainment committee of the Orange County Auto Trades Association has something big on for next Friday night at its regular meeting, which will be held at the Fullerton club rooms, preceded by a banquet.
The association some time since decided to have a meeting ever so often at which the women might be present and enjoy some of the good things the men enjoy and at the same time get in touch with what the men are doing in the interest of bettering their business conditions and improving service to patrons.
A fine spirit of co-operation and interest in service to the general public prevails with the craftsmen and organization of the association have been of vast benefit to both the garage owners and the owners of automobiles.

The Oakland Sensible Six
is today, not only a leader among all cars in point of design and high grade service, but is the only Six of established worth and reputation and large production found among the medium priced cars—in fact, it is the only Six below $1100 in price at the factory. It is the only choice of buyers who want, at a moderate cost, a highly developed car of unusual performance abilities and the high relative value wrought by efficient manufacture on a large scale.
Leads all the other cars in economy of gasoline tire and oil mileage. Have sold 19 Oakland Sensible Sixes since the holidays without a special salesman.

MUCH WEALTH FROM COUNTY'S OIL WELLS
Orange-co oil wells are producing 1,475,000 barrels of oil a month. That, at the present price of oil, means $1,743,750 a month and $22,-025,000 a year.
Twenty-two million dollars worth of oil a year!
It is a staggering sum.
The production in January reached a total of 1,354,839 barrels a month being produced by the new Chapman lease well near Placentia. This well, fitted up with pipe lines, is flowing 4000 barrels a day.
If the wells now being put down or soon to be put down as the result of the bringing in of the big Chapman gusher turn out to be good wells, the production totals will be given another tremendous boost.

HENNING PLACED ON PROBATION
Judge Williams of the Superior court has given Charles Henning probation and ordered that Henning pay $50 a month to his wife for the support of the family.
Henning pleaded guilty to a charge of having left his family destitute. The judge ordered that sentence be withheld for a year. The probation order instructs Henning to keep away from dance halls.
This ends the Henning hearing. No criminal complaint was made against Mrs. Alling, who was with Henning when he was arrested at San Luis Obispo.
