Annual Scholarship Funds Established
John H. Rousselot, National Director of Public Relations of the John Birch Society, announced on behalf of the Society the formation of the Manning Johnson Scholarship Fund and Committee which will provide an annual scholarship award of one thousand dollars for a deserving Negro student, boy or girl, prepared to enter college each year. The first award will be made in September, 1964.
The newly established Committee in charge of selecting the students to be awarded this scholarship and/or scholarships will be made up of Mrs. Julia Brown, Cleveland, Ohio, a Negro lecturer and one-time undercover agent for the FBI operating in the Communist Party; the Reverend J. L. Ward of Me-Reverend J. L. Ward of Memphis, Tennessee, a highly regarded Negro minister and founder of the Prince of Peace Movement; and the Hon. John H. Rousselot as chairman.
The Fund and Scholarship was named after Manning Johnson, a great American patriot and author of the book "Color, Communism, and Common Sense," a book which he allowed to be published after he had defected from the hierarchy of the Communist Party, and in which he tried to expose the Communist hands behind most of the "Civil Rights" agitation now tearing our country apart.
Following his defection from the Communist Party, Manning Johnson devoted the remainder of his lifetime to waking up the American people as to the internal threat of the Communist Party in this country.
"The John Birch Society felt that this would be a more positive and living memorial to a fine American than any appropriate plaque for Mannig Johnson's grave," according to Rousselot.
The scholarship will be awarded each year by the above-mentioned Committee and will be available to Negro students toward the expenses of a college career.

RARA AVIS
A "rare" bird indeed is this emblem we so proudly display. Of the hundreds of Savings and Loan Associations in California, only a relative few can refer to themselves as Federal associations. We are particularly proud to be among them. For there is much more involved than merely a name, or the right to display the Federal symbol. Our Federal charter means that we are mutually owned...that we are responsible to you, our account holders. It also means that we are closely supervised by the United States government...that our earnings must go first into reserves for account holders. And it means that our management has willingly assumed the legal and moral responsibilities which come with the granting of a Federal charter. All of these things.

And it means that our management has willingly assumed the legal and moral responsibilities which come with the granting of a Federal charter. All of these things...our name, our reputation, our sense of obligation to you and to the community...are embodied in this rare "Sign of the Eagle," which boldly proclaims that we are a Federal Savings and Loan Association. Maximum protection, confidence, and safety for your funds; that's what saving with our Federal association means to you. We invite you to open your insured account now.
