The district manager explained that Edison will award six four-year scholarships to outstanding students either living in or attending school in its service territory. One scholarship valued at $4,000 is awarded in each of the electric company’s six geographic divisions, he said. This means that one of the students in this division will receive $1,000 per year for four regular academic years at their choice of 15 participating private colleges and universities. In addition, the college attended by each winner receives a direct grant of $750 per year for the four academic years, the Edison official said. The ten scholars named semi-finalists for this division will be interviewed by a panel of leading educators and citizens of this area on Saturday, April 11. Three will be named winners of "Edison Gold Awards for Scholastic Achievement" and awarded suitably engraved wall plaques. They will continue into the finals of the Edison competition, and the scholarship winner will be named by another panel of civic and educational leaders following personal interviews on April 21. The elite students winning a place in the semi-finals from this division were selected on the basis of their score on the scholastic Aptitude Test of the College Entrance Examination Board and their scholastic record in high school.
