12—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, November 21, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA CHURCH FAMILY — The James Conn family suitably attired as pilgrims — get ready to lead devotions Monday night at the First Baptist Church of Anaheim's Family-Life Harvest Festival and Thanksgiving dinner, which brought a capacity crowd of more than 300 to the church social hall. Here Donna Conn, 8, straightens her father's tie, under the watchful eyes of her mother, 13-year-old brother, Randy, and sister Barbara, 11. Right Wing Conscience Probed By Psychiatrist Members of the right wing, such as the John Birch Society, are comprised of persons who can't adapt themselves to modern life because they use as a standard of authority their own "Exclusive loyalty to any survival group has become acutely dangerous because now the survival group has become the human race itself." Since the old patterns have possessors of consciences which have not matured with experience, except that their immaturity is expressed as rebellion against the set of standards under which they happened to be Members of the right wing, such as the John Birch Society, are comprised of persons who can't adapt themselves to modern life because they use as a standard of authority their own conscience, accidentally acquired while still children, a Canadian psychiatrist reported at a University of California Medical Center symposium. Dr. Brock Chisholm, former director-general of the World Health Organization, said "man's conscience, which at times serves him well, now threatens to speed the human race straight to destruction." He said conscience is nothing more than an expression of the conditioning we received as children — accidentally and entirely dependent on family and culture. It Changes "Whereas man traditionally thinks of conscience as an un-changing absolute, it isn't. In fact, it must be amenable to continual alteration if man is to adjust to rapid change and survive," he said. "The capacity for appropriate change is a prerequisite for survival of any form of life in new circumstances. Every society unable to adjust dies out," Chisholm said. He called "nationalism as one of the most dangerous and anachronistic manifestations of a conscience that has not matured with the times." Ingrained We are in the very uncomfortable position of finding that one of our most strongly ingrained group behaviour patterns supported by our conscience, our myths, our system of heroes and our biased histories can no longer be used effectively and have in fact become suicidal," he declared. "Exclusive loyalty to any survival group has become acutely dangerous because now the survival group has become the human race itself." Since the old patterns have broken down due to technological advances and attendant sociological changes, new patterns must take their place and this requires continual readjustment of conscience, he said. They 'Know' Dr. Chisholm said members or right wing groups "know" what is right or wrong in all situations without having to think. Guided by his conscience, he see everything in absolutes of good or bad and all our problems as being results of the machinations of the "bad" people, who may be almost anything different from himself. This type of individual, Dr. Chisholm said, "is the arch enemy of social, political and religious evolution and growth." Such a naive attitude, he said, is normal in small children, but when physically grown up people retain such attitudes they are clearly incapable of functioning effectively as full members of the human race." Left Wing Dr. Chisholm included the extreme left wing as also being possessors of consciences which have not matured with experience, except that their immaturity is expressed as rebellion against the set of standards under which they happened to be born. The middle ground, he said, is to change when change is appropriate. He cited the tendency of great nations to build "overkill" stockpiles of nuclear weapons as an example of the childhood learned reaction to threat. Domination Such a reaction exemplifies the usual domination of emotion over reason, he said. Another type of threat is the average person's lack of concern over the great amount of starvation in the world. Starvation is not new, he pointed out, but the attitude of the starving millions, who blame the prosperous parts of the world for their plight, is new. But our consciences, based on childhood situations, "do not make us sufficiently uncomfortable able to force us to design and implement a world system of food production and distribution," he said. "We have not yet accepted full responsible membership in the human race." Santiago Unitarian Church Plans Night of Food, Song Friends and members of Santiago Unitarian Universalist Church will meet for "An Evening of Eating and Talking," at 7 p.m. Friday. The event, which will feature structured discussion groups and Chinese dinner, will be held in the church Religious Education facility, corner Chapman and Center Streets, in Orange. E. D. O'Brian, an Anaheim attorney and member of the Board of Trustees of the group, is Master of Ceremonies for the occasion. It is jointly sponsored by the group's social and program committees. SEVEN DWARFS — from the coming Anaheim Park and Recreation Department Children's Theatre production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", rehearses the scrubbing scene at Fremont Jr. High School. Left to right, they are Gretchen Oder, Leland Burck, Pandora Ernst, Gerald Gard, Mark Deimel, Gary Griffith and "Dopey", Dirk Ernst, in the center. A second cast is also rehearsing under Thor Nielson's direction for the Dec. 14-15 presentations. More Defense Build-up By LINDA DUDLEY "Since there are only 2,000 cities in the world with a population of over 100,000, the United States possesses the stockpiled weapons to overkill each city 125 times," reported Dr. Seymore Melman, Columbia University professor. "If the U. S. concentrates its efforts only on the Soviet Union we have adequate weapons on hand to overkill the 124 cities of 100,000 population or more than 1,250 times over," Dr. Melman added. Dr. Melman stressed that the significance of these facts is that no one knows how to destroy a human being more than one time. Therefore, he reasoned, anymore additions to the military are not plausable. St. Michael’s Sets Concert for Organ Looking ahead to the occupancy of its new church buildings next year, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church of Anaheim has planned a fund raising concert for the purchase of a new $20,000 Reuter pipe organ to be installed there. Taking place Sunday at 3:30 p.m., the event will be open to the public, according to James Friis, a member of the organ committee. Facilities of the First Presbyterian Church at 310 W. Broadway, Anaheim, have been made available for this occasion. Headlining the program will be Frank K. Owen, organist and choir-master of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Los Angeles. Founder of the Cathedral Choir, he is now also the head-master there. He will present the first portion of the program. The 60-voice men and boys’ choir from St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Long Beach will be heard in the second half of the program. This well-known group has long been a favorite in motion pictures and is currently appearing on television. Their director and accompanist is Miss Marcia Hannah. Members of St. Michael’s organ committee are: the Reverend John K. Saville, Rector of St. Michael’s; James Friis, Agnes Breadsley, Clifford Beardsley, Helen Geistert, Russell Ireland, Myrl Marsh, and Lee Peterson. Also assisting are Grigg, Harry Houghton, Everett James and Faye Schultz. Tickets will be available at the door or from any member of the organ committee. Donations are $1.50 for adults, 75 cents for students and children who are interested in music will be admitted free. The principally for public high school students, the mission will open to all teenagers non-religious as well as Catholic. Total of 6938 teenagers attended Advent missions through the Archdiocese last year. The mission will be conducted this Chapman College Friday night. The two-day meeting is sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, an outgrowth of the Society of Friends. In his lecture Dr. Melman related that Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara stated that United States forces today could destroy the Soviet Union without any help from the deployed air units, carrier task forces, and Thor or Jupiter intermediate range ballistic missiles. "The military fact behind this judgment is an American military overkill capability that is in excess of almost anyone's conception," Dr. Melman countered. "Never before could one think of military power sufficient to kill people more than once. However," Melman said, "now the abundance of military power is so great that purdence dictates a reduction in the military budget request. According to Melman some politicians have argued against the conversion from a military to a civilian economy because of the economic effects or because they say they don't want to disillusion the people by having them think that disarmament is just around the corner. Melman argued that this point is irrational because it leads to a vicious circle of not being able to consider some disarmament agreements because of the economic effect thereby making the battle of arms more intense. One-third to one-half of the people in the world now hunger every day, Melman said, and could be greatly benefited by spending the excess money spent on military spending on improving public policy. Dr. Melman proposed that the United States cut a total of $22 billion from the defense budget. Melman stated that $1.2 billion could be cut from the structures budget as the defense department has the largest number of structures in the United States; $300 million should be cut from civil defense as "everyone knows this is a bad joke," and that the $7.2 billion for research is "a grand scale exercise in futility" as there is no point to future research when the weapons available are more than adequate. Due to the savings, Dr. Melman suggested a tax cut of more than $15 billion so private industry could convert the defense economy. Melman further added that the money could be spent for education, urban renewal, improved urban transportation, better public health, conservation and major investments in human investments. "Here we could begin the peace race that would give us an exit from the arms race," Melman theorized. students, the mission will open to all teenagers non-holic as well as Catholic. total of 6938 teenagers at Advent missions through the Archdiocese last year. en will be conducted this ing them think that disarmament is just around the corner.
