KEEPING UP WITH JONES
Women's Editor
By ILA JONES
SPRING '64 IS THE SEASON of the big plunge in fashion. They say the daring gowns with the 12-inch plunging necklines and backlines are expected to create some excitement. That should be the understatement of the fashion world and the world in general!
Luis Estevez, the designer, says, "If you have to wear a bra, don't wear this dress." He should add, "Don't do the twist or bend over either." If they aren't careful the hemline and the neckline are going to meet!
SLIM AND TRIM are the watch words for men's trousers and slacks. Spring's pants will be slightly shorter and combine with high rise and boot stylings in shoes. This ought to really finish the "potato-with-toothpicks-for-legs" look! However, after watching some '40 movies on TV, I have decided slightly trim pants do look better — or maybe my mind is your family can do for you, but what you can do for them. Be active and useful, not just decorative. It's amazing the results one gets from a well-planned meal or a little home baking.
SNICKERDOODLES: Many groups contribute cookies to military bases. One, the Snickerdoodle, is particularly popular, especially in Kansas.
The recipe: One cup soft shortening, 1½ cups sugar and 2 eggs mixed together. Sift together and stir in two and three-fourths cups sifted flour, 2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar, one teaspoon soda, ½ teaspoon salt. Chill.
Roll them into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll these in a mixture of two tablespoons of sugar and two teaspoons of cinnamon. Place two inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake until lightly browned, but still soft, in 400 degrees.

WITH OFF AGAIN, ON AGAIN Santa Anita tracks, those in the horsey set might venture to watch some of the many horse shows staged in this area. The young people in these shows are most serious and entertaining in their ability to give a good show and they appreciate an audience to cheer them. Check your corral.
The 10th Annual March of Dimes breakfast and horseshow is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 26th, at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. Breakfast at 7 a.m. and the show will be held in the arena at 9 a.m.
Perc Fuller of Santa Ana and his 250 committee members hope to break all records with "the biggest one yet." Sponsors are the Associated Riding Clubs, Orange County Sheriff's Reserves and the All-American Markets, Inc. This is not only good entertainment but for a worthy cause.

Mother's March Readied To Help Battle Cripplers
"Can you spare one hour to help some other mother's child? This was the appeal made today to the women of Anaheim by Mrs. John Mitchell, Chairman of the Anaheim Elementary School District March of Dimes and Mrs. Charles Moler, Chairman of the Magnolia Elementary School District March of Dimes Mothers' March for 1964.
"We are most grateful to the many ladies who have already volunteered for the night of Jan. 28th. However, we need many more if the Mothers' March is to be successful in raising funds to continue and expand the March of Dimes health program," they said.
A major goal of this program, the Chairmen explained, "is to provide the best possible care for hundred of thousands of children crippled by birth defects and arthritis."
Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Moler pointed out that the March of Dimes has established nearly 70 treatment centers at leading hospitals throughout the nation. The centers, will enable doctors to focus attention on the needs of birth defect children knowing that these resources then become available to far more infants and children than could possibly be supported directly by the March of Dimes.
"Perhaps the most important thing about the 1964 March of Dimes," they said, "is the knowledge on the part of each Mothers' March volunteer that she is giving new hope to parents and a greater chance of a normal life to little children."
For those wishing to help on the night of January 28th in these communities of Anaheim Elementary School District and Magnolia Elementary School District, contact either Mrs. John Mitchell by calling KE 5-4583 or Mrs. Charles Moler by calling 527-7589 and saying, "I want to march for the March of Dimes."
"Fathers can be marching mothers too," said Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Moler.
