Sociologist Reports
Danger Signals Precede Marriages Which Fail
How can young people approaching the age of marriage develop the kind of insight required to decide on a lifetime association?
Sociologists Judson T. Landis and Mary G. Landis answer this and countless other crucial questions.
"In most marriages that fail, especially those that fail early, there were danger signals which might have warned the dating couple against trying to form a permanent relationship," says Dr. Landis, who is professor of family sociology and research associate at the Institute of Human Development on the Berkeley campus of the University of California.
But many young people, Dr. Landis points out, just aren't well enough prepared in an understanding of human relationships to know how to interpret danger signals, even though they may sense that something is wrong.
One reason: There's so much folklore and miseducation about the realities of marriage and courtship.
For example, there's the old saying that the course of true love never did run smooth."
"Young people have heard that over and over again," says Dr. Landis. "Yet, if a love affair isn't running smoothly it's one of the most serious danger signals. Constant disagreement in other life situations (in business, for example) is usually recognized by the parties concerned as a sign that a relationship simply isn't workable.
"But when it comes to a love affair, the folklore, the romantic illusion, misleads young people completely. So they tend to ignore the implications of the quarrels and dwell upon the pleasure of making up afterwards.
"They think everything will be perfect after they get married. But their quarreling should tell them that there's something wrong."
Uneven Course
Another danger signal, often unrecognized, is the uneven work out, were more likely break their engagements, they married in spite of doubts, the marriages more likely to end in divorce.
Natural Hesitancy
"Now the evidence does suggest," says Dr. Landis, every minor doubt or hesitation about the future is a dangerousnal.
"A certain measure of fanciety is natural for any thoughtful person making a lifetime cision. But many people — this is particularly true of the agers — seem to be almost pulsive about the idea of ting married." They rush marriage on the grounds they're in love, and there should get married. What often fails to recognize is you can be in love with different people you could possibly live with.
"The more research I do the more I work with you people," says the U.C. audition teacher, "the more convinced I am that they should..."

people completely. So they tend to ignore the implications of the quarrels and dwell upon the pleasure of making up afterwards.
"They think everything will be perfect after they get married. But their quarreling should tell them that there's something wrong."
Uneven Course
Another danger signal, often unrecognized, is the uneven course which some love affairs take. If couples break up and then make up one or more times during their dating — that's a sign of potential trouble. Even if they do not break up, although they consider it, or if one, especially the girl, has doubts about their relationship, something is likely to be wrong.
The best objective evidence that the breaking of an affair and then getting together again is a danger signal comes from the research of Burgess and Wallin, who studied 1,000 engaged couples and then followed them through into marriage.
The study revealed that those couples who had doubts about whether they should marry, and whether their marriages would
