Carpenter Asks Defacing Probe
Paul Carpenter, Democratic nominee for the House of Representatives in the 35th Congressional District, today formally requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate the defacing of Kennedy half-dollars in Orange and San Diego Counties.
Following his request to the FBI, Carpenter publicly offered a reward of $250.00 to the first person who furnishes evidence leading to the arrest and conviction of those guilty of the act.
Carpenter's actions were spurred when he was handed a 1964 Kennedy half-dollar with the word "TRAITOR" stamped across the face of it. The coin was turned over to Carpenter by LeRoy Myers, 1406 West 21st, Santa Ana, retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant, who had received it in change at a downtown Santa Ana drug store.
Carpenter described the act of defacing coins bearing the late President's portrait as an "operational definition" of subversion and extremism. "Besides the fact that defacing any U. S. coin is a federal offense," Carpenter said, "this particular act shows utter contempt for our national institutions and our national leadership. It's an welcomed Sen. He has demonstrated his own popularity and vote-getting ability frequently and dramatically. In 1948 he carried four states and 39 electoral votes as a candidate for the U. S. Presidency. After winning his Senate seat as a write in in 1954, he subsequently resigned the seat to put it to a primary test in 1956. He won without opposition in 1956 and was re-elected in 1960.
His sound fiscal policies made South Carolina the leader among southern states while Thurmond was Governor between 1947 and 1951. He was chairman of the Southern Governors Conference

"I have asked the FBI to investigate thoroughly," Carpenter added, "so that if there is a concerted extremist effort to deface Kennedy half-dollars in our District, it can be nipped in the bud."

Color television may seem fairly new to most of us. But the public actually got its first look at color TV over 35 years ago. The Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York, a pioneer in the field, demonstrated this product of its research to a limited audience on June 27, 1929.
Think up! More people are flying today than ever before. In fact, at any one moment there are as many as 20,000 commercial and military planes in the air over this country. If you travel by air, you've probably noticed the impressive role your telephone plays in travel planning. You usually call up for reservations and flight information first off. Then, you reconfirm or check departure and arrival times by phone, right? But the telephone's importance to flying doesn't stop there—no sireee!
A 350,000 mile Bell System network of telephone and teletypewriter lines—one of the world's fastest communications systems—links together the major air traffic control centers, radar stations, airport towers, weather bureaus, airlines, and military bases throughout the USA to help assure your comfort and safety while flying.
