GAS VICTIM VISITS
STANTON FRIENDS
STANTON, Feb. 24.—Special—Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Riley of Stanton, have as their guest for a few days, their nephew, Corporal Albert Cox of the 362nd infantry, Co. A. A. E. F., who was in France since July. There are three of his brothers who enlisted from Montana at the beginning of the war. One in the navy and two in the army. Two of the boys have seen actual service in France, one being among the first to go across, was there since January of last year and as far as any news can be obtained is alright. The one now visiting California, when he first enlisted, was sent with a number of other boys to Camp Lewis, and assigned to the 362nd Inf. Co. A. There they were trained for many months. The 22nd of June they left for France, arriving in France about the middle of July. They were in the trenches for a number of days. Two days before the battle of the Argonne forest, he, with about 90 other boys, was taken to the hospital on account of being badly gassed.
He was in the hospital for three weeks and so did not get to go back into the lines as the armistice was signed before he had fully recovered.
On Christmas day he sailed for the United States with Casual Company No. 9, arriving on the 8th of Jan. They were sent to Camp Lee, Va., where they were detailed for 26 days for further orders and for more sufficient recovery. From there went to Camp Funston Kansas and were countries while they are operating from that base. All of the boys vote that they are ready to volunteer for the service of Uncle Sam again whenever their services are desired.
Miss Florence Whalley was absent from high school Wednesday on account of a severe cold.
Miss Elma Dohm, who formerly lived near Stanton, but now lives at Hemet, has been spending a few weeks with friends and relatives in and around Stanton.
Mrs. Carl Ayres, formerly Miss Elsie Riley of Stanton, who with her husband moved to near Bishop in Inyo county in the latter part of January, writes that they like it fine. They have a 520 acre alfalfa ranch.
Mr. L. M. Rildenour, brother of Mrs. H. A. Riley, was a week-end guest of the Riley family. He has been working in the oil fields at Coalingo, but had returned to his home in Redlands on account of sickness.
Donald Fuliveeder and Stanton Riley have been absent from school the past week on account of sickness.
The Osborn Co. shipped a car of chill peppers from here to St. Louis, Mo.
Cabbage is coming in pretty lively. Each company shipping from one to two cars daily.
J. C. Whalley was in Santa Ana Tuesday in attendance of the Orosco murder case.

He left immediately for California, where he will spend a few weeks with friends and relatives before returning to Montana where he will take up his homestead which he left when he entered the service. He tells some most interesting stories of his trip to the other side. His brother, who enlisted in the navy, is on the U. S. S. Pennsylvania and has spent a great deal of his time in Virginia and New York. He has also taken some interesting trips. One being when the U. S. S. Pennsylvania was one of the vessels which escorted the President's ship to Europe. He certainly writes some wonderful stories of his trip. A late letter from him states that he is in Gauntanamo Bay in Cuba. He says he did not like the idea of leaving New York, but that he doesn't care now, that the country he is in now is the most beautiful he has ever seen besides California. He says it resembles California, especially the mountains. He also says that they expect to visit all the islands, Panama and some South American

Julian Ballard, a colored man, who has a Mexican wife, believes that someone tried to burn his home over him and his wife Wednesday night at La Habra.
Motorcycle Officer Carr went to La Habra and made what investigation was possible. Ballard said that during the night he found a blaze against the side of his house. He looked out and by the aid of a passing electric car he saw a man running away. Ballard put out the fire.
Indications are that someone had poured oil along the edge of Ballard's house and had set fire to it.
Efforts to implicate a man suspected by Ballard failed. Ballard suspected the man because he resembled the one he saw running, not because he had had any trouble with him.
