CALIFORNIA FEDERAL DID.
Our business is the betterment of people.
The usual "share the wealth" schemes turn out to be miserable failures. But there's one plan that works. Our plan. It helps create prosperity—and some of it rubs off on everyone. Last year, for example, the equivalent of a small city of new homes and apartments was built with $144,000,000 in financing provided by California Federal Savings Association. (That was only the amount loaned for new construction. Our 1963 mortgage lending total exceeded $335,818,000!) These funds gave full-time work and paychecks to 11,000 building and allied industry workers, and to 12,500 other people in businesses and services where construction wages were spent. In addition, this prosperity was shared by 412,000 savers who received $37,000,000 in dividends from their California Federal savings accounts. Directly or indirectly, you shared the good times California Federal helped generate, too. That's why we say the betterment of people is our business. And it's a billion-dollar business.

The Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has discontinued its house-to-house campaign due to high costs involved. Last year, through reducing the neighborhood plan to only a limited residential and neighborhood march, campaign costs were reduced from 24 per cent to 14 per cent.
The emphasis, therefore, to assure adequate funds for the financial support of national and international research; the support of six local M. S. clinics; and to obtain the funds necessary to assist needy M. S. patients this year, will be a stronger appeal to business firms and those individuals who are financially able to assist the Southern California Chapter in its objective to find the cause and cure of M. S., and at the sametime assit needy M. S. patients with treatment through six M. S. clinics, and to provide them with necessary medicines and equipment.
"M. S." is a neurological disease. It mainly involves men and women - young adults between the ages of 20 years and 40 years. This is the age group starting families, buying cars and household furnishings - and then M. S. strikes the father or the mother - and the future plans of the family collapse.
Bleak Outlook
The future for the father or mother, as catastrophic as it may seem, is from cane to crutches to wheel chair to hospital bed. There is no present knowledge of the cause nor cure for M. S.
The annual contributions to M. S. in August are the only hope for finding the cause and cure of M. S. through national and international research; for financally supporting six local M. S. clinics; and for taking care of the medical and therapeutic equipment needs for M.S. patients.
Special Gifts
The Special Gifts Chairman will approach generous gifts during the month of August with the hopes that these contributions will help find the cause and cure of M. S. and eradicate M. S. as a health problem.
Everyone is asked to give generously to M. S. in August which is designated as "Conquer M. S. month."
Additional information on literature about multiple sclerosis is available at the M. Chapter, 622 South Kenmore Avenue, Los Angeles 5th through DU 8-0461.

Atomic Power: just plug
The big news of Southern California Edison's plans for an $87 million plant at Camp Pendleton (see above) seemed to bring the all-time step closer. Early in 1967 several hundred thousand Edison Southland will be "plugged in" on low-cost atom-produced electricity important gain in the continuing drive of the investor-owner keep well ahead of America's needs for abundant power at the Echo Park, Granada Hills, Wood, Los Angeles (down-Verdes Peninsula, Pasadena, headquarters office: 611 Wil-)

Answers to key questions about the investor-owned electric utility industry and the all-electric future
WHAT'S IN THE ATOM FOR ME?
Plenty. The mighty atom is one of today's most promising sources of the low-cost power that will make your future brighter, better, safer, more productive and much more pleasant.
WHO WAS FIRST? Edison was the first electric company in America to produce electricity commercially with atomic power from a non-military reactor.
It might surprise you to know that since way back in 1957 Edison has actually been producing power with the help of the atom at its Santa Susana experimental generating plant! So it's an eye-opening fact that some Southern California homes have already been popping toast, cooking the roast, and heating the house with clean, flameless atom-produced electricity.
The investor-owned electric companies like Edison have been moving steadily ahead with plans and plants to produce electricity with the help of nuclear fission.
This map shows the location of 25 projects involving 125 of the nation's investor-owned light and power companies.

WHY IS EDISON CONCENTRATING ON THE ATOM? The main reason Edison and other investor-owned electric companies are so interested in the atom is that it holds the promise of almost limitless low-cost electric power.
Another reason for concentrating on the little atom is this: While America has abundant supplies of fossil fuels now (coal, oil, gas) to use in electric generating plants, these fuels are not inexhaustible, and eventually will have to be replaced.
And while we are talking about the never-ending search for sources of low-cost power, let's take a look at how well the investor-owned industry has been doing at keeping down the costs of electricity.
AVERAGE PRICE PER KWHR OF RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICITY
Through increased efficiencies, and the wide acceptance of electric living, the electric utility companies have been able to keep the cost of electricity trending downward! The chart above shows the average (national) price per kilowatt-hour of electricity for residential customers from 1913 to 1960.
Here in Central and Southern California, the record has been outstanding. The average cost of a kilowatt-hour of electricity to Edison residential customers is 28% lower today than it was in 1939.
