6—The Anaheim Gazette Thursday, October 31, 1962 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Health Group W One way not to keep healthy is to inhale automobile fumes as a steady breathing d et. Practically everybody has known this all along, but now it has achieved ultimate status as fact verified by research. Investigators from the U. S Public Health Service and the Harvard School of Public Health got together and fired some searching questions at sixty toll collectors employed at a tunnel in Boston. From the answers they were able to determine that twenty-two, or 36.7 per cent, of the men had some form of chronic respiratory disease — damage to the breathing apparatus. The Orange County Tuberculosis and Health Association states that this rate of respiratory illness is more double the rate that exists in the general population, large number of cases, the form of chronic bronchitis. A further fact underlies connection between fumes and breathing ailies that employees who had more than ten years at t FOOTBALL C $2.5000 IN PRIZ First Prize $15 Each Week ● Second Prize CONTEST RULES 1. MICHIGAN Up Warns Against Fume states that this rate of chronic respiratory illness is more than double the rate that exists among the general population. In a large number of cases it took the form of chronic bronchitis. A further fact underlining the connection between gasoline fumes and breathing ailments is that employees who had worked more than ten years at the traf- fic tunnel showed a proportionately higher number of cases of disease than those who had worked a shorter time, according to the investigators. In other words — the more fumes inhaled over the years, the greater the likelihood of illness. Possible results of smoking were not ruled out; but when all pertinent factors were added up, a decisive role in the production of disease was assigned to the effects of automobile exhaust gases. What should one make of it all? First, that "air pollution" is more than just a phrase representing vaguely undesirable practices: it can refer to something that makes people sick (as we here in Southern know) and, in the case tain percentage, inevit them. Second, that air poll-occurs in forms — such mobile exhaust fumes can be remedied through and private measures people will try hard job done. Anaheim Memories Men of this community are heading up a good roads club and have held a first meeting. A number of prominent men from Fullerton, Santa Ana and this city were present. The club organized by electing Pete Weiseil as president, George Dutton vice president and P. N. Krick secretary. Constitution and by-laws were adopted and a committee to solicit new members was appointed as follows: O. M. Skinner, Herman Stern, F. Baum, Kerr, Wm. Starbuck, Editor signed the roll, paying a dollar fee. Among those present and speaking in favor of good roads were C. C. Chapman, W. T. Brown, Dr. Freeman, W. W. Hitchcock, Postmaster Tressler, P. A. Schumacher of Fullerton, Frank Ey and Rev. Wharton of Santa Ana. Father Dubble of St. Boniface church read a scholarly treatise upon the life and work of Father Junipero Serra who passed over through the identical route through this city selected for El Camino Real. The club then adjourned to meet the evening of the last Friday of the month. Theodore A. Bell, democratic nominee for governor, accompanied by a party of eight autos filled with democratic candidates, was in town on Friday afternoon. L. Nemetz has received a building permit for a residence to cast $1600 to be built on lot 6 of the Nemetz tract fronting Olive near Center. Supt. Lawrence of the Los Angeles office was worth $50 in cash, but a lot more in sentiment according to the superintendent. Anaheim residents sorrowed this week when they learned of the death on October 14 of William O. F. Schwenckert, 65, former councilman and well known rancher of this city, at the French Hospital, Los Angeles. The remains were cremated at a Los Angeles mortuary, and the ashes were buried on Mr. Schwenckert’s ranch at Redlands, California.a Death was by cancer of the right eye. Off-timers of Anaheim recall the marriage of Mr. Schwenckert to Miss Louise Wehmeyer before the turn of the century. They lived on a 20-acre ranch at West and Santa Ana Streets, where their son, Henry, was born. The widow and son are the only known survivors. The family home in recent years has been at 1544 Shatto Street, Los Angeles, and previous to that, in Redlands. Mr. Schwenckert was councilman here more than a quarter of a century ago. Humped-backed cats, spooky bats, pumpkin heads with eyes aflame and typical orange and black decorations on 29 festival banners dangled overhead in Anaheim’s business district this week — the van guard of the annual Hallowe’en parade which is expected to attract 40,000 fun seeking spectators Tuesday evening.
