Park - Recreation Notes The Anaheim City Council t week named 18 city parks with the assistance of the Park and Recreation Commission, the department, staff, and the able and sometimes whimsical — vice of the city's third gradturning to third graders for stance was no random acn. As a group they probably now more about Anaheim than any other since they actively dry the city's history in class. Iir recommendations were specifically to name community parks. City policy specifies that neighborhood parks adjacent to schools be named after the school. Seven parks fit that category: Peter Marshall, John Marshall, Clara Barton, Palm Gene, Edison, Lincoln, and Dr. bert Schweitzer parks, all adent to schools of the same one. Policy also states n neighbord parks not adjacent to schools be named for native or nativeous plants. Willow Park Crone and Loara, Sage Park Loara and North, Manzanita k near Harbor and the Riside Freeway, Chaparral k near Broadway and Euland, Ponderosa Park at Orange od and Haster, and Poinciana k between Cerritos and Kaa on 9th Street, all fell in category. Community parks are named significant leaders and ants in Anaheim history, redless of proximity to schools. But 1,000 third graders gave ice. Amazingly, their varia- Vermont and State College site was named Rudy Boysen Park. Mother Colony Park had a heavy following, but the Department staff sided with a dozen third graders for "Pioneer Park at the Sunkist and Underhill location. The staff said the name fit the requirements and the parks planned "old west" play area without causing confusion with the Mother Colony House. Third graders reasons, summarized by Danny Jimenez, were simply: "There wouldn't be any Anaheim without Pineers." The Council also adopted the name Twila Reid Park for the site adjacent to Reid School in the Savanna school district. Some of the eight-year olds weren't in the "mainstream of thinking, but still produced some provocative, thoughtful and amusing moments, along with several worthy suggestions for future parks, for the Commis-sioners and Council members.
