10—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday November 21, 1963 ANAHEIM CALIFORNIA Children’s Stories by T. By AFTON MAC NAUGHTON Editor’s note: This series of unique stories for children are the product of the scribbling of an aged sea captain who adventured all over the world before he died a few years ago, leaving the material to a long-time shipmate and friend. THE UNFRIENDLY NATIVES A funny little old man with a beard who was sailing his little ship alone around the big ocean and stopping at especially interesting places, as you have been told, was Captain Obediah Hoofelstinkel and his little ship was named the SCARED CAT because it traveled real fast when it was being pushed along by the wind in its sail. He first visited the Questionable Islands. They were given that name because very few sailors knew much about them. Some sailors, it was said, were afraid to go to the Questionable Islands because they were afraid of the unknown. Lots of people are afraid of something or afraid to do something because they don’t know everything about what they are going to do. But Captain Hoofelstinkel wasn’t very much afraid. He said it would have to be proved to him that there was danger in the islands before he would become afraid to go there. If he found real danger, he thought, he would sail away like he sailed away from the people who talked all the time and wouldn’t even let him introduce himself. Captain Hoofelstinkel had heard that on the island where he was steering his little ship were dangerous natives, but he thought he had a way of scaring them if they made trouble for him. On day when the weather was nice Captain Hoofelstinkel looked up from his ship and saw an island, all right, and he steered toward it. As he approached the island he took down part of his little ship’s sail and went slowly toward the land until he saw a narrow inlet into a harbor. He steered the ship into the inlet and then he saw camp fire smoke on land near him. He was very careful not to get too close to the land because the water might not be deep enough for his ship and it would run aground and maybe turn over or capsize. When a boat or a ship turns over it is called capsizing. Of course you don’t capsize when your turn over in bed because you are not a boat. You just turn over. Well, Captain Hoofelstinkel looked through his telescope and saw people on land, but he didn’t like their looks. They looked fierce and dangerous so, he decided not to go ashore. He took down his sails and dropped his ship’s anchor in the harbor and started to cook his dinner. And while he was getting ready to eat dinner some fierce looking native near his ship in life the fiercest looking at him to scare him. Captain Hoofelstinke he would not be able to give them it if they were friendly of them threw a ham and it hit the tile ship’s cabin. He knew they were going to scare him a little attention came he locked the cabin and went not without first thing. You may remember put some carpet ship when he sailed voyage. Now you will have those carpets. He put them on the ship, which is the scattered them around went to sleep. Far in the night a live came to do haunt Hoofelstinke a little boat and stay side of the SCARE jumped down on deck. And when he jumped on the sharp taper bare feet. He screamed loud in pain. He jumped back boat but the tacks stickin in his feet yelling in pain. Then into the water and ward the land. And snug and safe inside the cabin, Mr. Merchant YOU'RE BOUND TO SCORE PROFITS when you kick off your sales campaigns with... Cerritos, Anaheim fierce looking natives came out near his ship in little boats and the fiercest looking one growled at him to scare him. Captain Hooverstinkel decided he would not be scared. He would give them time to prove it if they were friendly. But one of them threw a coconut at him and it hit the top of the little ship's cabin. He knew they were just rrying to scare him and so he paid little attention. When night came he locked himself inside the cabin and went to sleep, but not without first doing a funny thing. You may remember that he put some carpet tacks in his ship when he sailed on his first voyage. Now you will learn why he had those carpet tacks. He put them on the deck of his ship, which is the floor, and scattered them around. Then he went to sleep. Far in the night a big bad native came to do harm to Captain Hooverstinkel. He came a little boat and stole over the side of the SCARED CAT and jumped down on deck. And when he jumped he stepped on the sharp tacks with his bare feet. He screamed real loud in pain. He jumped back into his own boat but the tacks were still stickin' in his feet and he was yelling in pain. Then he jumped into the water and swam toward the land. And snug and safe in his bunk inside the cabin, Captain Hoof- elstinkel chuckled and went to sleep. And that bad man who came to do him harm was so scared and in such pain that he went away and never came back. Doctors Set Presentation By Surgeon Dr. Jerome H. As has been true in the past 21 years when the orchestra begins the first strains of “Shine on Harvest Moon,” it is the signal for Orrin and Irma to glide onto the ice. Both Irma and Orrin always come up with one common statement — “skating keeps us young, you know.” Grandpa Orrin, who figures to be around at least several more seasons before settling down at his home in Hesperia, is the father of two children, while Irma has three grown daughters.
