Voting Machines Under Consideration for Areas A switch to mechanized vote-counting in the county is under consideration so that ballots may be processed rapidly, said County Clerk William St. John Monday. In a memorandum to the county voting machine study committee St. John stated that in addition to the problem of handling the 400,000 registered voters expected next year he must also put up with a new state law requiring counties with more than 300,000 residents to extend the poll closing time one hour from 7 to 8 p.m. "The law is designed to accommodate those voters...unable to return from work in time to vote. Unfortunately under a hand-count vote system it has the effect of greatly complicating the problem which al- REESE IN EXERCISES Army Sgt. Marvin W. Reese, son of Mrs. Sadie L. St. John said a mechanical vote-counting prosecure would allow the county to reduce the number of precins from the 2,000 it would take next year to approximaely 1,000 and to reduce the precinct work force from 10,000 to approximately 4,000. Get Contracts Two Orange county firms have been awarded U. S. Government contracts totalling $5,-082,000, Congressman Richard T. Hanna announced. Autonetics Division of North American Aviation, Inc., Anaheim, was awarded a cost plus fixed fee contract in the amount of $2,854,000, while Hughes Aircraft Co., Fullerton, was awarded a $2,228,000 pact. The Autonetics contract, awarded by the Navy Bureau of Ships, was for the modification and research of inertial navigation equipment aboard Polaris submarines. The Hughes contract was for the purchase of 10 250-KW short wave transmitters for use by the United States Information Agency in the Philippines. Give GOP Rejects Short-Doyle The change also would permit savings of up to $120,000 for one election, he added, but pointed out this did not include costs of any mechanical equipment. The cost of the mechanical equipment is now estimated at $1.7 million, should the county adopt the Coleman Vote Tally System. Officials believe two of the Coleman machine could serve the county election needs through 1975. Each machine costs $85,000. Using St. John’s figures, the proposed elections savings would be largely realized from a consolidation of precincts. St. John said the law now allows only 200 voters per hand-count precinct where 600 voters are allowed per precinct where voters are machine tabulated. “Voter convenience is paramount in all our plans. No system should be considered which will place a hardship on the voter. The voting system must remain simple and effective and require a minimum of voter education,” St. John pointed out. GOP Rejects Short-Doyle The Anaheim Republican Assembly has passed three resolutions, including rejection of the Short-Doyle approach to mental health. The ARA also urged the Kennedy Administration to remove the secrecy from government actions in thwarting communist offensive, “if indeed Administration is doing an thwarting.” A resolution was also adopted urging all citizens to observe U.S. Day instead of UN Day by attending the celebration at Anaheim High School Auditorium this Friday at 8 p.m. “LEFT HOOK” Army PFC John R. Engleby Jr., son of Mrs. Eva C. Engelby, 3415 Danbrook Ave., Anaheim, participated in Exercise "Left Hook," a five-day First Armored Division maneuver, conducted at Fort Hood, Tex. During the exercise a mock war was devised which included both offensive and defensive problems, a simulated nuclear attack, river crossings and offensive and defensive guerrilla operations.
