Local Medical Group To Mark Anniversaries
Over seven decades of dedicated service to Orange County residents will be marked in Orange next week when the Orange County Medical Association celebrates its 75th birthday anniversary.
Highlight of the series of events marking the anniversary will be a dinner scheduled to be held on Saturday at the Medical Association Building, 30 S. Flower St.
The event will honor both the original formation of the organization and doctors who were admitted to membership in the society 40 years or more ago.
These include Dr. Joseph Robinson, 89, Anabeim; Dr. R. C. Cochran, 75, Yorba Linda; the oldest practicing physicians in Orange County today, and Dr. Dexter R. Ball, 70, Santa Ana, who has been a member of the association the longest (42 years).
During this span, Dr. Ball has delivered 3,504 babies, the last being delivered Oct. 13 of this year.
The newest physician in the county is Dr. Donald R. Ball, son of the senior association member, Dr. Dexter R. Ball.
Third Oldest Group
The medical association was the third county medical association to be established in Southern California and was formed Fullerton, closing the role at 14 members in 1882.
On July 2, 1889 the group held its first scientific meeting in Doctors Balls' office where he reported an interesting case of pulmonary disease and exhibited pathological specimens.
Hosts Society
Although there were no automobiles, all enjoyed an excursion about the valley in June of 1891 when the Association entertained the Medical Society of Southern California. Again they entertained the Medical Society of Southern California in 1899, still without cars. In 1908, when they had a crowd of machines, the weather put a damper on the outing.
Stories of the trials and tribulations of the early members of the Orange County Medical Association as told by Doctors Robinson, Cochran, and Dexter R. Ball give a graphic picture of courage and service of the pioneer doctor.
They point out that some of the more unscrupulous were expelled by their colleagues, while others received praise and commendation of their fellow workers for their devotion and service to the health and welfare of the citizens of Orange County.
Instruments In Saddlebags
They recall that the earliest in the early days, according to Dr. Dexter R. Ball, amounted to a college degree, which could have been either two or three years of college work, plus two or three years of working with a competent physician in the area. Doctor Cochran noted that, during the 1940's, the members responded to World War 11, many of them called to active service and temporarily crumbling the association.
But, the group's greatest growth was to come after the
Medical Science in this country has developed so rapidly in the past quarter century that medical "miracles" have almost become commonplace, Dr. Hugh J. Plumb, Jr., said in Orange today.
Dr. Plumb, president of the Orange County Medical Association, issued the statement while urging the city and county to join in the second observance of Community Health Week Oct. 18-24.
"Spurred by free Enterprise, academic freedom and outstanding community."

The newest physician in the county is Dr. Donald R. Ball, son of the senior association member, Dr. Dexter R. Ball.
Third Oldest Group
The medical association was the third county medical association to be established in Southern California and was formed only a few days after the division of Orange County from Los Angeles County in 1889.
The first physician known to have arrived in Orange County was John Augustus F. Heyermann, a legendary figure who settled in Anaheim in 1862, both to operate the first drug store and to treat the sick.
Dr. C. F. Greenleaf and Dr. A. H. Rowan arrived in Santa Ana in 1870.
Nine days after Orange County was legally separated from Los Angeles County, a group of doctors met to form the new group to be known as the Orange County Medical Association. Those present were Dr. W. B. Wall, Dr. J. A. Crane, Dr. J. N. Lacey, Dr. S. B. Davis, Dr. J. L. Dryer, Dr. C. D. Ball, and Dr. J. P. Boyd.
The group elected Dr. Wall as temporary chairman and Dr. Boyd as temporary secretary.
Elected to membership that same year were Doctors I. D. Mills of Santa Ana, D. W. Hunt of Anaheim and J. A. Blake of courage and service of the pioneer doctor.
They point out that some of the more unscrupulous were expelled by their colleagues, while others received praise and commendation of their fellow workers for their devotion and service to the health and welfare of the citizens of Orange County.
Instruments In Saddlebags
They recall that the earliest of the pioneer doctors depended on horses and saddlebags to assist them in their work. Greatest hardships that beset the early physicians were the roads, the rivers and creeks, the fogs, the rain, the cold and the fleas.
Among the most devastating diseases of the pioneer days were typhoid fever and diptheria. Drinking water, of course was the cause of typhoid fever.
Many of the ranchers depended upon the cistern water, filled from the open irrigation ditches, for their domestic use. Others were supplied with surface waters contaminated with organic matter. With the advent of the deep wells, typhoid gradually diminished.
Diptheria germs found their way into the most remote canyons to isolated ranch homes.
It was reported that in one Westinister family, seven out of nine children died within 10 days.

Dr. Plumb, president of the Orange County Medical Association, issued the statement while urging the city and county to join in the second observance of Community Health Week Oct. 18-24.
"Spurred by free Enterprise, academic freedom and outstanding teamwork at the community and national levels, the people working in the medical care and public health field have achieved more progress in the past century than in all previous centuries added together," Dr. Plumb said.
"And." he added, "an overwhelming portion of this progress has been made in the past Tools Taken

A REVIEW
By Claudia Celenze
"Well, what'd you expect, puffed wheat shot from a cannon?" were the first words spoken by a tall, dark, strangely dressed man as he stood in front of more than 2,000 students of Orange High School recently.
Mr. Quaker' was his name, and fitting it was for he was dressed as a Quaker.
Mr. Quaker' did something I've never seen; and I venture to say 95 per cent of my fellow students have never seen. He held the complete, uninterrupted attention of every single person in the audience. Not by telling jokes, although he had some good ones, or doing acrobats, or not even by looking funny. He held the undivided attention of 2,200 students for 42 minutes by speaking on Americanism and devotion to our country. Oh, he had the jokes alright, and the funny looking costume to go with it, but to do what he did in the way he did it, he needed no props.
WON RESPECT
He seemed to win over the respect of everyone right from the beginning, because we could feel that he was sincere in his work. Mr. Quaker wasn't just babbling on about something he got straight from the books and didn't really understand himself. He was speaking from the heart from knowledge, books, experi-
and what we known as common slavery on the other. There is no conclusive proof that people understand what free women leadership means. All of these affects the future of our country and the future of humanity.
Americans Confused
Americans are confused about what our heritage really is, we can maintain a high standard we can acquire things when we don't have now. We are ways quarreling. There are over 300 religious denominations in the world today. All worship one in the same being." All these are statements made by Mr. Quaker. Not by just what he thinks but by proven facts.
He also went on to say, "I quote, "Mans behavior is terminated by his economic circumstances. There will never be a generation in history who will be called upon to do job that you will. But your youths will have to prove to the best generation in America History. There are proven statistics that today no more than 3 per cent of our native youth get into trouble." The leaves 97 per cent, by far larger percentage, to do job that has to be done.
In an interview backstage was found out that Mr. Quer's real name is Val Goehr. He used to be a dramatic actress and singer. He was in Germany.
Health Team Spotlighted
The week has been set aside to salute the members of the community's health team, to focus attention upon the outstanding medical and public health facilities existing here, to alert young people to the wide variety of rewarding opportunities in the medical and health field and to increase public awareness of medical progress.
The chief objective of physicians and other members of the health team throughout the city, county and state is to provide the very best medical care possible and to see that it is available locally. Dr. Plumb said.
WON RESPECT
He seemed to win over the respect of everyone right from the beginning, because we could feel that he was sincere in his work. Mr. Quaker wasn't just babbling on about something he got straight from the books and didn't really understand himself. He was speaking from the heart from knowledge, books, experience, travels but most of all he was speaking on what he feels and believes inside of him is right.
"You have to look at the situation straight in the face to deal with it. Americans are failing in a habit which could be fatal; the threat of Communism. We're divided into two parts: a wall right down the middle. Freedom on one side
