2—The Gazette O.C.M.A. WARNING Glass Doors: Unseen "A father rushed into an Orange hospital emergency room carrying a small child. The little girl in his arms was bleeding profusely from lacerations received when she backed through a sliding glass door at her home while playing with other children." "The attending physician discovered that the little girl had severe arterial bleeding in her left thigh and would need immediate surgery. In surgery, three physicians worked on the child from 9 p.m. until 2 a.m., during which time it was found that she had taken approximately a six-inch slice out of the femoral artery — not severing it in half, but simply dissecting it longitudinally for a length of six inches." Dr. Hugh J. Plumb, Jr., Orange County Medical Association President, in relating this story, said it was the beginning of one of many tragedies that result from injuries and deaths caused by glass doors in Orange County. "In the case of the little girl," Dr. Plumb continued, "arterial grafts were rushed by the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol to the hospital to try to save her life. Many blood transfusions were performed, but the child died in the surgery room in spite of every human effort and the finest of surgical skill. Injuries On Increase caused to persons going from inside to outside of the building and, also, that hurrying was more a contributor than slipping or crowding, it is apparent that necessary warning such as de-cals, crossbars or drapes must be installed to prevent such injures," Dr. Plumb said. The reunion will be a dinner at the Charter House at 6:30 p.m. George F. Kohlenberger, chairman of the event, believes that there are about 20 of the 62 former students who live in Orange. He has asked the Orange Daily News to spread the word so that they will come forward and be counted. One former member of the class is Mrs. William Brun who lives at 394 S. Orange St. this city. Many blood transfusions were performed, but the child died in the surgery room in spite of every human effort and the finest of surgical skill. Injuries On Increase In describing the above incident, the medical association president stated that glass panel injuries are increasing at such an alarming rate that the physicians of Orange County have decided to take some action in an attempt to prevent such tragic accidents and deaths. According to Dr. Plumb, "The greatest period of such injuries occurs during the summer from June to September and over one-third of the injuries are in the age group of five to fourteen years of age. Also, sixty-eight per cent of the injuries are in males and seventy-four per cent of such injuries occur at home." Recently the Orange County Medical Association, according to the doctor, adopted a statement of the hazards of large panel rolled glass in modern homes and the critically unsafe conditions created by such installations. Association Issues Warning The association members, in their statement, have issued a warning that such accidents and deaths will continue unless parents install warning devices or protective bars on every glass door and panel in their homes. When panels of rolled glass are replaced, they should be replaced with tempered and laminated panels, thus avoiding shattering effect of rolled glass. "Since seventy-four per cent of the accident injuries are When Anaheim High School's Ray Johnson to Open Campaign Headquarters Orange County citrus growers are utilizing baiting machines in their battle with gophers, according to University of California Farm Advisor J. E. Pehrson. This machine permits a grower to cover substantial acreages at a minimum cost in the control of his gopher problem, the citrus man states. Pehrson explained the machine as a device consisting of a burrow maker at the end of a subsoil shank to which is attached a bait dispensing unit. The whole business attaches to a tractor which is then driven down the tree row middle distributing poison bait in a man made tunnel. The tunnel cuts across gopher runways or is intercepted by a gopher digging into it. Gophers are curious animals and when they find this new tunnel they begin exploring, find the bait, and the poison does the rest. Gophers are undesirable citrus orchards because they will feed on the orange tree bark below ground damage the vital functions carried just beneath the wood in the cambium layer, Pehrson plains. This past spring gopher populations rose as high as 20 dents per acre before so growers could successfully ahead of them. The absence effective predators, such as wild animals that used to roam back country, is one of the reasons we have the pressure from gophers in our orchards, citrus man suggests. The farmers have to make for this absence of predation Convenient Method The operation of the gopher baiting machine is a convenient way for the grower to do a large scale job of control. The Orange Lady Winnie Praise for Works Mrs. Artha Wilber of 600 Marland Dr., Orange, has been attracting special attention for the art work she executes for the Anaheim central public library. A large display case pointing up the World's Fair, a bulletin board display in the magazine section, which changes it subject to promote various library books, and a children's section display which often includes 3-dimensional animals are Mrs. Wilber's responsibility. Mrs. Wilber is a graduate of St. John's Lutheran School, Orange High School and San Jose State college. She entered the field of interior decoration for a time, then became a part-time clerk in the children's section that, according to Assistant Library Director Phyllis Irastit, it was decided a full-time role was needed to promote displays. Brainstorming sessions by librarians are held every month to work out new themes which are then coordinated all aspects of the library. Mrs. Wilber believes thatlor is such an important that entire color scheme the library have been changed to meet her approval. She with different color throughout the building to which will hold up and not display usually are chosen each month. Featuring food, refreshments, beauty queens, and candidates, the new offices will be open at 10 a.m. and remain open for a Saturday night party of dancing and entertainment. The headquarters are located at 845 N. Broadway in Santa Ana. The "Bipartisan Committee for Ray Johnson" and the "Your Next Assemblyman Ray Johnson Committee" will be located at the new center. "Al good Americans — Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike — who are opposed to the John Birch Society are cordially invited to attend the open house and to make the headquarters their home for the duration of the campaign." Johnson, candidate for the 71st assembly district, declared. There will be a formal dedication of the new Ray Johnson "Votes-Wagon" at 5 p.m. during the open house, according to campaign special assistant Owen Gallogly. "The 'Votes-Wagon' is a van truck which will be used extensively during the campaign to rally the voters of Orange County against the extremist elements in the area," Gallogly stated. Unseen Killers Crossbars or drapes must be called to prevent such incidents. Dr. Plumb said. Orange County Medical Association will actively support county or city agency such as building officials in making changes in building codes that will require all reasonable safeguards designed to reduce 'glass door accidents' to a minimum," Dr. Plumb continued. "Nothing is more tragic for a physician than to see such senseless accidents which often result in death of young children and, in some cases, mothers or fathers of children." Sugar was 45 cents for 100 pounds and things were humming, with prophesies of a building boom to come. They were even planning street cars for the downtown area. No Transient Kohlenberger still lives at 314 N. Philadelphia, the house where he was born. He hopes that Dr. Martin Leuschner, who was valedictorian of that class 43 years ago, will make a trip from Chicago to attend the reunion. He is now editor-in-chief of the North American Baptist Conference. Jessie Coon, older sister of former Anaheim mayor Rex Coons, now Mrs. Ralph Seward, is expected to come from Yucca Valley. A popular teacher who is expected to attend the reunion is Mrs. Dorothy Sutherland. Other faculty members in 1921 who will attend the reunion are L. P. Nichols, 420 N. Janss St., who taught history; and George Hedstrom, 1747 S. Heather Lane, who taught chemistry. Bond Sales On Upswing In County Orange County Savings Bank Chairman, George A. Palmer today released results of national poll on Savings Bonds purchasers and the latest figures for this County. For Southern California, for the first half of 1964, $519,208, compared to $464 for the same month last year for the County. Total Series E and Hings Bonds sales for the year date for this County amount to $4,169,062. June sales are $99,556,796 a percentage change of -1.0 for the same period year ago. June figure for eleven Southern Counties is $14,418,249 as compared to $314,853, for the same month 1963. The nationwide survey shows two major points of inform—reasons for selecting Savings Bonds as a method of saving and specific purposes for bond buyers save," said Chairman. "Through the cooperative banks and other issuing cies, the study was made a point of purchase after being impulse had become buying tion. "'Safety of investment,' patriotism' ranked highest more than 20,000 responded reason for buying Savings Bonds, followed by 'convenience and liquidity'. "Creation of emergency ings, preparation for ment, and education of dren are reasons which allow for eight out of ten Savings Bonds purchased according the survey." Citrus Growers Gopher Problem does the rest. others are undesirable in orchards because they need on the orange tree's below ground damaging initial functions carried on beneath the wood in the medium layer, Pehrson exisnt past spring gopher popusions rose as high as 20 rods per acre before some farmers could successfully get rid of them. The farmers have to make up this absence of predation. Convenient Method the operation of the gophering machine is a convenient for the grower to do a large job of control. The bait being used is strychnine treated barley at the rate of one pound per acre. This baiting operation is a simple one, however, not completely trouble free. Experience in some of the coarse textured soils has pointed out the necessity of having sufficient moisture in the ground to permit the machine to be pulled through the soil and build a satisfactory artificial burrow. However, it is considerably more effective to use the machine even where the tunnel may be iteratively collapsed than to try and do the entire job with traps and hand baiting. Pehrson believes. For a few pennies the grower can save the worth many of dollars. Presented under auspices of Orange County Performing Arts Foundation ONE NIGHT ONLY Monday, Aug. 10 at 8:30 P.M. IN PERSON!
