SANTA ANA — "The outlook for sports at Santa Ana College looks very poor," stated resigned head football coach Myrel Moore after the news that he would go to the University of California was made public Wednesday.
Moore resigned from his one year old job as head grid coach at Santa Ana on Jan. 8. Since then it has been rumored that he would go to Los Angeles State, the University of California at Davis as well as the post that he will take next fall at Berkeley.
He told the Gazette a "lackadaisical attitude redistricting" was one reason why he chose SAC.

Chapman Streak Ends
At Hands of Pacific
Chapman's idea of a relaxing Saturday evening in no way involves the city of Seattle, Wash.
Coach Don Livingston's Panthers invaded Seattle Pacific Saturday night and were greeted by a screaming homecoming crowd of 3,000, an end to their five game winning streak and an injury to forward Bob Einstein.
Seattle Pacific dealt the Panthers their ninth loss against seven wins by an 87-58 score. Friday night in the state of Washington wasn't so bad as Chapman humbled St. Martin's 88-82 in overtime.
It was an expensive weekend for the Panthers as they suffered two injuries. Einstein broke his nose in the first period Friday night.
Seattle Pacific roared into a 41-25 halftime lead and coasted away with the win against Chapman. The Panthers completely reversed the form that had carried them to five straight wins.

Anderson, Winters Boost Don Cagers
SANTA ANA — Santa Ana College basketball coach Bob Wilhelm has two good reasons to be glad the new semester has started.
His reasons are named Phil Anderson and George Winters. Both are promising cagers who joined the Don hardcourters when the new semester started Monday.
Anderson, a freshman, is a transfer from the University of Wichita where he was averaging 12 points per game for the freshman team.
While at Laguna Beach, Anderson teamed with Don center John Pitts to lead the Artists to a CIF championship in 1961.
Anderson's decision to return to the coast came at an opportune time for Santa Ana. Just last week the Dons lost starting forward Jim Broomell for the season due to a broken hand. At 6-2½, Anderson can play both guard and forward.

Moore Hits 'Lackac
He told the Gazette that a "lackadaisical attitude about redistricting" was one of the reasons why he chose to leave SAC.
"There seems to be a less and less chance that we will get to draw from Garden Grove. With Orange being the only city put in our district, the outlook for sports at Santa Ana College looks very poor," explained Moore.
Moore said the main reason for his resigning was because he saw a possibility of his getting the Berkeley job.
At Cal, he will be assistant to new head football coach Ray Willsey. Moore will tutor the Bear backs and defensive ends. He will have no other duties at the university.
Willsey, a one time quarterback at Santa Ana College, was named head coach at California just prior to Moore's announced resignation.
Reportedly Moore pressed interest in coaching posts — the city of California at Los Angeles State. Bear coach confirms former Don coach Hy had offered him.

Julio Mendez, star forward-for Leroy Stevens' high flying Western Pioneers, again took the lead in the city scoring race by maintaining a 18.6 scoring average.
Competition is still close, however, as both Bob Pingerm and Bill Halligan of Servite kept up with a 18.3 average for .3 gap.
Because starting times of the four leagues varied this year the winner of the city scoring title will have to be decided on the average and number of games played which vary from Servite's four to Loara's nine. The winner will have to have played 12 contests.

Winternationals Add New Catagory
A new title — Factory Stock Eliminator — will be added to United States auto competition during the Winternationals Championship Drag Races at Pomona, Calif., Feb. 14-16, according to Wally Parks, president of the sponsoring National Hot Rod Assn.
It will be awarded to the car and driver eliminating all competition in the FX class (limited factory production cars with special performance options). First prize for the new title holder will be a 1964 Dodge 440 coupe donated by Hurst Performance Products Co.
The class was created by the NHRA a year ago with three divisions (A, B, and C based on a weight to horsepower formula) to accommodate factories developing new equipment for future assembly line production, Park said.
He pointed out that the class provides the most spectacular racing of all stock car types with the exception of super stock. Current A-FX record is held by Arlen Vanke of Akron, O., in a '63 Pontiac with an elapsed time for the quarter mile straightway of 11.89 seconds and top speed of 123.28.
Parks revealed that the Pomona races will feature the first national competition between 1964 FX cars this year.
A total of 3,000 hot rodders and 500 cars ranging from 1,000 horsepower dragsters to tiny engines -- applicants now and may receive a few more before the Saturday deadline.
"You read where one paper has all but named Dick Hill and another paper has named someone else for us," Dr. Johnson said. "But for all we know, the new head coach hasn't even applied yet. For example, what if the USC coach should send in an application?"
Trying to learn anything about the head coaching situation at Santa Ana is like trying to shake hands with an octopus. Everyone seems to be going in different directions.
I talked with one official who said the Board of Education would be presented with a list of five names from which it would select the new Santa Ana head coach.
This appears to be a departure from the ordinary. Usually the Board of Education would ask for a recommendation from the college's athletic department and okay or reject the recommendation.
Usually the athletic department is expected to know a bit more about sports and coaches than a Board of Education.
Just a few minutes later I talked with a high ranking athletic official at the college who said there are about 10 to 12 names under consideration. The word from this source was that action would be taken sometime this week. But I was told I should see Dr. Johnson.
Santa Ana's president said the screening committee is currently looking over the papers of applicants. The screening committee consists of Dr. Johnson, athletic director John Ward, Santa Ana city schools physical education director Bill Cook, superintendent Glenn Tabor and director of personnel Howard Harrison.
Dr. Johnson said the committee is already looking into interesting candidates in more detail, but would make no statement as to the identity of the interesting candidates.
Dr. Johnson said the Board of Education would indicate to the screening committee what method it would use in the final selection. "It might want us..."

Santa Ana College players Mike Renfro and Dave Dixon have been signed to bonus contracts by the Los Angeles Angels.
The pair will play with the Angel's San Jose farm team. The San Jose club will train at La Palma Park in Anaheim.
Santa Ana coach Roger Wilson informed the Daily News of the signing of the two Don lettermen. Wilson said the Dons would have to count on the development of young players to replace the pair.
Parks revealed that the Pomona races will feature the first national competition between 1964 FX cars this year.
A total of 3,000 hot rodders and 500 cars ranging from 1,000 horsepower dragsters to tiny European sports cars will participate in 71 classes at this year's Winternationals.
Among the participants are four from Anaheim, Jim Thorp, Gary Dubach, Sam Beardsley and Al Bojorquez.

Dr. Johnson said the Board of Education would indicate to the screening committee what method it would use in the final selection. "It might want us to submit the names of the top 10 candidates, top six or top 15. I don't know," Dr. Johnson explains.
It may be that the Board of Education might even be logical and ask the committee to

Reportedly Moore had expressed interest in two other coaching posts — the University of California at Davis and Los Angeles State. The new Bear coach confirmed that former Don coach Homer Beatty had offered him a job as an assistant at Los Angeles State.
During his one year at the Don helm, Moore had an impressive 3-5-1 ledger. The year before under Beatty, Santa Ana won the Junior Rose Bowl and national JC championship. Now the same redistricting woes that apparently forced Beatty to LA State have brought Moore to Cal.
Santa Ana will not name a coach until after the Feb. 3 deadline for applicants. Top prospect for the post is Santa Ana Valley High School coach and one time SAC mentor Dick Hill.
recommend the man it thinks will do the best job.
After all, I don't think the college submits a list of 10 names when it looks for a physics instructor or a French instructor.
He admitted that the local coach may have the edge in case there are a couple of coaches rated even.
But as Dr. Johnson says, it's almost impossible to speculate as to the possible head coach. "It's wide open right now," the college president emphasizes.
Newspapers have come up with the names of about a dozen potential Don head coaches, but this means there are about 12 names no one has been able to apart — the hands open at the top of the backswing.
Ladies, develop more strength in your forearms. Get a foot-long piece of broom handle. Nail one end of a three-foot piece of strong cord to its center. Tie the other end of the cord to your electric iron. Turn the stick slowly as you roll up the cord. Then unroll slowly as you lower the iron. Wonderful exercise!
With stronger forearms and the stronger grip you'll be able to keep the left thumb in perfect contact with the right palm through the whole swing — especially at the top of the backswing. This is the route to power as well as consistency.

But as Dr. Johnson says, it's almost impossible to speculate as to the possible head coach. "It's wide open right now," the college president emphasizes.
Newspapers have come up with the names of about a dozen potential Don head coaches, but this means there are about 12 names no one has been able to uncover. Like Dr. Johnson pointed out, what if there is a John McKay among those dozen unknowns.
With the redistricting problems the way they are at Santa Ana, it's difficult to analyze the coaching situation. This situation is compounded by the superintendent's office and its mysterious dominating role in the selection of the new head coach.
It could be that the powers in the higher echelons of the Santa Ana school system would like to come up with a head coach they can keep under their thumbs during any squabbles over redistricting.
Myrel Moore made no bones about the fact that he wanted to see Orange, Garden Grove and Tustin in the Santa Ana district. Maybe some officials in the Santa Ana school system would like to limit Santa Ana College to students from the Santa Ana high schools.
Boat Show to Hoists Sails Next Month
Officials of the Southern California Marine Association today announced that space for the Southern California Boat Show scheduled Feb. 14-23, at Pan-Pacific Auditorium, has been sold out.
SCMA president Bill Schock of Santa Ana said: "Our 1964 exposition will be the largest marine showcase ever presented in the West."
Schock declared that for the first time in the show's eight-year history every major boat and motor manufacturer would be represented with complete lines.
Jim Dugan, Newport, the 1964 Boat Show chairman, disclosed that many Eastern boats never before shown here would be exhibited at the Pan this year.
Power cruisers, sail boats, inboard engines and outboard motors will fill Pan-Pacific and an adjoining pavilion, Dugan said.
Interspersed throughout will be the latest in boating accessories from anchors, on the bottom, to radar, on the top.
STAR PLAYER — Albie Pearson, the Los Angeles Angels' star center fielder, will join the five other key players previously announced for the gala dinner in the Magnolia Room of the Disneyland Hotel tonight, when Orange County throws out the welcome mat for the team.
