Cancer Society Seeking 275 'Lost' Volunteers
American Cancer Society volunteers have "donned their Sherlock Holmes cap" searching for "lost participants in the Society's mammoth study of the possible relation of human living habits to cancer.
Only 275 of the 5,375 Orange Countains who volunteered for the study in 1950 remain unlocated in the fourth - year follow-up now in progress.
The Society's Orange County Branch has issued an appeal for help in locating the "lost" volunteers. A duplicate questionnaire will be mailed to any participant requesting one.
Each joined the six-year study to help provide information about daily habits which when correlated may pave valuable leads into possible origins of cancer.
The confidential information in the epidemiology study is sent to ACS Headquarters in New York City where it is analyzed along with data received from the more than one-million participants nationwide.
The largest study of its kind ever undertaken, the project hopes to correlate how Americans live, their occupations, personal habits, family backgrounds, medical histories and other factors with possible cancer causes. If this can be determined, cures and methods of prevention can be found.

Telephone Project for '61 TO COST $39 MILLION
About $39 million will be spent by Pacific Telephone in 1964 on a construction program designed to keep pace with Orange County's metropolitan growth.
The figure includes expenditures for king-sized additions to telephone cables, lines, microwave facilities, and dial equipment offices throughout the county, stated William E. Quirk, area vice president and general manager.
Highlight of the new program is the scheduled completion of a $5.3 million long distance switching center in Anaheim.
The 70,000 square foot structure will be an addition to the present office at 217 N. Lemon St.
New "toll switching" units will be installed to provide more voice paths. The result will be faster, more direct long distance service for Orange County telephone users.
Quirk reported a record 41 million long distance calls were made in the county during 1963, an increase of 15 per cent over 1962. He predicted a similar increase during 1964.
Pacific Telephone was reported serving 430,000 telephones in the county, an increase of 40,000 during the past year. An increase of approximately the same number was forecast for 1964.
"Due to the rapidly growing needs of Orange County, as well as many other parts of the country, we are constantly exploring new and better ways to improve our service," Quirk said.
"Our long-range goal is to provide more uniform, easy-to-use service throughout the nation."
This tends to keep things in a constant state of change—and progress—that has become a part of our time," he said.
What can the public look forward to this year in Orange County?
An increased equipment end time and spans for our mers, and our proved, localized team." Quirk or The company five light, easy-effective next line They would tie in the follow Fullerton, Brea Anaheim, Buena den Grove; San ange; Newport San Clemente Valley.

"This surprised many of us," he said, "because we found out,
