AND WHEN YOU LOOK INSIDE FEATURES.....Page 3 WOMEN'S NEWS.....PAGE 2 Volume 9, No. 94 SAVE THE TREES — This giant fig tree at 1557 Mable at the Fairmont School was saved from destruction by the action taken by the City Council. Councilmen were unanimous in their decision to "Save the tree." City Council Saves Tree Many trees die naturally but man can rip them out in one day and clear away what it has taken nature decades to grow. Such is the plight of trees in Anaheim — the weight of life and death hangs with the location of the tree and an architect or builder's consideration of the most utilitarian use of the land destined for the progress that so inevitably comes. The City Council last week saved the ancient fig tree located at 1557 West Mable St. (Fairmont School) by granting a temporary waiver for installation of a sidewalk to Kenneth W. Holt. The curb and sidewalk are missing in order that the giant tree may survive. The council unanimously agreed that they must "save the tree" in granting the waiver. A similar fight for the life of a large rubber tree located at Manchester and Lincoln Aves. has been going on for some time. The owners of the land wish to remove the massive tree to build a Texaco Service Station. This past week eucalyptus trees on East Cerritos Ave. East of Anaheim Blvd. were the victims of progress in the expansion plans of the Buzza-Cardozo Card Company. Planning Commission Dan Rowland is leading the fight to save the camphor trees at Claudina and South Sts. The trees are being removed because they are damaging the sidewalks and creating curbing hazards. All action to save any trees in Anaheim will have to come from private citizens appealing to the City Council, according to the Street Maintenance Department. Hanna Urges New Guide Line Congressman Richard T. Hanna today appealed to Postmaster General John A. Gronousy to place the Anaheim Post Office on the list of some 50 post offices throughout the United States where the individual measurement in the Work Measurement System is to be suspended on an experimental basis. This "guide line" system has been the center of much controversy and recently the department indicated a willingness to suspend the system in post offices, Hanna said. Murdoch said the 20-per-cent boost in the proposed budget was caused by "new programs" financed by other sources of revenue. Excluding these, he said for "comparative purposes" the budget is 10.6 per cent higher than this fiscal year's $20.68 million. New revenues will be obtained from the newly authorized additional gas tax; cash payment from "room tax" revenues to start construction of the convention hall; and revenue and expenditures due to the acquisition of a portion of the Dyke Water Co. system. Nearly half of the city's budget — 48.59 per cent — will be financed with revenues from the water and power division, with the other large source properly taxed. 12.46 per cent while PUBLIC LIBRARY Mayor Rex Coons (left) and being made on the preliminaries heads the newly-formed Dodger Rookies to Play Here A forty-four game schedule starting July 3 and continuing through August 31 has been set for the 1964 edition of the Los Angeles Dodgers' Rookie team, according to Director of Scouting Al Campanis.
