Off to Sea With The Old Skipper
By AFTON MAC NAUGHTON
Editor's note: This series of unique stories for children are the product of the scribbing of an aged sea captain who adventured all over the world before he died a few years ago, leaving the material to a long-time shipmate and friend.
One fine afternoon when the sea was not rough and not too smooth but just right and a fresh breeze was blowing, Captain Obediah Hoofelstinkel steered his little ship, the SCARED CAT, toward another of the Questionable Islands. He had visited several of these islands and found that every one was different from the others. He wondered what he would find at the next island where he intended to stop.
At the last island he visited the people had parrots for pets and the parrots had a lot to say to each other, to the people on the island and to Captain Hoofelstinkel. But most of what they said was like what a lot of people say — just a lot of clatter that meant nothing.
You know, if a parrot isn't properly taught to talk or isn't near people where he can hear them talk he just squawks and screams. But there is one nice thing about a parrot; he stops clattering to listen to others. He listens closely to people and then repeats what they say.
Anyway, while Captain Hoofelstinkel was sailing along he slept and rested he came awake with his feathers ruffled and screamed a loud, meaningless scream at Captain Hoofelstinkel. Or was it meaningless? It is probable that when a parrot that can't talk wants to get attention or to be friendly he makes a loud noise.
Captain Hoofelstinkel suddenly realized that the parrot might be able to help him if the natives on the next island weren't friendly. He said to himself: "I'll give them a reason to be friendly; I'll teach the parrot to say nice things to them."
So he began talking to the parrot and teaching it to say what he wanted it to say to the natives. He kept saying:
"Captain Hoofelstinkel loves you. Captain Hoofelstinkel has presents for you. Captain Hoofelstinkel will be your best friend."
And what do you know? After several days of saying just those words and nothing else to the parrot the parrot started saying the same thing, over and over—
"Captain Hoofelstinkel loves you. Captain Hoofelstinkel has presents for you. Captain Hoofelstinkel will be your best friend."
By the time he sailed near the island, Captain Hoofelstinkel was tired of hearing the same thing but the parrot just kept saying it over and over and over.
When he anchored his ship

Anyway, while Captain Hoofelstinkel was sailing along he heard a squawk overhead and looked up and saw a parrot flying over his ship. The parrot looked like he was too tied to fly any further, and indeed he was. He couldn't land on the water to rest. He had to land on the SCARED CAT. He landed on top of the ship's cabin and blinked his eyes at the captain.
Captain Hoofelstinkel didn't say much to the parrot, for he knew the bird was tired. He just fed it oatmeal and some cooked rice and some bread and gave it some water. He didn't even remind it that it had been foolish to try to fly so far over water as from one island to another.
Later on, when the parrot had
Meteorology Course Open At Coast
A new evening course in Aviation Meteorology for experienced aircraft pilots who wish to advance their ratings and beginning pilots who simply wish to arrive safely has been established at Orange Coast College.
The course will start Jan. 27 with the opening of the spring Evening College semester.
Aviation Meteorology will include instruction in flight planning from available weather data sources, and the study of frontal weather conditions, icing and cold weather aircraft operation, fog conditions and thunderstorms.
Frank Ritchie, former operator of a Fullerton flight training school, will be the instructor.
Registration for all OCC Evening College classes will start over—

By the time he sailed near the island, Captain Hoofelstinkel was tired of hearing the same thing but the parrot just kept saying it over and over and over.
When he anchored his ship near the island the captain left the parrot on deck so it could talk to the natives and went into his cabin to have dinner and rest. He was so tired that he went to sleep. Then the parrot went to sleep. And THEN some natives came out in a boat in the dark of the night and GRAB-BED the parrot off the SCARED CAT and rowed back to shore. And they were laughing, for they had in mind a big joke they were going to play on the captain.
They disappeared for several days.
Then one night while the captain slept the natives came and put ANOTHER parrot on the ship and rowed quietly away. When he awakened in the morning Captain Hoofelstinkel saw the strange parrot and was puzzled for a time. But not for long. For THAT parrot had been taught by the natives to speak to the captain for them and it kept saying:
"The Natives are friendly! The natives love Captain Hoofelstinkel, Come ashore, Captain, Come ashore!"
And that is just what he did. They all had a happy meeting on the beach and he stayed there a long time.

Church Lists
Communion Rite Topic
The spiritual meaning of sacrament will be emphasized at communion services to be held this Sunday at all Christian Science branch churches.
Responsive Reading will open with a verse from John (6:35): "Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."
Explanatory readings from the Christian Science textbook will include these lines: "Obeying his precious precepts, following his demonstration so far as we are apprehend it,—we drink of his cup, partake of his bread, are baptized with his purity; and at last we shall rest, sit down with him, in a full understanding of the divine Principle which triumphs over death" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 31).
Can Learn Care Secrets
Secrets of successful rose care in Southern California will be given at the eight free rose care demonstrations held annually in the “Pageant of Roses Garden” at Rose Hills Memorial Park.
R. L. McNitt, Jr., president, has announced that this year there will be two complete demonstrations each afternoon at 1:30 and 2:45 on Saturday and Sunday, January 11 and 12, and again on the following Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19.
“Many rose lovers here make the mistake of trying to use eastern methods in pruning and caring for their roses,” McNitt said. “For example, our climate makes radical rose pruning unnecessary and actually keeps the plant from producing its maximum number of blooms.
“The plants in the Pageant of Roses Garden are in bloom for more than 10 months of each year, and there is no reason why home gardeners can’t achieve the same results.
“John VanBarneveld, American Rose Society director for this district and rosarian at Rose Hills, will again use his special mechanical board to show proper rose pruning. He and his staff will share their successful growing secrets and will be happy to answer questions on care of roses and other plants.”
McNitt said ample free parking is available near the garden.
