At the time he announced retirement last fall, he vowed to stay out of the picture and keep the primary open and free. "I think it is only fair that I not endorse anyone," Murdy said. The solon said he was making this clear now due to a number of complaints from the county concerning false reports that he was supporting one of the so-called conservative candidates. "I have not, did not and will not endorse anyone for the primary election June 2," Murdy said. Obviously annoyed by the misrepresentation, the senator said he had spent a considerable amount of his valuable time trying to track down the false endorsement report and who was making it. He said it was localized to one conservative candidate but refused to get involved in personalities. The senator is in Sacramento, the state capitol, for the current budget and special session. The legislature has been deadlocked over the budget and other issues for several weeks but it appears a compromse has been reached between GOP and Democratic leaders over the budget and Murdy expects the session to wind up this weekend. Badham (R), Newport Beach, today dispelled rumors that he would endorse any candidate for the June 2nd primary. "Various candidates have claimed that I am endorsing or supporting them," Badham said, "and such is just not the case. I believe in a free and open primary and will remain entirely neutral. Reports that I will speak at a testimonial dinner for one of the candidates are gross misrepresentation." George Murphy, leading Republican candidate for United States Senate, has announced the appointment of three key Orange County chairmen to direct his county campaign committee. The newly appointed campaign directors immediately disclosed plans to open local headquarters and announced an all-day "George Murphy Day in Orange County" scheduled for tomorrow, May 28. Walter Schmid of Garden Grove, prominent Orange County rancher and civic leader, was named campaign chairman and Andy Devine of Newport Beach, well-known entertainer, was named co-chairman. Mrs. Ronald D. Rankin of La Habra, active Republican leader, was appointed campaign co-ordinator. Democratic United States Senatorial Candidate George McLain today called for enlargement of the Long Beach Naval Hospital "before building starts — not after." Ground for the 350-bed facility was broken April 30. “What we need is at least a 600-bed hospital to serve the more than 50,000 active duties Armed Services personnel who are right here in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area within 30 miles of the hospital site,” McLain said. “Not only are all the members of all the Armed Services in the area involved in these hospitalization needs, but the dependents of these men and women also must be taken care of.” McLain characterized as an "absurdity" the action of the United States Senate in insisting that only 350 beds be set up for the third largest Naval base in the country and the only major concentration of personnel in the U.S. Navy without a hospital. Joseph A. O'Connor, Conservative Republican candidate for the 34th Congressional District, today ridiculed the idea that the quality of education in this country can be solved by merely appropriating very large sums of money for the building of bigger and more elaborate facilities. He pointed out how interesting it is to note how the demands for federal aid to education have grown as the need for expanding our school facilities diminishes.
