Eisenhower Reveals Views on Politics
(Continued from Page 1)
to maintain warm, cordial relations based on mutual respect and trust.
Mr. Eisenhower believes our taxes are far too high, that more and more deficit financing will lead to even more inflation and that estate and death taxes are grossly unfair in their large and staggering levies.
In this connection he mentioned that the dollar earned and saved 24 years ago is now worth just 45 cents. This drop in purchasing power hits heavily and hard holders of pensions, savings, and insurance policies.
Discussing politics generally, and the Republican position specifically, Mr. Eisenhower stressed the need for a united party. He said that Democratic registrations now outnumber GOP ones by something like 12 million nationally. This makes the Republican party a minority one. A GOP presidential nominee to win must secure most of the 25 percent of independent voters who tend more and more to vote for the candidate and not a party label. Ike was highly successful in appealing to this vital 25 percent of our voters.
He hopes that the GOP high command has followed most of the recommendations made by Ray Bliss, the successful party leader in Ohio, as how his party can best appeal to voters in metropolitan and industrial areas.
The basis of this winning formula, of course, is good candidates and issues plus much doorbell ringing, millions of telephone calls and licking of postage stamps not just two months before an election, but every month, every year. This may apply to a few Republican operations, but it is the exception rather than the rule.

Mr. Eisenhower on doctor's orders plays golf three times each week. His long game is especially good but at the moment putts are giving him trouble. He is one of the sharpest and smartest dressers at Eldorado, a gorgeous desert golf club in Palm Desert he has helped make world famous.
He technically is supposed to be retired, but this is a myth.
Since coming here in last December he has written most of his second book on the White House years, numerous magazine articles, and most of the top Republican and Democratic politicians and visiting statesmen from abroad have visited him at his Eldorado home. Presidents Kennedy and Johnson have called on him this season and last year.
He has headed up a drive to secure funds to build an enlarged Community Church in Palm Desert, visited schools and juvenile camps in the

The former President hopes that his frequent articles in national magazines, newspaper, radio and TV interviews, public talks and numerous conferences with various groups and organizations will spell out his observations and conclusions based on his half century of military and civilian service to this country at home and abroad.
He feels he has the trust and confidence of many Americans and for this reason, among others, he is careful not to make sweeping charges or engage in controversy to try and impress some columnists and commentators.
I asked him what some of his biggest decisions were while in the White House. During the war he made many, and six of them are summed up brilliantly by Walter Bedell Smith in his "Eisenhower's Six Great Decisions, Europe 1944-1945."

Quite a busy 20 days, indeed. Of all these issues, the national election probably was the least important. The other issues all involved peace with honor or war.

No one really knows the pressures, the decisions and the loneliness of the Presidency until he has served as Chief Executive. Three months after President Kennedy was elected, he told me it looked vastly different from the inside than the outside looking in." He did not say so, but I got the impression that Mr. Kennedy added that had he known in the campaign what he did 90 days after going to the White House he would not have said some of the things he did.
President Eisenhower received me and my Canadian-American friend, James Gilchrist, at the Odium-Cochran Ranch at the outskirts of Indio where he maintains an office. It is a small, simple office with etchings and paintings on the walls. The General looked extremely fit for his 73 years with his carriage as erect as the days when he attended West Point. He was wearing a dark blue suit and a matching blue tie with white dots. Some red roses were on a corner of the modest desk.
It has been a busy morning, as is usual for Mr. Eisenhower. At 7:30 he had a visit from his doctor who checked his blood as to its thickness and thinness and his heart and blood pressure. Ever since his strokes while President and his attack of Ileitis this has been standard procedure every two weeks.
Then came appointments with Felix Blair of the New York Times, Ken Crawford of Newsweek, the President of the

PRIMARY ELECTION COMING
On June 2, 1964 we will hold the Primary Election here in Orange County. Historically, almost 40 per cent of the registered voters do not choose to vote on this date. This letter is written with the hope that we can motivate all of the registered voters to take advantage of this great right which we cherish so clearly under our democratic system.
Because we enjoy the free enterprise system in the United States we should endeavor to explain what it means. Basically, the free enterprise system means freedom of the individual. The individual is free to make something of himself if he has the enterprise to do it. Too many people put too much emphasis on "free" and too little emphasis on "enterprise".
The difference between a free nation and a slave nation can be very simply stated. The legislature is now processing bills to aid the stricken city of Crescent City, Calif., which was struck by a small, but mighty tidal wave following the disasterous Alaskan earthquake on March 27.
The bills will provide tax relief for those who suffered great losses and also provide loans and assistance to the Crescent City redevelopment agency in the amount of about $1 million. The federal government is also assisting.
Seismic sea waves generated by earthquakes are of great concern to us here in California. Not only must we watch for seismic waves from earthquakes that strike the Pacific area but we must also consider our own earthquake problem.
You have been reading in the news media of late that Southern California is due for another major earthquake, possibly as severe as the one that shook Alaska last month.
And we feel the warnings are justified. A severe quake could cause serious damage, loss of life and injury to our citizens:
Then what of the seismic tidal wave that follows? Seismic waves usually follow only those quakes that occur offshore. This may be more horrible in devastation than we would like to think, it is quite vulgar offshore earth our area could generate mic tidal wave from that could sweep in considerable distance West Orange County tween Long Beach and Beach. The other communities would also age but the coastal probably block the water further inland south port Beach, except for istrano area. Fortune apparently are no more in the offshore area.
But there is a pottererous earthquake that exists today County. Don't say warn you. Some day happen. Be prepared.

Consider for a moment what happened in Alaska and other areas in recent years. In the Alaskan quake, the waves swept inland with great fury destroying nearly everything in the path, including the port facilities at Anchorage, Valdez, and Seward. The center of the quake was off shore.
Eight hours later, the wave hit Crescent City, California, causing millions of dollars of damage and killing 11 persons.

As I
See It
There are many political and international reporters, analysts, and critics who comment daily on the national and international scene. Thank goodness most of them are not active in government. I also hope for their own sake and personal well-being they stay away from Las Vegas and Monte Carlo because they simply haven't learned that a well-run "house" always has an ample supply of new dice and cards on hand for those who want to break the bank.
A short while ago, these reporters, analysts and critics, almost all proclaimed in universal panic: "Cuba Cuts off Our Water." I'd like to correct them, as our government has by changing that to read: "Cuba cuts off HER water."
In the eyes of the world, we're still a young nation. We know that if they're not laughing loudly in our face they are snickering behind our back. They consider us poor politicians and crude statesmen. Subconsciously though, all they are trying to do is to convince themselves that we're still neophyte gamblers with beginner's luck. However, they also know even better than we do that international politics and statesmanship is a game — a gambler's game — and that we have a hand stronger than any they ever had — or imagined possible. So strong, in fact, that they would have no idea at all of how to play it.
To add to our hand, we're this hand doesn't just consist of four ordinary aces and a wild card. Rather, it is one the world has never had in such perfect combination. Our four aces are unbeatable and called the Four Freedoms. Our wild card, the one that beats everything and anything, the one that we pray for is God and our universal faith in Him — the faith that founded us and that which brought forth leaders and miracles when we had nothing. And that will sustain us now that we have almost everything.
We keep being fed the paradox that this or that nation possesses the wisdom of the ages much superior to ours. That this or that nation are acknowledge superior industrial genius. That this or that nation is harder than ours, more disciplined than ours, suverior than ours more artistic than ours, more cultural than ours. Yes, ever more dedicated than ours.
line, it is quite vulnerable. A major offshore earthquake in our area could generate a seismic wave from the ocean that could sweep inland for a considerable distance in the West Orange County area between Long Beach and Newport Beach. The other coastal communities would also suffer damage but the coastal hills would probably block the wave's intrusion further inland south of Newport Beach, except for the Capistrano area. Fortunately, there apparently are no major faults in the offshore area.
But there is a potentially dangerous earthquake condition that exists today in Orange County. Don't say we didn't warn you. Some day it might happen. Be prepared.
LAW IN ACTION
FAMILY DOLLARS
How much is your wife worth? It depends on things you usually don't pin down. But if there is wrongful injury to your wife, a court can only award you dollars for your wife's loss.
At early Roman and English law, the husband was the head of the house, and his wife was his servant. He had a property right in her. Anyone who interfered with his "property" might have to pay the husband for his losses.
The wife had no corresponding right. But all the same, she may sue and recover for any monetary losses brought on by her husband's injury just as he can. Each can sue for loss of earnings, the value of services lost, and the like.
But under the law a wife also has some "non-economic value." At common law a husband can recover financially.
We keep being fed the paradox that this or that nation possesses the wisdom of the age much superior to ours. That truth or that nation are acknowledged superior industrial genius. That this or that nation is harder than ours, more disciplined than ours, suaver than ours more artistic than ours, more cultural than ours. Yes, ever more dedicated than ours.
Yet, a very young American boy settled this paradox for me by asking not too long ago when after being exposed for something to the above, I had to explain to him after he saw "CARE" commercial while "CARE" was. The perfect swer came when he exclaimed "Gee, with all they got, how come they ain't doin' so good!"
I guess another reason "the ain't doing so good" is that no one of them use a platform for table, like we do. At least now that will hold as many players (voters to us). There will again be a lot of room at that table this election year. Why do you sit in and give GOD a hand?

But under the law a wife also has some "non-economic value." At common law a husband can recover financially for the loss of his wife's "consortium," but the wife may not. Under the common law of old England, consortium was the companionship and other sentimental aspects of marriage upon which the court could not place a money value.
