Nurse Shortage Said Limited By DAVE DISTEL A reported nursing shortage in Orange County appeared today to exist only in a specialized area. St. Jude's Hospital in Fullerton reported a shortage of nurses has made it impossible to open its intensive care unit. St. Jude's officials said the unit has been ready for operation since last June. Officials explained that the intensive care unit, a recent hospital care development, is designed to care for critically ill patients who need constant attention. St. Jude's officials claim the special unit is actually a hospital within a hospital. 24-Hour Staffing To staff the unit, it requires a minimum of one registered nurse and at least one licensed vocational nurse. The unit must be staffed 24 hours a day. Because of the special training needed to staff a unit like this, St. Jude's has had trouble finding enough personnel to handle the unit on an around-the-clock basis. St. Jude's officials said several nurses have been trained for work with the unit. These nurses are serving regular duty while the hospital seeks more specialists. Officials said they can't take any nurses off the floor without causing more shortages. Marshall Ause, administrator of the Orange County General Hospital on his staff usually are vacant, but mainly because of turnover. Labor Market Tight "The labor market in this field is tight," he admitted. "But we haven't had to close floors or curtail services." He said he believes the problem at St. Jude's is caused by the fact that intensive care units have been developed recently; not allowing much time for training of qualified personnel. Sister Brendan of St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange said she isn't aware of any nurse shortage at her facility. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has agreed to enter negotiation with Lear Siegler Electronic Instrumentation Division, Anheim, for the installation of new technical systems and modernization of present systems at the east test area of the Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville, Alabama. The installation and modernization of the technical system will be a continuation and expansion of work being carried out by Lear Siegler under an existing contract. The cost of the work is expected to exceed $4,000,000. Hannah explained, with the contract expected to be completed in months. The additional work calls for Lear Siegler to design the systems installation and check-off equipment and instrumentation. These technical systems include the electronic instrumentation and equipment, that is used for controlling tests on Saturn launch vehicles. Failure For nearly 30 years the U.S. Government has tried to reduce farm output to certain levels and has failed. For more than 40 years the Russian government has tried to raise farm output to certain goals, and has failed. Before long someone may correctly conclude that governments can't farm. St. Jude's officials said several nurses have been trained for work with the unit. These nurses are serving regular duty while the hospital seeks more specialists. Officials said they can't take any nurses off the floor without causing more shortages. Marshall Ause, administrator of the Orange County General Hospital, said his hospital has no nurse shortage problems.
