Rodent Control Keeps Snakes Away From Home
By LOUISE METEER
Feature Editor
If you live in the country and don't like rattlesnakes, keep rodents under control.
This is the word from E. Dudley, assistant commissioner of the Orange County Department of Agriculture, who said that to his knowledge the rattlers are no worse this year than they ever have been.
"In fact," he said, "our people are working in the hill country continuously. They've covered from 35,000 to 40,000 acres and have found no indication of serious snake infestation."
Dudley added that rodent control is up to the individual or the community. There is no rodent control service from the county or the state. Rodents include ground squirrels as well as mice. He agreed that squirrels are running rampant in the hills.
Pound Helps
Orville Mason, poundmaster at the Orange County Animal Shelter said that there have been a few calls for help in destroying rattlers. He has an expert on duty, Senior Officer Robert W. Ohrman.
Ohrman catches rattlers with... believe it or not... a fishing pole. He takes one of those fancy glass poles with a line on it and a wire loop on the end of the line. Keeping at a safe distance from the snake he catches its head in the loop, then shoots the head off with a shotgun.
Plenty for Him
A man who says he's seen more snakes than he cares for, and has killed four his property across from the old Louis Noll place where Villa Park meets the hills in Great Clark Horns were killed in those hills in a short period of time.
Hikers should wear boots, according to the Pound Master, and should carry a snake kit. They should not hike alone.
The best way to get rid of snakes, other than through de-construction of rodents, is to im Black Snakes or King Snakes the rattlers' natural enemy cording to authorities at Fish and Game Commission.
Clark says he'll stick to guns. He doesn't want any snakes, thank you.
What doing?
One of the most dramatic developments in telephoning promises to be the see-as-you-talk phone. We call it "picturephone" service. There's a demonstration hook-up working right now between the Bell System exhibits at Disneyland and the New York World's Fair. And if you're visiting either place, you can give it a try. Although picturephone sets for regular home use are still far in the future, they are already in commercial use on a limited basis between three public locations in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C.

Plenty for Him
A man who says he's seen more snakes than he cares for, and has killed four his property across from the old Louis Noll place where Villa Park meets the hills, is Grant Clark. He reports four killed so far this year right in his yard.
One snake was found coiled in a box with nine newborn puppies.
"It didn't seem to be trying to harm them," he said. "It was just with them."
Dudley, asked for comment on the snake's intentions said dryly, "Just getting ready to eat them."
Clark said that he believes bulldozing of land in the hills is responsible for the increase of snakes in that area.
"I keep three shotguns," he said. "My wife has one in her car, I have one in mine, and one is in the house."
He has shot three and one was destroyed for him by Officer Ohrman from the pound.
According to Poundmaster Mason there have been no more complaints to his office than usual. He has noted an increase in the Santa Ana Canyon area since 1958.
Dudley said that the greatest problem with rattlers seems to come from the Laguna Hills area where no effort has been made for rodent control. He recalls that during WPA days 1000

Smokey the Bear is hard at work again this year reminding everyone to be extra careful with campfires, matches, and smoking during the dry summer months. Let's all help Smokey have a successful year preserving our country's forests.
Here's an important reminder: September 10th is the last day you can register to vote in the general election of November 8.
If I asked you to describe the shape of a telephone manhole cover, chances are you'd say it's round. And you'd be right. But do you know why it's round? Safety is one good reason. No matter how you turn it, a circular lid can't fall into the hole it covers.
And here's a bit of irony: The automobiles which roll over the lids are in many cases getting acquainted with their future. Why? Because, old motor blocks are the most common source of the cast iron used in manufacturing new covers.

County Tax Rate
Headed for Jum
The county tax rate is headed for a boost this year — but the increase will not be as great as anticipated earlier this summer.
County Auditor Victor Heim today revised his original prediction of a 17 cent jump and said it would be about 10 cents.
When a preliminary budget of $86 million was adopted last June, Heim said the present tax rate would jump from $1.66 per $100 assessed valuation to $1.83.
He said this increase would be necessary unless there was a cut in the planned spending program.
The new estimate was based on revised changes in revenues, assessed valuation and carry-over balances not anticipated in June, Heim said.
According to present estimates if supervisors can cut approximately $1.8 million from the proposed record $86 million budget total, the county would be able to hold the line and keep the tax rate at $1.66, or less, for the 8th consecutive year.
Supervisor Alton E. Allen, the board's finance chairman, however was not optimistic about being able to hold the line this year.
Allen, a retired banker, declined to speculate possible budget cuts but sized mounting needs sult of a continuing growth. Construction county buildings and ment of park and re facilities were two of the areas cited.
